Brian May is a guitar genius. He cultivated a specific tone that was somewhere between a trumpet and a human voice, and used his instrument as an extension of his voice. Brilliant. Freddy had a voice you are lucky to find once every millennium. Such a special man.

He had such power, emotional inflection, and range. He had great control and ruled the stage just with his vocals. I don't think we'll have another singer like him in this century. He's a legend for a reason!

You should check out The Show Must Go On by Queen, Freddie's voice will give you goosebumps, especially when you read about the recording: "When Brian May presented the final demo to Mercury, he had doubts that Mercury would be physically capable of singing the song's highly demanding vocal line, due to the extent of his illness at the time. To May's surprise, when the time came to record the vocals, Mercury consumed a measure of vodka and said "I'll fucking do it, darling!" then proceeded to perform the vocal line."

Queen, were awesome musicians. Brian May is the most under appreciated guitarist. What can you say about Freddy Mercury. First of all he is probably is the most naturally talented vocalist ever. Freddy , and the rest of Queen were also next to the Beetles, the best at harmonizing. Freddy, was also one of the best front men ever, he could hold a crowd in the palm of his hand. Plus hey we’re so innovative, with out being pretentious.

If I could see one person live, singer or musician who has passed, Freddy would top that list hands down. Nobody had a voice like Freddy. On Queen's last album, Freddy barely able to walk was still able to belt out some of the most powerful vocals. Though that "These are the days of our lives" video, with him all powdered up and thin as a stick, was extremely sad, I'm getting emotional just thinking about that. Awesome that you digged this.

Queen transcended race and age boundaries in a way few bands have ever done with extraordinary talent. I got to see them live 3 times and they remain the best band I have ever seen with the first being at the end of the 1970s when I was 17 and the last at their final original-lineup show at Knebworth in England in 1986. The US had fallen out of love with them by then but they were loved in Europe where they performed to over 1 million people on their 'A Kind of Magic' tour with 400,000 in the UK alone. In their last 3 nights in England they sold out Wembley Stadium twice and then 120,000 tickets for their final night at Knebworth. This was before the internet when you applied for tickets in the post. Queen were astonishing and they always left the crowd happy.

Freddie Mercury and Ronnie Dio.... So far above everyone else in rock it's not even funny. Both had beautiful & warm tone and resonance, perfect phrasing, incredible pitch and both made the difficult task of adding emotion and vulnerability to their voices look easy. The fact that they both do this while jumping around and shaking hands with fans without missing a beat is beyond impressive. Lastly, both men had absolute control over their 'instrument' which made everything they did look so incredibly easy. Truly two of the greatest singers of all time period!

LordOfTheNumbers - He's got great range but doesn't really do anything for me. Another quality that I forgot to mention earlier that both Freddie & Ronnie possessed which can't be taught was charisma. I never saw Freddie live so I can't speak to his but I saw Ronnie about a dozen times and was fortunate to be able to meet him twice and this guy had it in spades. When he walked into a crowded room all it took was a smile and a few words and that room was his. Just amazing to watch... couple that with his talent and you have something special. Devon is fun to listen too but he doesn't have that 'it' quality in both voice and presence that Ronnie & Freddie had and it's not even close.

But...he was always true to himself and his music. He was unique. The whole band complimented each others talent and they were especially brilliant at live performances...and usually did huge arenas and football stadiums....and this is where Freddie shone as an artist...he commanded the attention of hundreds of thousands of people in the audience....they were captivated by him. So impressed with your reaction. Queen are in a class of their own. I don’t need to tell you how insane Freddie’s vocal powers were... you have heard, you have seen, you have believed. (Justin Hawkins). But her rest of the band were unmatched, particularly live. Brian May is one of the finest rock guitarists of all time and has influenced so many other great guitarists. Roger Taylor’s drums matched with John Deacons bass were the perfect foil to Freddie and Brian...and Rogers high notes in the back ups!! Just listen to the Opera breakdown in Bohemian Rhapsody to hear how high he gets.

Queen was amazing! Freddie Mercury's voice was incomparable. Never took voice lessons, he knew how to access a multi-octave vocal range. I believe I read that his voice went to a 5th octave C. This is by far my favorite song of his. Besides it being musically brilliant, the lyrics bring it! What you said about the guitar solo is spot on! I never could put into words what it was, and yes, a continuation of Freddie's voice. I guess a lot of people asked him why he didn't get his teeth fixed, like it was any of their f-ing business! He said he didn't know if the shape of his overbite and high palate contributed to his voice, and he didn't want to jeopardize that, as well as, he was comfortable in his own skin. There are 2 different videos of George Michael singing Somebody to Love: the performance at the Tribute to Freddy Mercury, and his practice run earlier that day. I'd never been a fan of the pop music that George Michael sang, but he raised the bar on this performance! If you haven't watched the practice run, which is just as good as the performance, you should. Notice on the side of the stage, David Bowie and Seal are there watching him!

this is probably too long to react but you should watch it. Queens set during Liveaid 1985. I remember seeing a documentary said Freddie wanted the 6 pm spot where other artists wanted later. He picked it cause the crowd would still be fresh and was right after the 5 oclock news so everyone at home would just be tuning in. They destroyed it and none of the later artists were very eager to go onstage afterwards. There will never be another Freddie Mercury. He was an amazing singer, with a massive vocal range, and incredible front man. There will also never be another Queen, not the way the original 4 were together.

Awesome Song. It is strange how different people are raised in different backgrounds. I was raised in upstate NY and grew up listening this stuff. I was positive that you would stop this and say you knew this song. Thank you for the review and keep spreading positive vibes.

Yes, Queen did play as a support band. It was in 1973 where they were support act to a band called Mott The Hoople. Queen trashed them, to be honest. That was the only tour on which they supported anyone. After 1974 they were always the headline act. I was lucky enough to see Queen live about 26 times as I can work out, including the last live performance at Knebworth. Me and my brother latched on to them very quickly as teenagers where they went from being nobodies to being the world's best live band.....and frankly it was no contest. Nobody got even remotely close to performing like them in live situations. The simple proof is to go back and watch their Live Aid performance from 1985. Live Aid was mostly crap until Queen turned up and blew everyone else off the stage. It was like men and boys. It is rather amusing to read what the U2 fans say because they like to pretend that on the day U2 were the best band but that is simply re-writing history. Queen minced everybody. It was like they came from a different planet. In the UK there was an exit poll carried out at Wembley Stadium where people were asked who the best band were. Queen got 92% of the vote.....the other 8% were either deaf or lying. It's that simple. The secret of the band was that it had four excellent song writers, all capable of writing massive global hits. Name another band who could say that? All of them were excellent musicians and were all multi-instrumentalist. The drummer, Roger Taylor could also play guitar and keys as well as being one of the world's best drummers; John Deacon the bass player was also a very good guitarist in his own right and could also play drums and piano. He is the band member that nobody knows the name of but everyone knows his bass riffs....and steals them. Brian May once said that John was the best rhythm guitar player he had ever played with. Brian May is a unique guitarist. What he does isn't hard by modern standards but he did first when nobody else could. And What can you say about Freddie Mercury. The guy was a lunatic but what a genius vocalist, pianist and an excellent hockey player apparently. Whatever they had it just clicked.

There is a big difference between seeing a live concert and a live performance. One has musicians singing a song one of them wrote while playing instruments, the other are people singing to a back track. Nice to see people still experiencing and appreciating their first rock concert.

Hey man great videos! I grew up on metal and hip hop so I love you are stepping out and finding new stuff that you like. I liked on the enter sandman video where you spoke about how your ears aren't used to hearing the words through the tempo and yelling and I completely get that. When I first started listening to metal it sounded like a bunch of screaming but just like learning a new language your brain gets used to it and eventually you can understand every word. Keep up the videos man I am enjoying them all. I will send you some random suggestions. I will throw out a few quick ones: Thrice - Black Honey The Black Keys - Tighten Up Killswitch Engage - Holy Diver

Freddie was and still among the very elite when it comes to talent, showmanship and singing. He commanded the stage and the audience. Very mesmerising and you couldn't take your eyes on him and still just as mesmerizing today. Just about every musician on the planet will all say Freddie is the best. On stage Freddie was commanding and extroverted but off stage very very shy and reserved. Many say he didnt correct his overbite because he feared it would change his voice and the acoustics. He had four extra teeth which caused his signature overbite. He began singing at the age of 4 or 5 according to his mother and took piano lessons at 7. Queen is the only band with all 4 members in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Each of them have written number 1 songs. As well as being inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I'm 55 yr old and I was a queen fan in the 70's - I've seen queen 3x in my life (concert tickets were $10 & $15) and the guitarist got his sound from using a 6 pence coin for his sound - which gave him orchestral guitar sound

"it had to be a pain in the ass to follow them"... after they absolutely slayed during their set at Live Aid in 1985, poor David Bowie had to follow it, and as he's passing Freddie backstage he says something along the lines of "how the hell am I supposed to follow that?" But then goes out and delivers an absolutely killer set himself. I mean, he had to. So yes, following them would be intimidating, but on the other hand, it would also inspire an already great artist like Bowie to pull out his absolute best. You might wanna react to Queen's Live Aid performance at some point, it's only something like 15-20 minutes total, but considered by many to be among the very best live performances ever (there were many artists performing and they ran those spots pretty strictly, you can even see a big clock at the side of the stage, when the camera films that way, so that the various performers didnt run over their allotted times)
