There is nothing wrong with ear pieces. It's just that they didn't have them in 1981 that worked properly so they had wedge monitors. It's so you can hear what is being played, otherwise you can't. What we hear on stage as musicians is not what you hear in the audience

If you watch, you hear Brian signal the band, that’s why Freddie’s head flips around. Roger and John go into the holding pattern and Freddie got up and started engaging with the crowd you can see Brian walk off stage to fix whatever he needed to fix and the when Freddie sees Brian returning, he times it perfectly for Brian to get to the microphone to sing harmony. @@susanwgallagher-wc6jn Actuallllly, I have heard/seen many guitarists say that when Brian broke a string on the Red Special, he would grab another guitar for the duration of the song so his assistant (it wasn't Pete Malandrone at that time. Pete didn't start until Jan. 1994.) would change the string on the RS and it would be ready for the next song. When Sir Bri walks back during this song, he has the RS in his hands and he comes back with it. The guitarists I have heard/seen talking about this said there are any number of tweaks he might have needed to do and it would be hard to guess. BUT, the freakin' fabulous part is how incredible the team/band was together. They were seamless with mistakes/changes/shifts and Roger has often said, even in the Commentary for this specific Concert, that they could almost read each others' minds and connected with each other via eye contact. If you have not seen the Commentary, do take a look. It is a HOOT! Roger is one naughty boy!

It's very possible that Brian broke a string (guitarists break strings all the time) but if you listen carefully enough there's only a few seconds where the guitar is not playing in the background; if there was a guitar switch, they were ready to go at the drop of a hat and switched out literally in a matter of seconds. However, that breakdown was a part of every one of their shows, not an impromptu sing-along.

I've heard in an interview that depending on Freddie's voice, Roger stepped up to get that higher register. That was towards the of end their touring days but they really are a family.

Freddie Mercury had a great voice, so charismatic on stage, not forgetting of course the other members of this great band, Queen. Brian May, (guitar), John Deacon (bass guitar) and Roger Taylor (drummer and backing vocals). Together they made one of the most legendary bands of all time, amazing catalogue of music and Freddie himself left an incredible legacy. This performance in Montreal in 1981 was fantastic and a fabulous song. Love watching YT live videos of Queen, including of course their phenomenal set performance at Live Aid 1985, anyone who saw this will never forget it! 👍😊

Queen had this show recorded with 35mm film with the intention of releasing it as a feature length movie on mobile screens. It’s had a few dvd releases over the years and this January it was remastered in IMAX and was wildly popular.

Pretty much, except it was director Saul Swimmer that convinced Freddie Mercury to film the show. Freddie liked the idea of being on massive theater screens all over but Freddie hated the cameras, he thought they were too distracting. Throughout production the band grew to hate the way Swimmer did things and didn't keep the band informed. As a film director, Swimmer knew the stage had to be brightly lit within a certain color temperature to get the best image captured to film, he did not inform the band that he was changing their lighting. He also demanded the band wear the same clothing for multiple performances so the film could be stitched together from multiple performances. He also demanded that the band moved and danced the same way each night, which really pisses off the band because nothing is choreographed for live shows, which really made performing uncomfortable for the band

Freddie Mercury is the Greatest Font man of All time. "Somebody to Love" is just one of Queen's great songs. It's too many to mention of their great songs and Live performances. Freddie is a great composer and singer. He has a unique charisma that you can't explain. His duo with Roger Taylor (Drummer) is great. You noticed how he moves on stage - wait until you watch DRAGON ATTACK from this same concert. it's 2 minutes of audience play (call back) and then the song begins and Freddie literally slinks across the stage. Watch for it. No MAN walks that way. Kicks his feet out at the need, slight torso twist and manages to appear slink up and down in slight height changes while doing so. I absolutely love it. Love that you also noticed how he sits back down mid song at the piano has flawless pick up - no missed keys. At the end of this song Roger takes over the lead singing giving Freddie time to scat like - he is playing with sound his mouth creates. This is a masterpiece of a live performance. And I think it's show cases the perfect growth of Freddie's style of mustache. lol

THANK YOU, JAIMIE!! …I feel it’s important to add: YESSS, obviously this is a great “letter perfect” performance… Queen also has many other live performances as well that - depending on who you ask - actually rival this or - again, depending on who you ask - even surpass it. Queen prided themselves on being a live band, and are actually the ONLY group who were renowned for being even BETTER live than in-studio. It would just be a shame if someone who is new to Queen, were to stop after seeing this one performance (or this and Live Aid) …thinking that they’ve seen all that Queen has to offer. With over 200 songs in their catalogue and having performed 700 concerts, far from it!

@@samlawrence4670 All I know is that I’ve watched many many many music reactors watch/compare Queen studio tracks with live performances of the same songs, and 99% of them actually said that they preferred the live performances over the studio recordings. (This is primarily due to the fact that Freddie Mercury’s vocals in live performances were always much more dynamic than just in the studio, because he “fed off” the energy of the audience.) I DO also respect and appreciate the groups you mentioned (and others as well, not mentioned here) who I’m sure are equally as good live as in-studio.

Incredible performance by the entire band. Freddie was an amazing musician and all around talent. The reason the quality of this video is so good is because this concert was filmed to be viewed in a format that was larger than IMAX. This was not video film, it was filmed on 8mm film. The audio on this is excellent as well. I recently saw this concert in IMAX and it was incredible, you truly felt like you were right there front and center at the venue. It was so good that I went back and saw it a second time. The movie was only circulated for 2 weeks and was not advertised. I only knew about it because I follow Brian May and Roger Taylor on social media. It wasn't even listed on the cinema page. Sony just bought the entire Queen catalog for a billion dollars so I am guessing that showing the movie is somehow attached to that sale. Roger Taylor is the drummer and he actually has the most amazing falsetto which you will hear in some Queen songs. Brian May is the guitarist and he too has a great voice. Both Brian and Roger are lead vocalists and have been in their solo careers but when you have Freddie Mercury as a lead vocalist and Front Man, you might as well let him carry the load. Great intro! Couple of things I would add. Sir/Doctor Brian May had his own band "The Brian May band" and put out some great music as did Roger. Brian is also is a great singer. I swear that man has played in some capacity with every famous musician. Big or small ways. Queen pretty much had 3 lead singers (John did not sing) As for their musical style you can't put Queen in a box. There is no box they fit into. Also anyone new to Queen (or just doesn't know) Brian and his dad made his guitar (The Red Special) when Brian was about 17 out of parts around their house as Brian could not afford a guitar. Fireplace mantel, knitting needle, his mother's pearl buttons. Except for a small facelift one time it's still the guitar he plays to this day 50 years later!

About the band… Freddie Mercury, lead vocals, piano, guitar sometimes. Had a degree in graphic arts. Designed the band's logo and many of their early costumes. Died of AIDS in 1991. Brian May, lead guitar, backup vocals. Made his guitar with his dad while in his teens. After Freddie died, went back to finish his doctorate in astrophysics. Has worked with NASA. Works for animal rights. Knighted by Charles III. Roger Taylor, drums, backup vocals (the high notes). Has a degree in biology (was headed to dental schoool). John Deacon, bass. Electronic engineer. Built a lot of the equipment the band uses on stage. Doesn't like to sing. All 4 have written #1 songs and all are individually in the songwriting hall of fame. John retired after Freddie died. Brian and Roger are still performing (in their 70s) both solo and as Queen with Adam Lambert out front.

Brian and Roger are the founder members of the band (Smile) that was to become Queen after Freddie and John joined. I'm so glad that Freddie said he was the lead singer and not the leader of the band. It takes all four members to make Queen, and each had a vote on band decisions. I've always thought of Roger as a percussionist, rather than a drummer, and so important to hits like Bohemian Rapsody, and Now I'm Here!

It is scatting,, baby, it is. If you look at other live videos of this song you'll see that they've set aside thoses 12 bars for improv on everybody's part. Other performances are completely different. These four guys were all such accomplished musicians, and had played together for so long, that they could very nearly read each other's minds. If you know what to look for you can find examples of them playing around like this everywhere. Queen as a group is without equal. Freddie, well, Freddie was touched by the gods.

Freddie, along with Roger Taylor on drums and John Deacon on bass just bided time till he got back almost seamlessly. I saw them four times in concert, including this tour. If you wanna get close to the same effect it’s easy. Watch the video of their show at Wembley (not Live Aid) from 1986. With headphones on, volume set to max+ for the whole concert. Remember, given a choice between live or studio version of a song, choose live. Like, Who Wants to Live Forever, or Save Me and of course their set from Live Aid. 🖖🍻

Agree with Jamie. They had this performance playing in imax theaters in January, and I drove my mom four hours to see it. My mom was watching Live Aid on TV getting my baby room ready at 8 1/2 months pregnant, so Queen is very much her favorite band. I actually love this performance even more than Live Aid.

I'm an example of someone the right age to have been a live Queen fan, but I was busy in college, graduate school, etc. I actually thought, back then in the U SA , that they were an all-gay band, and as a young woman in the 1980s, I just had no time or interest in pursuing Queen's music. UNTIL now, after seeing the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. NOW, for the past two years, I've delved deeply into Queen and esp Freddie. I've read ELEVEN biographies of Freddie, and am still watching the thousands of videos from performances, to "Reactions", to interviews, and I cannot get enough. I now know more about Freddie than I do about my own field of study. And I am utterly overcome by him and that VOICE, that gift straight from God. I am totally mesmerized by the voice and watching him sing, watching them all, but esp Freddie. The magical charisma he had, it's like I'm drugged, I cannot get enough . Say what you want about that movie, but had I not seen it, I'd stil NEVER have "found" Queen and Freddie. I am grateful that we HAVE these videos, and I assume and hope there are millions more like me, who have even now been discovering Queen and Freddie. And yes, that Montreal 1981 show was one of the very best; the quality of the video was because it was meant to be a real showcase, official video. I also like the Budapest 1986 show; it too is very clear, as that iron curtain country wanted to show the world what they could do. I LOVE a good and understanding Reaction, and esp a pure strong appreciation for what you are SEEING and HEARING; something that we won't see again in life. Freddie's voice was one in a billion.

The seamlessness of Freddie's movement from piano to mainstream microphone is truly amazing, as are the accompanying musicians, who articulate guitars and drums. It's a group of extremely talented, individuals. Try Bohemian Rhapsody, that's their iconic signature song, just as popular now, as it was in the early 70's.

All four are so totally in the zone, individually and collectively. Giving 100% Regarding he scatting, Freddie never sang the same song the same way twice, (he said that would be boring for the audience) he always improvised to some extent and the band are so in tune they all just go with the flow. Roger's singing whilst playing the drums is outstanding.

The Foo Fighters before Tyler Hawkins passed away, did a cover of this in concert and Taylor Hawkins was the singer. He gave him a break from playing the drums and then Dave Grohl would play while he was singing a great video.

Two other recorded Queen live performances that are - to me - on the same level of perfection as this and Live Aid, are: White Queen - Live at Hammersmith Odeon, 1975, and You Take My Breath Away - Live at Hyde Park, 1976 - although others will of course have their favourites. Both intense tales of love: unrequited or insecure, White Queen features a mind-blowing piano/guitar duet/ instrumental break between Freddie and Brian while YTMBA is just Freddie alone at the piano, quieting a rowdy crowd with his exquisite solo performance in the green twilight. Both utterly magical, not to be missed.

The entire band was amazing, but Freddie Mercury was one of the greatest ever. He was, like so many, a tortured, misunderstood artist. He poured his essence into his music. You could see that he loved the music he was making. RIP Freddie. I hope you finally found peace; and thank you for the music you left us with.

Did you notice at the 7:00 mark Brian had a guitar issue, Freddie kept looking to see if the issue was sorted while to interacted with the audience, then moved on as if nothing had happened when Brian retuned. And loads of credit to Roger for drums and backing vocals.

The original concerts were recorded over two nights in November, 1981. It features Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon performing some of Queen's most iconic songs, including "We Will Rock You," "We Are The Champions," "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Another One Bites the Dust." Tensions were high on and off stage due to such creative differences, and to annoy the director Freddie wore shorts for the encores on the second night (he wore pants on the first night) nor did they even perform the Elvis cover, which meant much of the footage couldn't alternate between both shows. The executives said they had to wear the same clothes the 2nd night. Freddie being Freddie came out in very short shorts, no shoes, no shirt. They filmed the movie that way. Lol lol Freddie didn't drink soda or beer before or during the show. Was afraid he might burp, he drank tea with honey 🍯

Jump down the Queen rabbit hole to 1975 at Hammersmith Odeon and listen to White Queen. The interplay between guitar and piano is otherworldly with bass and drums keeping it grounded. An amazing hidden jam. Haven’t seen a reactor yet that hasn’t gone crazy over this song.

And there you have it. Forget the Beatles, U2, Oasis etc etc. These four were masters of their art. Without doubt the finest live performance you will ever witness. Lucky enough to see them live twice and will be forever grateful.

This song was written as a tribute to Aretha Franklin, Freddie's favorite singer. It was gospel performance inspired. Crazy Little Thing Called Love was written by Freddie as an Elvis tribute. He was a such a fan other styles and artists.

My friend's uncle was at that show in Montreal at the Forum.. he introduced us to Queen in the late 80s early 90s. That particular performance.. he wouldn't shut up about it! 😂😂 (With reason!!)
