I just read Brian saying that the original version was similar to a Who song. But that Bowie hated that, and he changed it into something different. Brian didn't like that, but preferred to let Bowie do as he pleased.

It sounds like Freddie does some snippet of the song "Take Another Piece Of My Heart" in the last two verses. He start working at the lyrics during early Hot Space sessions in 1981, and this song later become "Let Me Live"
