Queen Victoria had a large brood of 9 children. She had incredibly high expectations for her four sons and held them up in comparison with her saintly husband, Prince Albert. Their eldest son was destined to inherit the throne of the British Empire at the height of it’s power though he had to wait a long time to obtain it from his aging mother. While waiting in the wings her three younger sons all lived active lives. Two joined the military and traveled the world while the youngest was held back by the “royal disease”, hemophilia. Here are the stories of Queen Victoria’s four intriguing sons:
Edward VII, King of the UK and Commonwealth (1841-1910)
Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1844-1900)
Aurthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (1850-1942)
Leopold, Duke of Albany (1853-1884)

@@karenryder6317 yes, Princess Alice of Athlone was a carrier, since daughters of haemophiliacs typically are. She passed it to her son Rupert who died of the disease in a car accident. Some of Victoria’s children apart from Leopold had the gene. Victoria/Vicky: She did not have the gene because none of her sons or grandsons suffered from the illness. Albert/Edward: He did not have the gene and did not suffer from the illness. Alice: She had the gene and passed to her son Frittie (Friedrich) who died from a haemorrhage at 3 years Alfred: Did not have the gene and did not suffer from the illness Helena: She did not have the gene as far as we know, because her sons did not suffer and her daughters had no children. Louise: It is unknown if she had the gene because she did not have children (although she has been linked to an illegitimate child) Arthur: did not have haemophilia and did not suffer from symptoms Leopold: Had haemophilia, and died of the illness, his grandson died of the illness as well. Beatrice: had haemophilia and passed it to her children. Her son probably died of the illness after bleeding in an operation and her grandson died or the illness as well

Alfred is my favourite of the four. He was born a British prince, was the first member of the British royal family to visit the distant colonies, survived an assassination attempt in Australia, married into the Russian imperial family and ended up a German sovereign duke. There are two mistakes on the slide of Alfred's family. Young Alfred was the Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, not the Duke, as he died before his father. Also the picture labelled as Beatrice is actually her cousin Maud of Wales, wearing her crown as Queen consort of Norway.

The Alfred in the second paragraph is his son (young) Alfred, born Prince Alfred of Edinburgh (his father's title at the time) and who was, at the time of his death, heir to his father's dukedom of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha. Alfred junior was never Governor-General of Canada, that was Alfred senior's brother Arthur, Duke of Connaught.

I am thinking of the son of Leopoldo, Victoria’s youngest son and the only one who had hemophilia. He and his wife had a daughter and she was pregnant when Leopold died young. His son was born posthumously and inherited his father’s title, Duke of Albany. His name was Charles Edward. When the German title fell vacant Victoria (so looney) forced him to claim it. He was quite young and did so, giving up all lands and titles he was heir to in England. There is a biography of him here on KZbin. He suffered a lot from WWI and WWII. During WWII he joined the Nazi party, partially to try and protect his property. There is a biography about him here on KZbin. He had neither a happy, nor a good life, due to the action forced upon him by his grandmother.

I'm a history buff myself. I got a passion for history! And I'm a fan of the royal family! My favorite royals are Prince Harry 🤴 and Meghan Markle! Although I loved the queen too! After all, many of those descendants were still living in Germany when Hitler came to power.

Edward VII is probably my favorite king ever, either him or George VI. He was dedicated himself to ending the many prejudices of his time, He maintained relationships with his entire family knowing that it was the most important thing. He was kind to everyone he met. He absolutely adored his children and loved nothing more than spending time with them. He learned to love his wife even though he thought their marriage would be horrible. He truly was an amazing person.

3:10 WOW. You really got it wrong. Alexandra was NOT deaf. She spoke normally. Over the years she began to lose her hearing. She never lost the ability to speak. Victoria would NOT have married her son to a deaf girl who couldn’t speak. Sheeeeesh.

Despite not being fully deaf, she was eventually ostracized from social engagements due to her hereditary otosclerosis. She was however an extremely popular royal figure, and one of the first royals to adopt photography as a hobby. That last picture of Edward VII in front of a house was actually shot by her. Clearly her skill was passed down to her descendants including the Queen, who maintains a large amount of home videos shot by herself and her husband. Her granddaughter-in-law the Duchess of Cambridge is also an avid photographer in her own right, and a number of publicity photos released by the couple were taken by her.

Imagine attempting to have sexual relations with a virtual stranger who you didn't even pick in the first place (I imagine most of them weren't attracted to or might even detested their spouse); that'll most likely kill any sex drive. Hence, how affairs were prevalent. Also, due to societal norms being in favor of the patriarchy back then, it was ig, more acceptable(?) for males to have mistresses. Females on the other hand, may have no doubt had extramarital affairs as well, but were more secretive and cautious going about it, due to fear of social death.

Very interesting - as a Brit, I am well aware of Edward VII, but nobody talks about Queen Victoria's other sons. Just a couple of criticisms/corrections: "Warwick" is pronounced "Worrick" and "Ulster" isn't "Oolster", but "Ulster" as in "hug". And when the narrator talks about the future Edward VII's mistresses (one of whom was an actress, she tells us), a photograph is shown that can only be of Edward with Alexandra in the early days of their marriage. I don't know why I've been getting into monarchies lately even though I've always thought that most of them are outdated since societies have grown increasingly more aware of what is just, equitable, reasonable with insight and respect of the rights that each and all individuals deserve but I find they are an excellent source to have some perspective of history. The charts you show as you present each child are wonderful. They have very concise information and it must have taken you a lot of work to get it together. This one seems to be problem for all Americans, there are many YT videos about Warwick Castle, try the one posted by George Pollen, to hear it said. Keppel - both the Es are soft Boar War - Boar (as in wild boar or boring) Saxe - Sax (this may not be the correct German pronunciations but it is how it is pronounced in the UK) Ulster - Ul (as in lull) ster Liddell - it’s a family name so who knows, but most Brits would normally say ‘Lidul’ as in Eric Liddell of Chariots of Fire fame

For me there is something very sad about the royal family and royal history of England yet its so immersive and feels like you can get transported back into historic times with this information. We have all Arthur's journals and he sketched boats and his friends in them all the time, and frequently mentions "Alf" or "Alfie". Funnily enough we have reason to believe that Arthur might be the illegitimate son of Baronet Charles Lamb, who married his sister, Anne Grey. My dad and I don't have the means to prove this beyond circumstantial info, but if you're interested I can send you the picture of Anne that was commissioned on her presentation at court to the Queen and the portrait Charles had done not much later; currently they are with our wealthy cousins in Sweden, who live in the middle of Stockholm haha. I mention the portraits because The Baronet had a very distinct appearance and reputation and it would explain certain er, "things" in my family 😅

Probably a spontaneous mutation at Victoria’s conception. It could not have come from Albert, as he was not a hemophiliac himself, and since it’s an X-chromosome linked disorder, in order for their son Leopold to have it, he would have to get it from his mother since Albert would’ve given the Y. It didn’t come from Victoria’s father either, as he didn’t suffer from hemophilia. Victoria’s mother could’ve been a carrier, but there was no known family history in the Saalfeld line. The most likely case is that it was either a spontaneous mutation, which happens in about a third of hemophilia cases,l.

amal zuhair she was definitely a dark soul, and I’m sure your joking, but it’s also super interesting to know that in the late 1800s the tradition was that if any person in your family died, you would wear black for a whole year. So if your aunt died in February and your cousin died in April, you would wear all black until next April. People were always dying so you really only wore black lol.

@@jasminalena1481 There were different degrees of mourning depending on how closely you are related to them, there were a lot of advice books which codified and popularised these rules so if you're interested in the minutia of the difference between parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, children, cousins etc. Victorian mourning rules are easy to google. Also there was plenty of black clothing that wasn't mourning (clothes for mourning had to be matte and trimmed with black crepe so any shiny fabrics like satin would definitely not be OK for mourning even if they were black) Old photographs can also lead people astray as period 'wet plate' photography processed colour differently to modern black and white film so blue tended to show up very pale and yellow looks almost black.

@Lindsay Holiday I don’t mean to nitpick, just wanted to point out a small technical error in the family trees for Edward and Alfred. You use the same portrait for Edward’s daughter Maud, Queen of Norway as you use for Alfred’s daughter Beatrice, Infanta of Spain. Otherwise, this was an excellent video, I really enjoyed it! I love your videos, but just one thing -- please look up pronunciations before doing the voice-overs. For example: it's "SAX" Coberg, and Alice "KEH - puhl", and Alice Liddell rhymes with fiddle.

I really enjoy your videos, even though I know much of this information already I can't resist watching and supporting videos that promote education of history. That said, i hate being that person who nit picks but i was disappointed by how MANY names and words were poorly pronounced, especially as its obvious how much effort you have put into these videos. I surprised to hear Ulster pronounced as 'EWE-LISTER'.
