Who Wants to Live Forever” was composed by Brian May and sung on the album version as a duet between himself and Freddie on the studio version of the song. Freddie sang it as a solo in live concerts. On the studio version, Brian plays synths parts and the song was recorded using an a string orchestra that was arranged and conducted by Michael Kamen. John Deacon did not participate on the original recording (but the video features him playing a white double bass), and Roger Taylor played some drum-machine parts and contributed backing vocals. The percussion was taken over by the orchestra as well as bass (double bass in this case). It serves as somewhat of a “love theme” of the movie, "Highlander," as it adds to the sub-plot of the movie (in the film, Freddie sings the first verse as well, unlike the album version, which has May singing first). Brian said in 1986, "The hero of [Highlander] discovers in his first battle that he can’t die, and unfortunately he finds that he falls in love with this girl, and everybody tells him that it’s a bad idea if they stay together because eventually she must grow old and die, and he won’t. But nevertheless he does, he stays with her and she does grow old and she dies in his arms and she says, ‘I never understood why you stayed with me,’ and he says, ‘I see you just the same as I saw you when I first met you’, and she’s old and she’s dying. I was very moved by that and I wrote this song called ‘Who Wants To Live Forever (When Love Must Die)’."

And THIS was Freddie when his voice was “tired”! (This was actually the second of two consecutive 1986 Wembley concerts: Friday, July 11 & Saturday, July 12… This performance is from Saturday; his vocals are even STRONGER/MORE INTENSE on Friday, July 11, when his voice was fresh.)

@@bbbfst you couldn't be more wrong. Saturday his voice cracks and misses the ability to hold the long notes. There was MUCH MORE PASSION and a most excellent sampling of his vibrato (probably the BEST example actually) kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4DLpn5tlr-Ur9k Of the linked video these time stops are key points for comparison and enjoyment. 1:08 - 1:11 on Fri smooth - this same spot in the song (or right before) Saturday Freddie's voice cracks 1:56 - 1:59 Freddie can't open his mouth any wider than it is here and he's giving 1,000% all of himself. 2:06 starts his spectacular vibrato - I cannot think of another example that could beat this one. 2:17 I love the change to a gutzy sounding "when love must die" (powerful emotion) 2:51 - 3:01 or 3:07 during this section he's able to hold forceful unfaultering long notes in waves of lyrics never leaving the scale. If he was tired, that is even more incredible. And he held the force all the way to 3:44 the rest was a softer outro. Saturday night was the performance that Freddie told the band he was done touring - the exhaustion won out.

This song was written by Brian May (guitar) for the Queen soundtrack for the movie Highlander. Freddie puts so much passion in this song, I love this song and this performance. Thank you for your reaction.

Just one of several Queen songs to appear in the film Highlander, A rough edit of the film was shown to the band which resulted in the members writing songs for it, Bryan May wrote "Who Wants to Live Forever," and "Gimme the Prize (Kurgan's Theme)," Roger Taylor wrote "A Kind of Magic" and "Don't Lose Your Head", Freddie wrote "Princes of the Universe" and John Decon wrote "One Year of Love" Decon would also write "Pain Is So Close to Pleasure" and "Friends Will Be Friends" with Mercury.

Fun facts - Somebody To Love was written by Freddie inspired by his love for Aretha Franklin. And, MJ was a fan of Queen but a bigger fan of Freddie! They did three demos together .. please check out THERE MUST BE MORE TO LIFE THAN THIS (The Golden Duet) Oh & Freddie was very fond of Prince. Used to make his friends watch Purple Rain when they were chillin’ at home!
