This was John Deacon's second composition to appear on a Queen record. We don't know how finished it was when he submitted it, but going by several interviews, band members described a process where they would all give opinions/suggestions. At the end, what was actually released would be what the originator accepted. The fact that John played two instruments showed that he had become confident as both a composer and a musician. Nice reaction, Justin.

He was asked how does he approach the band with a new song He said well I take it to Freddie he's singing it! Roger and Brian didn't like Johns songs so I don't think they'd have much input Both have said Freddie helped John and fought for his songs more than John did!

Roger hated singing "I'm happy at home". He didn't think it was very Rock, but I love it! You are right, a beautiful tribute to his wife. John said that Freddie was his voice.

Haha Roger hated the line "I'm happy at home ' 😅 ... He argued: "We are not some f**ing women's knitting club 😮 we are a rock band!!!" 🙃 Typical Roger 😂😂 .... but Freddie backed John up so Roger had to play and sing it anyway ... 😅

This song has the most radio plays from their catalogue. John is probably the most reluctant rock star you'll ever come across. The sort of guy who's 'happier at home' with his family. What I like most about John's technique; is he'll often play Bass like a lead instrument. If you can find Bicycle Race with bass separated, it'll blow your socks off what he's doing buried way down in the mix. Queen would not have been the same without John, or in fact any of them.

‘ how he presented it to the band’… IKR. I’ve always wondered that 🤔 He and Freddie were really close friends… maybe Deaky had Freddie present the lyrics to the guys ?? Great song 💛 Thanks for your reaction ✌🏼

Killer bass lines and performance almost impossible to replicate. I believe Brian once said that Deacon was rhytmically most gifted of them all, which, listening to stuff like this, completely make sense.

John Deacon used to play the keyboards for this song in concerts.

Couldn’t agree more, Excellent, quality tune. Outstanding production. I used to play Bass at school, so always listening to it, even though I’m playing 6 strings these days , i guess it never leaves you. Although not a prolific writer Deacon has written some great tunes, often overlooked, understandable given the company he keeps. Nice job.👍

Thanks for the reaction. John didn't write a lot, but I really like his style. More of a finger on becoming a pop hit. Well done, John.

I think the sound you're referring to at the end of the song is May's guitar through the 'Deacy Amp' - an amp John Deacon (an electronics whiz) threw together for Brian. Brian has kept it ever since and it was used on many of the 70s songs. The whole 'no synthisisers' boast they made on the covers of their first few albums was to demonstrate that they could produce all the sounds they needed through Brian's guitar and that little amp (like all the weird sounds you'll soon hear in 'Seaside Rendezvous' and 'Good Company').

In my top 10 Queen tracks... you would think it's overplayed but it just sounds so good... some beautiful little minor 7th chords here and there and the bassline movement is gorgeous. But add Freddie's vocals on top and it really becomes a timeless jewel of a track.

The Wurlitzer was sort of co-opted in the 70's by Supertramp on songs like "Goodbye Stranger". But this is obviously years earlier, and SO McCartney-esque. I can imagine when presented to the band Brian May going "Oh, yeah!" Best use of this song is the end of 'Shaun of the Dead'.

There has never been a leak of John singing. However in some live performances you can hear him doing backing vocals.

Once, back when the LP was still fairly new, my dad walked by as this was playing and said - with palpable snark - "Ooh...The Partridge Family". I still like it, but could never unhear the resemblance afterward.

Freddie worked very hard to make sure John was happy with how it sounded. It was very difficult for John to express what he wanted, not being a singer. I imagine John would have been a very good singer if he had had some lessons. He certainly could learn to play any other instrument his song might require. I expect it had more to do with his being a shy person. I just recently got the gift of your channel from the KZbin Gods and am franticly trying to catch up. Thanks, Justin. New subscriber! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The electric piano and Freddie's vocals make this tune great. Freddie played grand piano live and it didn't sound like the same song unfortunately. Bass, guitar and drums are perfection. This is a great example of Queen compromising to make a song great. Roger thought the lyric was too pop and Freddie wouldn't play the electric piano but John stuck by his guns and learned the piano himself and they got a great song. The video for this song is one of their best.

He took it home as Freddie didn't like it Taught himself how yo play and in the process composed the song He didnt have the song and wanted electric piano and had to learn because Freddie refused But John chose to play on the track because he thought it should stay as he composed it rather than grand piano Sorry if I misunderstood your comment

Hey J., It's supposed to be a Wurlitzer electric....A fine example of the added dimension provided by lyrics. Musically, the song is cool., but the sentiment feels heart-felt and not sticky sweet like certain songs by bands that rhyme with anchovy. Lol...all in good fun!

Roger did not like this song because he didn't think it was rock n roll and didn't feel it should be on the album. The "I'm happy at home" was the part that Roger strongly objected to. Here in the US, this song was very popular. I have heard either Brian or Roger talk about how John Deacon tried to school Freddie on how one of his songs 'should" be sung. I don't think that went over very well, but as a rule, John was open to the other band members working with him on his songs.
