@@morgantaylor7807 I can't explain this either; This isn't even my favourite Queen song....but when I hear this track this is the one where Freddy stands out for me, his delivery, energy and showmanship in his voice are central to the Queen ethos. I can't imagine anyone else singing it this way. I realise there are many Queen tracks but this one is the embodiment of Freddy, for me.

one of Queen's best songs!!! I just love it! I also lived through the last years of the Cold War: and I know too well what living under the mushroom cloud means..... I was also born a few days after the U.S.-Cuban missile crisis: born Nov 5th, 1962..... when Kennedy faced Krushchev (sorry for the spelling). In October, during the crisis, my military dad couldn't leave the base and my mom was heavily pregnant....

Born in '65 I can relate exactly. The nuclear brinkmanship was a bit before our time, and we weren't the generation that had drills in school hiding under wooden desks. By our time it was generally accepted that if the missiles launch we are all doomed in the next 20 minutes. Thats it. Game over. "Just got time to say your prayers" I do remember a simplified drill we did a few times. Just got up and went to a windowless cinder block room that had the ''fallout shelter" sign on it. Waited a bit, and went back to class. No duck and cover instructions, no hiding under anything, etc. Even as little kids we knew it was pointless, and would joke about it. The teachers knew it too. Just meeting an outdated requirement. (Fire and tornado drills they took serious.) Nuclear attack was just the end of us, and squat anyone could do about it once it starts. They quit bothering even with this paired down drill by third or forth grade. An instant end of the world was just an ever present thing in the background all the time. A man made one at that. "Growing up in the shadow of the mushroom cloud" Two great enemies, USA and USSR, just sat squared off against each other. A state of high tension that went on for decades. Both ready to push the button in an instant. I was out of college when the cold war thawed, and the iron curtain fell. A gradual thing over a few years, but '89 felt like real moment when the world exhaled after holding its breath for 40 years. A joy it was watching the world change. Until then we had just been "Waiting for the hammer to fall".

Freddie did have an obsession with death and things of that sort, there are interviews that he admits it. I think there's a kind of romantic fixation us Virgos have with Death and a sort of theatrical appreciation of it. We love the drama of it I suppose. ((Freddie was a Virgo and so am I. I've always been fascinated with death and even sometimes write little poems about it, I think we're just nostalgic drama Queens tbh lol))
