Holy shit, you were not exaggerating. The song is from Queens of the Stone Age album, which is the debut studio album of the band, released by Loosegroove Records on September 22, 1998, primarily written and recorded in April 1998 by founding member Josh Homme and his former Kyuss bandmate Alfredo Hernández.

If it gets you down, well, then I'll take it If it gets you up, well, I don't want it It let you down so broken-hearted If it gets you down, well, then I want it If only, only If only, only If only, only If only, only We're nothing at all So blow our mind and make it lazy Those long, long days with no escaping I hold the wheel to let it go Don't want to stop, don't want to know If it gets you down, well, just don't blame me If only, only If only, only If only, only If only, only If only, only If only, only If only, only If only, only We're nothing at all

It's not so much that but the way it starts with just the guitar, and then the drums hit, and THEN the bass. There's something about the way it's done in this song that is just un-fucking-beatable. And then they go and book-end it by fading them out in the reverse... *chef's kiss*

The first time I heard this song I found it on KZbin and couldn’t find anywhere to buy or download it online so I downloaded a KZbin audio stripper to get an mp3 for myself. I found it on an old mixtape of mine the other day. So it’s awesome to see If Only included on a rerelease all these years later!

I remember hearing this on the radio for the first time. In an era where nu-metal and Ozzfest bands dominated the airwaves this sounded intimately familiar and brand new at the same time. I was all in all the way through Songs for The Deaf- their crowning achievement. Just a 3 headed monster of a band with Oliveri, Lanegan and Homme sharing vocals. They've never been the same since Oliveri left. They've grown and progressed but not really to my tastes anymore but this era will always have a place in my listening rotation.

I remember this getting a lot of airplay in Washington in 1998 and the buzz around the band was feverish. I saw them play at a festival in Seattle when this song was in rotation and it was the biggest moshpit I have ever seen. The band opened with this song and that really sent a message that they were not going to savor the "hit". It was more like let's get this out of the way. Very punk mentality.

I'm not into nostalgia, I first know Qotsa when No One Knows came out. But I think the best Qotsa album is the debut album. Great riffs, beautiful melodies, no bad song, never bored to listen. Alot of things can be improved from here, alot of things can be added, but Qotsa improving to different direction from what I expected, they're into Elvis now rather than advanced version of Nirvana.
