Day 6 in Tassie - Queenstown To Hobart
Day 6 in Tasmania was the final official day of the AuStrom Suzuki V-Strom meetup. It was time to leave the West Coast of Tasmania (for now) and part ways with the guys from the meetup as well as my travelling companions for this whole trip so far. But not before exploring the crazy and bizarre post mining landscape of the famous Queenstown.
Leaving Queenstown we hit the famous twisting Lyell Highway that is known as 99 Bends but is waaay more than that over to Derwent Bridge where we visited Lake St. Claire and The Wall before parting ways. thewalltasmani...
My solo trip then began as I followed the Derwent River into Hobart and over to Richmond to see the oldest bridge in Australia.
In late February 2020 (only a week or so before Covid border closures and travel restrictions) we set off on Suzuki V-Stroms for a 3 week motorbike trip from South East Queensland to Tasmania and back. The reason for the trip was to meet fellow V-Strom owners from all over Australia in the Apple Isle and have some adventures. Lots of adventures! I rode 8000km on this 3 week trip, roughly 5000 getting to Tassie and back and 3000 on the island over 13 days there. Grinning with joy the whole time!

I agree about riding solo and just not having a plan. I rode with a mate yesterday from Port Macquarie to Gloucester, following Thunderbolts Way to Wacha and then back on the Oxley Hwy to Wauchope yesterday and realized 'll have to do it myself earlier in the morning with a camera in hand. Thanks for video upload.

That is an awesome loop ride. I usually ride one of those roads on a trip south. We did both the Oxley and Thunderbolts Way on our way down to Tassie on this trip.

What a great range of beautiful things. I have a fondness for Queenstown and it's surrounds, and I love the gravel football oval! Never ridden up Mt Wellington, that looks hairy - I've taken a bus halfway up and hiked the trails the rest of the way - excellent way to experience it. The views at the end of your video, wow!

It was yet another spectacular day of travel through Tassie. Every day held something unique and awesome. Queenstown is an odd place, I definitely wanted to spend more time there checking out the history side of it. Next time! I'm trying to show just how bad the wind was up Mount Wellington in the next edit, but I'm sure it won't come across just how hairy it was riding in it. I wish I'd ridden up for sunrise instead the next morning, but I'm still glad I got up there as the views are incredible! I'd like to do some hiking up there for sure!

It is great riding with others, especially when they are good mates... but it is very freeing travelling solo too, so I can massively relate to you enjoying your own pace solo. 200 years old that bridge this year! 🙂

Yeah, I like both touring with others and solo touring. They both have their pros and cons. I was looking forward to some earlier nights and less hangovers! 🤣 Yes! 200 it will be! I'm sure they'll have some sort of a party for it! There aren't too many structures over 200 years old in Australia, but Tasmania has its fair share of them.

It is a brilliant ride hey! I'd love to do it again in the dry and warm! I'd definitely go back to The Wall as it is ever evolving and would be good to see what else he's added. Yeah I know! I expect that from you now! 🤣 That was our last ride together. Will there ever be another one? 🤔

That is quite weird that a landscape scarred by mining would be such an attraction... and that they're worried about re-greening it! Another awesome instalment, oh look there's Big Kev doing the usual to the rear camera... gonna miss that :( It did look cold for some of that, I remember your insta posts at the time about finding refuge in Hobart. That bridge... awesome, might not have been high level craftsmen, but it's lasted a few hundred years :)

People do like to look at the odd things in life don't they. I think generally people would be pretty pleased that nature is fighting back, but I did read something about locals being concerned slightly that it would lose its uniqueness. I think that will be many years away though if ever. You know Kev, can't help himself. I'll miss that too. Not the first or last time I was bloody freezing on that trip. Summer in Tassie is not so tropical! Very true! The convicts would be proud maybe!

Loved this part of the trip. The mine was a cool stop. The bridge looked perfect to me🤪. It struck me while watching. Is there a food associated with Tasmania? In Maine its lobster, New Mexico has its own brand of Mexican food and Texas is barbecue.

Glad you've enjoyed it mate, it is a beautiful part of the world. I don't think Tasmania is famous for anything specific, but I guess if anything, maybe cheese and seafood. And beer. There are some well known Tasmanian breweries that are really old (in Australian terms anyway). Oh and apples. It is known as the Apple Isle!

Latex gloves under your gloves! Either you have bad heated grip or none at all...but then again tassie is freezing to me . I did the walk from lake st clair to the cradle mtn when i was about 18 , it took 4 days and the nights were freezing...Cheers 4 sharing sir.

I didn't have heated grips then but I do now! The rubber gloves work well though, definitely make a difference! That is an epic walk that I'd love to do. I saw both ends of it on this trip but would love to see what's in between. I just did an overnight hike in the Gold Coast Hinterland last weekend.

Great video! Tassie is a great place! I have done it twice in my old Troopcarrier but as yet not on a bike. West Coast down to Strahan is fantastic.. I have not long ago picked up an 07 Vstrom, Doing a bit of backroads on it but finding the Shinko 705s lacking a bit on the dirt, (maybe i need to drop the pressure) great onroad. Unsure what to try next, any suggestions, cheers Gaz

Hey mate, I'm a great supporter of the Shinkos - but only because I have a 17" front and there's bugger all better available for that. I'd look at Mitas E07s if you can find them, cheers.

It certainly is a great place to visit and definitely awesome on a V-Strom! My preferred tyre is the Mitas E07 and those are what I was using in this video, but I've had trouble getting them since Covid. They're great on all surfaces for me, even mud! I have the Motoz Tractionator GPS at the moment but finding I don't have as much confidence on dirt as I used to have.

I was mainly interested at the time in just enjoying the ride and not really thinking about the video side of things. It was a constant battle with the lens fogging up in the cold and rain, there wasn't a lot I could do about it other than just put the camera away.
