Today, I’m reacting to Heartstopper (2022) starring Joe Locke, Kit Connor, Yasmin Finney, William Gao, and Sebastian Croft. Teens Charlie and Nick discover their unlikely friendship might be something more as they navigate school and young love. Is this show now my new obsession? Got the first three volumes and I'm reading volume 1 and oh my god, it is just as cute as the show is! I am loving this series.

Alice Oseman is also the showrunner, which is a major reason the series is so loyal to the spirit of the books, without being overly precious about it.

I love that! More shows/films really need to make space for the original creator to help navigate the production to stay faithful to the source material.

Fun fact about Ben, the actor who plays him is the biggest Ben Hater, and says sometimes even he wants to punch him! Also, half the cast said that if they could, they would date the actor, including Joe (Charlie) and Kit (Nick)! Also, in the scene on the train as they are going to the beach, The woman sitting across from them is Alice Osman!

I came out in 1984, at the start of the AIDS crisis, when I was 17 and living in a small Australian country town. I wish Heartstopper had existed then. But I’m so glad that kids today have this sort of representation. Watching it now as an adult has been healing, cathartic, and also sometimes painful because it reminds me of all the opportunities I missed out on as a teenager at the time. I’ve also really enjoyed reliving the series by watching your reactions, so thank you.

Thank you for watching! And thank you for sharing your story. I feel the same, that I wish I could have had a show like this as a teenager because it feels like I missed out on so much by being scared, but like you, knowing that queer youth and that my family members who are queer youth (out and proud) have access to a show like this now - makes me feel a bit better about not having it as a teenager. I've been rewatching the first season since finishing this reaction because you're absolutely right that watching this show is healing and cathartic, even if it makes me imagine a life that could have been.

You're welcome to my channel anytime. Getting the perspective of so many people with different backgrounds (whether it be nationality, age, etc.) has been such a wonderful experience. Some stories are similar, some are more individual to the person but seeing people talk about them together in the comments and being a community just gives me such a warm feeling that I can't really articulate.

One of the best things about this show is that it's 12+ here in the UK, which means that loads of parents are watching it with their families and kids as young as 9 or 10 years old. It’s been so useful for family discussions about growing up, friendships and relationships.

In episode 5 I felt so sorry for Imogen because if Nick’s (unintended) obliviousness towards her. Please do season 2 - you’ll love her (and Tao, BTW). OMg - Harry as Draco Malfoy! 😂😂😂 The Nick and Tao conversation in episode 8 is the catalyst for Nick. It’s what he needed to hear from someone who knows Charlie well. Even at this point Nick would walk through fire for that boy.

It was so much fun watching the rest of the season with you! I agree with a lot of the others that season 2 is far superior to season 1. Season 2 still has that Heartstopper wholesomeness, but it also deals with some heavier issues and has an overall more mature tone, which I really appreciate. Season 2 also introduces one of my favorite characters of the whole show.

Going by Nick's puzzled expression when Harry mentions the "Saturday date," I suspect Imogen never told him what the date was -- first he heard of the date/time. Also, noticed that Charlie's birthday party starts at 4pm in the afternoon and could probably be done by 7 or 8 pm; whereas Imogen is talking dinner and a movie (things that start later at night).
@elisabethbauman6190
@elisabethbauman6190 6 ай бұрын
This was my read on it. Basically, Nick nodded his head when Imogen planned out what they were going to do on the date, but they never actually discussed on which day it was going to happen. Nick probably thought he had more time to work out details with her, and she just assumed that Saturday was The obvious logical choice and went ahead and shared it with everyone. Either that or she mentioned they could do it on Saturday or a different day, and Nick was too distracted to confirm which day, so she went ahead and made the executive decision.

rugby, the thing about rugby is, as a brit i had to play rugby at school until the end of year 9(9th grade) i blocked most of it out though because i didnt like playing sports. i know i played it by the rules, but immediately forgot half of them as soon as i no longer had to play it in PE/sports. so to answer the question of its a running thing here that people don't know the rules, yes sort of. we vaguely know, but unless you are actively a fan, the rules get forgotten.

Just an FYI - Solitaire was written when Oseman was still in high school, and is probably her weakest novel - not that it's bad! But it's not her best work. I Was Born For This and Loveless are my personal favourites of hers. If you want a Heartstopper tie-in, I really recommend Radio Silence - it follows Aled (the character in the graphic novels who Isaac is based off of) and it was written a little after Solitaire, when Oseman had a bit more writing experience.

I think a lot of people forget Imogen was also peer pressured by Harry and them to ask him out, she didn’t want to ask him out right then and there, that’s why she understood what he was saying on the bench, she feels the same way with the friendgroup as Nick. Also imo it was NOT Elle’s place to tell tao. She basically outed nick, she exposed their relationship and it was honestly a very horrible thing to do. Especially since she knew how tao is.
@KristinaEspinoza
@KristinaEspinoza 6 ай бұрын
That makes their conversation on the bench have a lot more depth, I really like that you pointed that out. Thank you. Also, didn't think about it like that but you're absolutely correct. Elle essentially outed Nick to Tao. I'm surprised no one ever brings it up.

@@KristinaEspinoza I've seen some people say that during the milkshake scene, Nick was the one who initiated the move for Charlie and Nick to come out to the whole group of triple-daters. Tao had not returned to the table yet. So in effect Nick had implied his permission to include Tao in his own outing.

idk if anyone has said anything about this but in episode 5 when charlie introduces nick to everyone and he says “she looks familiar” about elle, i always assumed it’s because nick recognized her since he knew her pre-transition before she left truham and went to higgs and hadn’t met her after her transition. so she looked familiar but he couldn’t put his finger on it
@ashlynnsiobhan
@ashlynnsiobhan 2 ай бұрын
I do think that's what it was meant to say. Charlie goes on to say that she used to go to their school and that she's in Nick's year. With Elle, no one ever says she's trans just that she used to go to truham and is now at Higgs. It's obvious what that means but they don't make Elle being trans her whole story or her only defining characteristic.

I loved your reaction and review! You’re so sweet (as is your Charlie plush), and I can relate to your feelings watching this show as a fellow queer millennial. ❤ The casting director killed it and earned his Emmy, especially with Joe (Charlie) and Kit (Nick), and especially considering Joe had zero professional experience or connections, he just sent in a self-tape to the show’s open call. And his and Kit’s first chemistry read was over Zoom, but apparently it was just that good! Most of the young cast came into Heartstopper new to screen acting (lots of debut performances), with the exception of Kit and Sebastian Croft (Ben) who had much more experience. The commenter who said Joe and Kit auditioned for each other’s roles first was half right. Joe auditioned for Charlie and got the role obviously, but Kit and some of the other male actors (the Ben actor for example) also auditioned for Charlie first. A fun fact is that long before the show or audition opportunity was on Joe’s radar, he had a friend recommend he read the comics, telling Joe how much Charlie reminded them of him. He put off actually reading them, until he saw the open call for the role online and decided to do his research. :) The first season of the TV show follows volumes 1 and 2 of the graphic novels. Season 2 covers volume 3 (plus the final scene of volume 4 too). Season 3 will cover the rest of volume 4, volume 5, and the novella “This Winter.” Possibly some stuff from Solitaire too. FYI, Heartstopper is not a sequel to Solitaire - it’s more like a prequel, but the comic catches up with the book (and the spinoff novella This Winter) in volume 4. Alice has a timeline on their website that breaks it all down. But if you read Solitaire now, you’ll be spoiling some aspects of volume 4 and season 3 for yourself.
@elisabethbauman6190
@elisabethbauman6190 6 ай бұрын
The above comment is an accurate correction regarding the auditioning process (and accurate about everything else, too). I just wanted to point out that the reason why everyone auditioned for Charlie's role is because that was the role for which they held the open audition. They did not advertise an audition for Nick, so if you wanted to be seen by the casting director, you had to audition for Charlie or a different, more minor role. From the RCW Literary Agency website's description of the casting call (which is still up): "While the characters Nick and Tara are in advanced casting stages already, Netflix and See-Saw Films are still actively seeking people to audition for the lead roles of Charlie, Tao, Elle, Darcy and Isaac, and they're also on the look out for Tori, Harry, and Ben." I do not know what happened to the original actor who was cast to be Nick, but Kit Connor auditioned after this message and got the role in spite of it not being officially open.
@asinbumble
@asinbumble 6 ай бұрын
@@elisabethbauman6190 That may be true, but I’m not 100% sure that Kit even auditioned through the open call? Both he and Bash (who also auditioned for Charlie first) were established child actors, so they may have gotten a foot in the door earlier in the process. I think all Kit’s said is that his agent contacted him with the opportunity to audition for Charlie, which perhaps they just thought was a good fit for him at the time. Then we know that eventually Joe and Kit did chemistry reads with each other, and with one other option for Nick/Charlie. So it seems they probably tried four possible permutations and (thankfully) landed on Joe and Kit. But for all we know Kit was one of the actors in “advanced casting stages” when the open call was announced. (Unless he’s said otherwise and I missed it, which is entirely possible!)

It definitely tackles some more mature themes, or, at least, they acknowledge some of the things that they didn’t get as deep into in this season. Also, I was never a huge Tao fan, I like him better in season 2, but he kinda has his own trauma that wasn’t mentioned and we hear about that, and we start to really see why he’s so protective of his friends, specifically Charlie. We see further development of a lot of other characters as well.

Your comments are very interesting to me. The fact you mentioned you that you ‘wish you there were shows like this when you were in high school’ made me smile and hurt a little bit too. I am probably the oldest person to subscribe to your channel but hey, good content is good content right? (talk about skewing your demographics!) Anyway, I was in high school in the 1970’s and graduated in 1980’s and I could not have ever imagined there could be shows, books, music, much less a television show like “Heartstopper”. I knew I was different before I was a teenager. The first time I recognized there might be other guys like me was during a cross country car trip when I was around 6 or 7 years old, my father looked out of the driver’s window into another car and said “Look at those two guys, a couple of fa@@#ts hugging and kissing.. disgusting!” I realized I was one of those “disgusting” ‘fa@@#ts’. I learned in one brief moment I too was disgusting and something obviously broken and unnatural. It took allot of years to get over that one sentence from my father. Get over it I did. My husband and love of my life watched “Heartstoppers” together and we went through a box of tissues together. Like you, I am so happy young people have shows, books, movies and even music showing people in the LGBTQ+ community have worth and value and the deserve love and to be happy. Thank you for your wonderful reaction videos! Please keep standing up for love and acceptance throughout your life because the rights and the openness we have today can be taken away so very easily. 👍🏼

Thank you so much for your comment and being vulnerable. You're welcome to skew with my demographics anytime! I also had a similar experience. I spent majority of my childhood around family members who expressed that lesbians and gay men made them feel "uncomfortable with their PDA" and as a kid at the time, I internalized that as me being a problem. It really affected how I viewed other queer people around me and that there was something inherently wrong with us. I don't think I got over it until maybe my late teens/early twenties when I finally made friends with queer women who helped me get over my experience as a kid, teaching me that it's okay to hold a girl's hand in public, and that by making homophobes comfortable, I was only suppressing my true self. I'm still working on it but being exposed to media like this now has been helping a lot (and making me cry a lot too over what I missed as a teenager). You and your husband sound like wonderful people, and I'm glad the show touched your hearts as it did mine. It's so uplifting to see this type of representation now, even if it feels a bit late for some of us. Thank you again for your comment, it really moved me.

We could have used some real sex education and factual information about LGBT+ issues. My mom, when I asked her what the word 'homosexual' meant, sent me to a dictionary, which did not help. (I was VERY young and having a book use words like "sexual love" was meaningless to me.) She tried a watered down explanation for me, referring to "boys who want to marry boys." (The article that I had read referred to homosexuals as men, so she was doing the best that she could, at the time. ) More important than her attempt to define the term was what she said next: "Don't let anybody tell you that these people are bad." That attitude/outlook is what stuck. In the fall of 1969, I was walking down Telegraph Ave in Berkeley on my way to the dorms. I looked over on the other side of the street, and saw two guys, who looked like any other long-haired college students, greet each other with beautiful smiles, and then kiss. I felt blissed out by the display of love. (I did not know it at the time, but this was just a few months after Stonewall) When I got to the women's dorm and described this beautiful sight to a couple of the girls, I was surprised to hear them speak so disdainfully about the guys, calling them "sick." All I could say in response was "Looked like love to me." Which ended the conversation. So yes, a story like Heartstopper would have been very helpful for all of my generation (and for those beyond). (I'm just glad that the generations that come after me will have these stories to help them along.)

Please know that Heartstopper is NOT a sequel to Solitaire-though it was written much earlier, it takes place *after* seasons 1 and 2 (books 1-3, and first half of book 4) of Heartstopper, and if you read it before finishing those Heartstopper chapters, you’ll definitely encounter spoilers.

I love your reaction so much. And the edited in reactions are *chef's kiss* The romance in this show is so wonderful. But I also adore the friendships. And the characters are so well rounded, even when we know only a little about them. And the more we find out and learn the more colourful and alive they become.

I absolutely loved your reaction and I agree with everything you said at the end of this vid. I simply cannot wait for you to react to season 2. Season 1 introduced the characters and season 2 definitely expanding them and made them more in-depth. They really are so well written and I've heard the sentiment of this being around when queer millennials were younger then their lives would have been different/safer. I've seen so many youtubers say that and I whole heartedly agree.

I'm glad you liked it! I'm really excited to learn about the characters more and their backstories. I think the first season is a great set-up, so I'm eager. As a queer millennial, although the show makes me think of a life that could have been - it's still healing to watch it now. I have family who are queer youth and knowing they have access to a show like this makes me feel a bit better about not having it during my teen years lol

ima 37-year-old old bi guy and this series makes me cry. started seeing queer representation on tv when I was about 20 with series like Skins. I had figured myself out just a couple of years before, but the representation was always very sexual and I was never a very sexual person, so it didn't really fit. I WISH I had something like this when I was younger.

I don't necessarily feel the same as I feel like a lot of people of our age feel about having benefited from a show like this when we were younger. I feel like I'm probably around the same age as you. We made our own gay and there have been tons of awesome gay media that is powerful and can help you feel safer and more comfortable exploring something. It also is just a little bit lost in the shuffle because of where societally it was prioritized as a piece of ongoing media. I love heartstopper today. I'm one of those people who legitimately watched it completely by accident. Rarely on Netflix. I had a shit ton of laundry to fold and it probably had just come out that day and I was just like "I'll just pick whatever the first thing is." This show is beautiful for today, but it wouldn't have felt as poignant and genuine 20 years ago.

More yays: You said that you think this is something that millennials would have appreciated. I've read other comment sections for other reaction videos, and there are people ages high school to my age (72) who appreciate it. Many older lgbt+ people say thay wished that they had had a show like this when they were teens. Kit Connor (plays Nick) has gotten tweets and other messages from teens who sat down with their parents to watch the show, in preparation for coming out to the parents. Kit names that fact as one of the major things he's proud of about the show. Also, I'm really glad for the bi representation in the show. When I was a young adult, the information and prejudices surrounding bisexuality were horrible. My son (a millennial) says that between the early 1990s until just recently, T V shows did not mention bisexuality as a thing or as a word. If you've watched Buffy: TVS, you'll know that Willow had a relationship with a man early on in the series and with Tara later on. Joss Whedon, the creator, was told by TPTB that Willow could not use the word bisexual to describe herself, because the prevailing 'view' was that bisexuality did not exist. (As a barb aimed at TPTB, Whedon has Willow say (more than once, I think) "I think I'm kinda gay.") In Heartstopper, Nick learns that he is bisexual and I don't think it's really a spoiler if I tell you that he insists on that identity for himself many times throughout season 2.

Huh - I always wondered why everyone called Willow gay, including herself, when she clearly had meaningful attractions to both Oz and Xander. I thought her reaction to seeing herself in Doppelgangland was funny (the first "I think I'm kinda gay"), but it never sat right with me that they spent Season 4 and on calling Willow gay, which felt like bi-erasure. I guess it really was, explicitly, bi-erasure.

Knowing that this show has been helping teenagers prepare their parents for them coming out is so wonderful. I was blessed that my mom grew up around a queer community in her teens so she was completely fine by my own coming out but I know for some of the queer friends I have now, that their teenage experience of coming out didn't go as smooth. It's good to know the impact this show is having for queer youth outside of just being a wholesome show. And your son isn't wrong! I remember that being one of my pet peeves during my younger years, that explicitly bisexual characters in media never once said their sexuality or uttered the word, 'bisexual'. I think it's still somewhat an issue for some because I know one of the major writing issues for Stranger Things is that the show writers never have their queer characters outright say their sexual identities. Which caused a whole debate online around one of the main characters of the cast in S4. I guess that's another point I can give Heartstopper, is that the writers don't shy away from characters saying their sexual identities as if they were 'bad words'. It helps people normalize it rather than shy away from it.

If you'd like to try more Alice Oseman, you should check out 'Loveless.' It's a New Adult novel about a university student discovering her asexuality, so it's a little more mature than Heartstopper but still wholesome. To my mind, it handles the subject well; I think I heard it's based on Oseman's own experiences. Anyway, great to see some ace/aro rep! :)
