Something that I noticed specifically about Iji as a war counselor, as much as I love him, is that he's always wrong about stuff and then he says "I should have seen it coming" which I think it really funny because he's wearing the big mirror hat/mask, so he probably can't see much of anything

From software does have a habit of covering the faces/eyes of giants. The blacksmith in dark souls 1 and the giants of Sens Fortress all have metal plates covering their faces. Not to mention Hawkeye Gough is blind and also has a face covering helmet. And now Iji has a helmet covered in mirrors

there's also Balor, the irish giant with a large eye that wreaks destruction when opened and is said to embody the scorching sun. He's said to be a fomorian, a supernatural race. he's killed by his grandson Lugh of the Tuatha Dé Danann in the battle of Mag Tuired, reminds me a lot of radagon and the war on the giants. also notable is lugh is associated with mercury

The point about the Greeks believing the Mycenaean architecture being built by giants/Cyclopes is interesting, because much of Uhl's architecture looks like it has been built by giants. The doorways are always unnecessarily large and the bricks often way too large to be shifted by normal beings.

Glad you’re giving credit to the Hebrew influence with the fingers. I happened to be watching a lot of lecture videos about Kabbalah right before Elden Ring came out and it seems to me like the game borrows a lot from the teachings of Kaballah. Fingers, trees, cups/jars/vessels for God’s will, and even the shattering are all concepts in Kaballistic interpretations of the Hebrew Bible.

Elden Ring is all alchemical, which is a gnostic ritual. Gnosticism is a religion that wears the skin of other religions and changes its name, and kaballah is the Jewish version of Gnosticism. It is impressive how From appears to have plumbed the depths of gnostic history so thoroughly.

On the topic of Miquella being mercury, and the tree of life, I've actually been drawing similarities between the Shard Bearers and the Sefirot on the Tree of Life. So far, the only ones that really fit are Miquella and Malenia, but it's still really fun to speculate. Here are my notes so far: Miquella as Hod - Means Majesty, Splendor, or Glory - Associated Angel: St Michael (Feminine: Michaela) - Alchemical Symbol: Mercury and purification - Represents Submissive Diplomacy - Guardian of Dreams/Formation/Unconscious - Qliphoth is represented by St Michael's Abduction by Demons - Occult association with Hermes/Hermaphrodite and Wisdom (Monad, Mind of All) Malenia as Netzach - Means Eternal, Perpetuity, Victory - Associated Angel: Anael (Masculine: Oniel) - Alchemical Symbol: Sulfur and fermentation - Represents Endurance and Willpower - Guardian of the weak and righteous (St Michael in particular) - Qliphoth represented by demonic ravens spewed out of a volcano - Occult association with Venus and Fertility (Babylon, Mother of All) Maliketh as Malkuth - Means Kingdom/Foundation - Associated Angel: Sandalphon - Alchemical Symbol: Earth/ Prima Materia - Represents Earth, the beginning and the end, as well as the bridge between life and death - Guardian of Dwellings, Life, and Death - Qliphoth is represented by the bridge to the Cosmic Tree of Death - Occult association with Earth, Death, and the Cosmic Tree of Death Keep in mind these are similarities and they do not make up a definitive list of all the relevant traits of the Sefirot For those who aren't familiar, the Qliphoth represent the inverted or hollow forms of the Sefirot, and are sometimes called the Husks. They usually represent the same aspect as their matching sefirot, except they are lacking in balance and are taken to their most corrupt extreme.

I don't know if this is at all relevant to Elden Ring because I'm a big dummy when it comes to lore and like having it explained to me, but yesterday I was working on my conlang, got interested in Sumerian and ended up reading a bunch about Mesopotamian myths. One thing that stood out to me was the genealogy of Enki (his name means Lord of Earth but he is god of water). His dad was An (sky daddy) who used to be one with Ki (earth mommy) until Enlil (Lord of Breath) was born of them, splitting Earth and Sky in two with Wind in the middle. An and Ki's parents were the siblings Anshar and Kishar (sky and earth, but bigger), who begot them when they met at the horison, and THEY had another pair of sibling-parents called Lahmu and Lahamu, but what's important here is who Lahmu and Lahamu's parents were: Tiamat and Abzu. According to the creation myth, before the creation of heaven and earth there was just water. Two oceans: one above ground and the other underground. Tiamat is the chaotic dagon-like godess of the salted overground ocean, while Abzu is the god of freshwater aquifers and a purifying force. In the Enuma Elish, Abzu is killed by his descendants, so Tiamat swore revenge but is defeated herself, but not before creating the dragons and all other monsters. Idk these Sumerian inspired underground cultures kind of reminded me of that and maybe the Lake of Rot tells the story of a once pure underground aquifer that turned putrid and stagnant in the absence of its water god?

Separate comment just to say wow, the level of detail and scrutiny that the FromSoft team must've gone through to accomplish this crazy lore combobulation is incredible! They managed to represent so much, and to tie their worldbuilding in to the architecture in a manner that lets us compare it to our own IRL, and develop a timeline through these allegories! I love it. The interaction and theorizing has been awesome, thank you for being such an awesome contributor/lore theory person ^_^ Enjoy your break from all of the deep analysis, I had to walk away from Elden Ring for like 2 months before I was ready to dive in to the lore again.

Interesting note on the Nox and their Gothic style. I believe Gothic architecture is named after the Goths, not necessarily built by them. The term was used in the 17th century to insult this new style of architecture, comparing it to the "barbaric Goths who sacked Rome". This might mean that the Nox were buried a lot more recently than we may think and may give us an idea of how people felt about them before they were buried too!
@quelaag
@quelaag 2 жыл бұрын
So the Goths were given the Western Roman territory and it was during their time that those structures were built. Its not to say while they were a normadic tribe they were building crazy cathedrals in the underground, but rather a visual hint that hey - these people - may be involved in taking over Leyendell (Which they are! Given that "Queen Marika" is known as Queen Marika the Eternal, aka, from the Eternal Cities!)
@InnsannaStories
@InnsannaStories 2 жыл бұрын
@@quelaag Gothic Architecture postdates the Goth culture/civilization by about 500 years; gothic architecture is 12th century at its earliest (and extends into the 17th) and the last of the Goth kingdoms fell to the Umayyad Caliphate in the 8th century. By that point there was already France proper and the remains of Gothic culture existed almost entirely in Crimea. Gothic culture survived in the west longest in Iberia, but gave way to romance languages and postlatin culture by that point, a process that had started as early as the 6th century with the renunciation of Arian Christianity by the Gothic kingdoms in favor of Catholicism. Gothic architecture, in other words, has absolutely nothing to do with the Goths; the name comes from Renaissance architects of the proto-neoclassical movement who sought to emulate Roman architecture, and this referred to this post-Roman architecture as "Gothic". Hope this helps.

The branch sword for sure appears in Japan, but it actually originated in Korea. This still doesn’t explain why they used a Scandinavian motif on the talisman in ER. However, it does shed some light on Sekiro’s ending where Kuro wishes to return the dragon’s heritage to the West. The divine dragon arrived from the west and wields a branched sword, so it’s likely that he wants to return it to Korea. I may be remembering wrong, but I believe the type of dragon used for its model is also stylistically a Korean dragon.

HOLY SHIT, IT'S MOAR LOAR!!!! Absolutely loving your videos recently, hope you're doing well! Edit: also, I love how we keep adding more aliens. It represents the madness in all of us. Edit edit: I know your tone is totally in jest, but there is a lot of reason to doubt that humans lacked language during the height of the stone age. I've mentioned The Dawn of Everything before, which covers the recent research on the topic. But Elden Ring is probably operating with more typical assumptions, which is why it goes for the beast thing, like you said. But it is interesting to note that this trope doesn't seem to be supported archaeologically. (this also goes for things like politics, rights, and broader social practices; it seems humans have been pretty much doing that stuff since we first evolved) Edit Edit Edit: Great analysis. Your take away at the end is fucking perfect. S tier. Fuck yes. Also, wonderful that you're considering a break to avoid burnout. Put you first!

Life, and systems of power, engage in change and are temporary. Our sun and planet are temporary. We are temporary. But don’t give into despair about it (frenzied flameee) Mortality and things ending and beginning anew is divine as it’s a part of nature! It’s just hard to feel it or see it because a lot of societies idealize the idea of immorality There is a great Buddhist monk named Thic Nhat Han who actually had a KZbin channel called plum village. He had a great talk about what is the hardest thing to do for a monk. He said it’s despair. He survived the Vietnam war trying to rebuild villages that kept getting destroyed. He said to not despair was important in achieving that

21:24 Two things, originally I saw this symbol and realized that it resembles a fork when turned upside down. This may have inspired Mohg's trident weapon design. Additionally, I have a wild speculation. The staff thing that looks like it has a primordial fire coming out of the top, held by two bears (?)...it looks familiar. It's not even close to a 1-to-1 representation, but doesn't it look kinda like Mohg's Sacred Spear? The staff even has a slightly smaller handle-area towards the bottom of the shaft, and there's at least one thickened band that is placed in a similar location to one of the bands on the spear. And...there's fire coming out of the top of it, and these weird laurels all around the staff in an AoE... Maybe that "bird" at the bottom of the staff isn't an object, but is signifying an /action/ , like slamming the spear down onto the ground? What if Mohg's Nihil ritual (which uses blood*flame* power) is a mix of old and new, with the ritual being based on an even-older Uld ritual of some sort, albeit adapted to the Formless Mother's power? Is there, dare I say, any connection between the Formless Mother and the Uld, and therefore possibly a reason that Mohgwyn was led by Her to go squat on ancient burial grounds? Probably not, but I could at least see Mohg going through ancient Uld tablets and learning about their incantations, resulting in his spin on it/the Bloodflame incantations.

We are predisposed to seek out patterns to make sense of our reality. It can become a trap that fascinates us, to be fascinated by a symbol, and trapped by it. Worth noting the ancient Minoan civilisation had both advanced bureaucracy _and_ cannibalistic tendencies not at all matching the Ancestral Followers. The myth of the Minotaur is meant to demonise them but that depiction doesn't match Elden Ring either as the Minotaur very obviously is _not_ spiritual at all but rather an unintelligent carnivorous monster. I wonder how much of this is actually meant to evoke a chronological order rather than simple disparity. We know of certain civilisations existing at the same time in Elden Ring but that includes Godfrey's Leyndell, the Bronze Age-inspired Fire Giants and the "Ancient" Dragons under Gransax. The Fire Giants are said to be the first to have invented smithing, fought (and won) against the _modern_ ice wyverns, lived alongside the Astrologers who would move to Raya Lucaria and yet we are supposed to believe that after their initial invention they never progressed beyond Bronze Age technology right until Marika and Godfrey wiped them out? And the dragons had an Elden Lord entombed below Farum Azula despite Godfrey supposedly being the first, plus a root-covered Elden Ring design, and Farum Azula itself mixes really ancient RL burial practices with quite elaborate architecture with columns, balustrades and domes as well as candelabras on par with a menorah. We also know some architectural elements have to be deliberately "retro" if you compare Elphael to Leyndell and Farum Azula so I doubt we can draw a proper timeline from similarities to RL historical architecture. And why isn't there any ancient Egypt in Limgrave or Caelid?

I think that if you look at the banner at the East capital Rampart, that is the earliest tree adoration and the banner with the skinny tree was the original and now if you see the symbol in the Elden Throne you see that the Erdtree and the rings were put in in the skinny tree (East Capital Rampart tree) Is like they say that the confusion is whether there is a great tree and erdtree and where is it, well they are intertwined and that is the symbol in the Elden throne. because you can see the skinny tree that is in the banner in the symbol. IMO.

I would like to add a possible connection with babylonians The giant walls of leyndell might be inspired from From the walls of uruk which was built by Gilgamesh a mythical demigod to protect the city. Also godfrey might be inspired by Gilgamesh both are demigods both are warrior Kings both have lion's as symbols and shown with a lion's in arts and statues finally both are on a quest to get their powers back Gilgamesh to gain immortality and be q full god and godfrey to become an elden lord which mean godhood.

It occurred to me a while back that in the Lands Between, immortal souls seem bound in an eternal cycle of being born into the world, living, dying, and returning to a pool of souls to start over (currently that's returning to the Erdtree, but the cycle seems older than that). Meanwhile, the Outer Gods seem to be in constant dispute over who gets to design the mortal shells those souls inhabit during their time walking the realm. The Greater Will seems to like meat people (even its envoys are big meat fingers), as does whatever God made the Twinbird and the Deathbirds. But then you have whatever send down a meteor that created the Onyx lords (and their kin), and whatever made the Crystalians, which seems to be going for mineral people. Then there's whatever made the dragons, and the giants, and the trolls, and so on and so forth. If you ask me, that really doesn't sound _that_ dissimilar to the Aztec creation myth. It's possible there's some connection there.

its kinda interesting cause george r.r. martin did an interview with stephen colbert and he said "what [fromsoftware] wanted me to write was what happened 5000 years before that that totally screwed up the world" and all of the historical places talked about in this video go back about 5000 years from modern day. so maybe modern day elden ring, if were saying miyazaki is pretty much copying human history almost to a t, is 10000 years in the future from those tablets and obelisks and what not. i dunno im high

The Numen, who built the Nox cities, are not from the Lands Between so their architecture should be an anomaly. The only real timeline requirement is that they must have been in the Lands Between before the establishment of the Erd Tree since Marika is one of them.

Gothic architecture isn't actually the architecture of the Goths per se, it's actually French originally, probably influenced by Arab/Persian architecture with it's more delicate and open styles admitting more light. It just got lumped with the moniker "Gothic" during the Renaissance as a byword for "barbaric" by advocates of the Neo-Classical style

@@Interfuge When I said some twistings I meant reality has been twisted to fit within the story they wanted to tell with Dark Souls. As the luciferians see it God held Adam and Eve captive in the garden and "the snake" gave them freedom. Now if you study some scripture it tells you that the seat of Satan was in Pergamos and you can find the temple of Zues is located there. Long story short (there is more that needs explaning) Gwyn is Satan/Zues and that darksign is his twisted symbol of the curse of flesh within the Dark Souls lore.

This video be old, so who knows if you'll see this. But the "giants" in myth always being actually huge is pretty much just a Greek thing. This isn't a failure or misunderstanding on your part, this is a misunderstanding on basically everyone's part, especially due to the incomplete translation of the word Jotun. While the Jotun of Norse myth were sometimes quite large, their name does not mean GIANT, it means DEVOURERERS, the Jotun were beings that consumed things. Some people attribute this quality to the metaphysical concept of chaos, but I disagree. To me, this embodies more the concept of entropy. The Jotun are beings which embody the necessary end of all things, not inherently death although that does play into entropy, but more the idea of things running their natural coarse and eventually completing, being done, and making space for the new. I find the most ancient of powers within Greek myth embody these same ideas, the first beings born of Gaia, Chaos, and Nyx who are cosmically huge yet simple, while some also being of actual tremendous size. And in Irish myth we see this too in the Fomorians, primal powers of the below, and again some of "people" size and some monstrously huge. But even with the misunderstanding of their size and purpose, creatives like Miyazaki and his team do understand the thematic consistency that the giants will embody or signal the end of an age, and much like Odin who desperately strived to keep his age and his power from ending, so too do all these powers like Gwyn like Marika also seek to stop the giants from ending their age and power as well.
