Basically exactly the same principle as thinking in the shower, or taking a nature walk, or meditating (depending on the type). It’s actually backed up by neuroscience, following periods of focus allow yourself to clear your mind or have some deep rest, and your subconscious mind will do some background thinking/daydreaming.

💫 So weird that you would post this now as I have just started "Once Upon a Time...", the novel. He is remarkable.

I really wish I was at least half as talented as any of these writer /director folks. Seems like a very chilled out and rewarding life.

Keep in mind, none of these writers/directors were talented when they started out. As even Tarantino has put it, every person that was ever good at a thing was first bad at that thing. From the trial and error mistakes, they got good. It may be discouraging to think you're not as good as Quentin Tarantino starting out, but then again even _Quentin Tarantino_ wasn't as good as Quentin Tarantino when he started out. Even he made "My Best Friend's Birthday" (a film so bad that, when he saw the rough cut, he decided not to finish it), before he made "Reservoir Dogs." You have to do it bad to learn how to do it good, because then you can look back and go _okay, what was it I did wrong?_

That's not entirely true. Being a great writer requires a degree of talent, but without the persistence and dedication toward improving at the craft, you won't get far.@@MrMarsFargo

No, his advice is to step away from your work and meditate on what you wrote in a soothing environment.
