@@kevinlakeman5043 I watch Flowers In the Attic and Killer Klowns from Outer Space. They all excel in different aspects of Horror, and, yes, a 2.5-5 million dollar studio budget is still a lot of money, but my gripe is with movies like The Exorcist, which went $2.5 million ($13.8 million in 2023) over budget. How many times do we have to repeat that formula already!! It is there. It is called The Exorcist!! The Exorcist III is a way better movie than The Exorcist.

I loved all three of M Night Shyamalan's first movies. Sixth Sense broke the mold of what a ghost story could be, Unbreakable broke the mold of what a super hero movie could be and Signs broke the mold as to what an alien invasion movie could be. They all felt fresh and new.

He truly was the new wonder boy on the block in those early days. Signs is my favorite, but not much more than the previous two. After Signs his films became very hit or miss, often times the latter.

I've since developed a deep seated dislike for Signs, on a lot of levels, but 6th Sense and Unbreakable are both fantastic films. Unbreakable being my favorite.
@joshwwarren5 ай бұрын
@@happyninja42 Why dislike Signs? I think it is still pretty creepy and off-putting even if the plot is pretty silly on pretty much all levels. I still think it is "good" for that reason.
@happyninja425 ай бұрын
@@joshwwarren Primarily because of the "it was all part of his great plan" religious plot element, that is the start and finish of the story. Since I've become an adult, and openly stated I'm an atheist, I find this particular trope incredibly annoying, but with Signs, it's incredibly insulting. I mean seriously, based on that element, this is what happens. God intentionally makes a guy driving a car sleepy (when he's never had that problem before), at JUST the right moment so that god could KILL Mel's wife, so that her almost dead, blood starved brain was apparently in the perfect state to receive a cryptic message from him? A message that only comes to fruition like a year later? I mean, why not just send a fucking text message? Or a burning bush maybe? Did he really have to assassinate Mel's WIFE, leaving behind an entirely traumatized family, bereft of a loving mother during their formative childhood, and for the rest of their lives, in order to convey the following details. "The aliens don't like water, be sure to have your son's epi pen handy, and make sure your little brother keeps his bat, because they are also weak to blunt force trauma, from the most basic of weaponry." An then, as a result of this, Mel's character rediscovers his faith in god...the same god who MURDERED HIS WIFE to convey an incredibly mundane, and delayed warning. Because that's the emotional plot thread of this film. Man loses faith in god due to tragedy (which is what Hollywood thinks makes atheists, when the reality is entirely different), but then is able to overcome his trauma, and return to the default human state, which is believing in an invisible sky daddy, because he now understands god's bigger picture. And all it cost, was his beloved wife, loving mother to his 2 children, and a life of grief and loss. But praise geezus and the sky daddy! All is right in the world again! He's given up his nasty non-belief! And it's just tiresome, trite, insulting, and simply incorrect. So that is the main reason I dislike the film now. There are some minor critiques of writing, acting, editing etc. But for the most part, I think the structure, visually is perfectly fine. But the emotional plot is utter shit. Like super ridiculous utter shit.

It was the first thing I saw him in after Moonlighting and was shocked how good he was at drama.

The subtly of the plot of Unbreakable, the NOT knowing what was going on, is what gave the movie so much power seeing it for the first time. It's a favorite of mine...and it's awesome how, due to its "unassuming" quiet reception, and the fervor of those of us whom adored it so...we got TWO very unexpected sequels!! We weren't told about it, ther was barely a hint of that possibility...and that's amazing to achieve in this day and age. ❤️🎬

I remember Siskel and Ebert reviewing the movie, and they cited the “not knowing” aspect as something they liked best. Ebert said the movie is “still building” after it’s over. Good point about the subtle release of the sequels but, man, Glass ruined everything for me. I now treat Unbreakable as a standalone film.

@eyeheartsushi2212 I do 100% agree with your opinion of Glass. Personally, tears of complete surprise and joy appeared at that brilliant final scene. I was already locked in, ready to buy another ticket and watch it again, and then that scene...It was filmmaking at its finest, M.Night style! He's a great director for his major wins as well as his...mmm...not-so-winning fair, it's the not knowing with each project, yet its all the same and familiar. Thanks for taking the time! ❤️🎬👍👍

I disagree with QT on this one. Finding out that the movie was a secret superhero origin story was the best thing about it. All of his arms and legs are broken." It's such an unthinkable occurrence, it devastates me every time. The second scene that gets to me is at the breakfast table when David finally confirms his son's suspicions by sliding that morning's newspaper describing a "hero" rescuing the imprisoned family. They lock eyes, and David nods, but puts a finger over his mouth indicating him to keep this secret between them, and not to tell his mother. I couldn't even tell you how many times I've seen this film. At least once or twice a year since its debut. Likely many more times than I've seen any other "super hero" film, second probably being the Iron Giant (1999). Neither typical of its sort.

I think by and large, most general audiences fell out with Shyamalan due to his plots becoming less bulletproof to normie logic ("if they die to water, why would they come to a planet full of water wtf"), but his originality with scripts was never his only strong suit. The guy can shoot the shit out of his films, his compositions, framing, etc have always been stellar, even and especially in Lady and Village, when he started to go downhill.

The deleted scenes from Unbreakable were INCREDIBLE. I remember the director saying he removed one scene because Bruce's acting was TOO GOOD, it showed too much character before the audience knew him.

I agree, it's a masterpiece of our time. The concept and writing were amazing. The entire main cast gave just perfect performances. The direction was great. One of my favorite movies of all time. I disagree with Tarantino about what the tagline should've been; not only would that have been a spoiler, but it would've diminished the experience for the audience.

A review in Ireland used the headline what if Superman was here and didn't know it. I went first weekend with my then girlfriend and we both felt we watched something amazing

I remember watching this movie back in the time it was released. The critics were terrible but I left the theatre really impressed. A real super hero movie before the MCU.

I always loved this movie, it's too bad that the superhero films that followed over the past two decades took nothing from it

Agreed. I also think The 6th Sense and Signs are masterpieces, right alongside Unbreakable. Shyamalan seems to be one of those artists who either sticks the landing perfectly or violently crashes and burns. The old saying "a the star that burns twice as bright burns half as long" seems appropriate here.

I knew Bruce was dead at the dinner table. It was a very odd scene that gave it away in my opinion.

He’s not wrong with his marketing campaign idea. But the fact we went into the theater not knowing and arrived at that very conclusion on our own is what makes it lasting. IMHO

I haven't watched Unbreakable, but I absolutely adore The Sixth Sense and The Village even though they are so much different from Tarantino movies. Sixth Sense is simply a perfect movie, but the Village is just pure beauty in all possible aspects (especially the music). Every second brings so much joy and so much hope and appreciation for the pure and simple things. It surprises me how little people talk about it. Tuomas Holopainen from Nightwish was back in 2005 probably the only celebrity to actively praise it

The scene where David's son is pointing the gun at him is the best scene Shyamalan has ever directed. I feel like if this film had done better Shyamalan would have gone down a different path as filmmaker.

Calling him superman is a pretty big stretch. More like Captain America. I know what if "someone was Captain America and they didn't know it" doesn't sound as good, but certainly more accurate. I'm glad this movie has been getting its due years later. I thought I was the only one who liked it. Somehow I got the movie on DVD and I can't remember even buying it and I was fascinated by it as soon as I watched it.
