GOOD for you artdoneus! Proud of you for taking the leap. You might fail for a bit but just keep taking a step towards your dreams, you'll make it eventually. One of QT's tips was getting to where people are working at a high level and NYC is one of them. Expensive city though... so hopefully you're good with that for a while. Good luck!

'Get the best lights to create good lighting and become a master at engineering and do this and that and this and that. No! No! No! No! Not at all! Never! You don't need to know any of that your job is not to do engineering or lighting all you need is a vision and express it' Love this advice, just have a vision and make into a film.

I'm pretty sure most new filmmakers like Ari Aster and Robert Eggers understand a lot of technical aspects of filmmaking... understanding a craft is paramount in expressing the vision for that craft. Quentin comes from a different day of filmmaking. Today you have to do it all to make it.

I love Tarantino and would love to have the kind of money to hire all the talents for my films. As an independent filmmaker, I have been responsible for all aspects of my films while holding down a 9 - 5. It usually takes me about 2 years to get a short made, and there are always a lot of struggles with people backing out for various reasons; people who couldn't get things done on time or meet my vision due to lack of time or money

Don't forget being a director is something that you have to earn. You should understand a little bit about things like sound design, cinematography, editing, etc. That way you can express your yourself better to the experts on those positions like Tarantino said.

It's true: costumes, light, music, set designer is not the director's job, but the director have to know. everything. An orchestral director cant' ask to the violin to make the sound of trumpet. The director's job is to comunicate your vision, but to have a complete vision, you need to know what can be done and what not.
@CurriedBat

Humm, what's QT's 10th film going to be?... The something his 9 films have been...bounty hunters and hitman. It's ALL he knows how to do. And for the record, he's NOT retiring after his 10th film. It's a half-sentence, he's going to retire making ONLY bounty hunter & hitman films.

The advice it’s not your job to know how but to hire people,, that’s the most damaging advice he has ever given. In order to get started you have to wear many hats to get your vision across. Unless you’re born into money or a school prodigy, it’s not going to be easy to “hire” talented people. Kinda of annoying advice to be honest
