The source of the best line from the first Schwarzenegger Conan ("If I were dead and you were still fighting for life, I'd come back from the darkness. Back from the pit of hell to fight at your side."), and the best line from the Mamoa Conan ("I live, I love, I slay, and I am content"). And one of the stories that reaffirms just how much needs to be changed for Conan to be successful in a modern film or show adaptation. (Unless of course one is going for an amoral Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad kind of feel.) Because in this story Conan is a literal pirate and viking, committing evil acts for his own gain. What most people seem to prefer is the idea of a character who is crude in manners, but with a strong moral core. This version of the character is present in most filmed versions of the tales (I can't speak for the comics), but not in the original tales themselves.

Love the Milius movie. Definitely debatable whether it captured Howard's Conan, but still can't get enough of it. But that might be Basil Poledouris's doing. Might be the greatest score ever put to film. Or at least I'm gonna say it til it's considered true. I liked Momoa in the role in the new one. And I really liked Stephen Lang in his role. Not really sure how they dropped the ball on that one.
@kforcer3 жыл бұрын
I think Milius's movie captured the essence of Robert E. Howard's mythos, but perhaps not Conan specifically. He was like an amalgam of various Howard figures. I'd say that Thulsa Doom, name aside, was a pretty spot-on portrayal of Thoth Amon though.
@chadstone74683 жыл бұрын
Because the momoa one was trying to be a remake instead of its own thing. That, and it's hard to live up to the original by milius
@joek6002 жыл бұрын
I believe that Milius was better at being Howard than Howard. His version of Conan is actually better as a story, but practically he had to work around Arnold's innability to act and even speak english. I always said that Conan the Barbarian is an arthouse movie disguised as a sword and sorcery flick. And has some really good dialogue that really made the difference beween that movie and the flood of the barbarian themed rip-offs that came after. Momoa was actually really good in that glorified Xena production, and I cant stop thinking what if Milius had someone with the right physique but also the ability to act.

Conan was always entertaining when he had to fight intelligent dangerous people, and that's why the first film worked, especially because there was a working arc to the story. It was always predictably boring when he was slaying down mindless monsters. That's what D&D is for... What works in comics doesn't necessarily work in movies. Comics can exaggerate or circumvent a lot more things that can't be done in film.
@kforcer3 жыл бұрын
Usually those intelligent people were trying to summon or control those seemingly mindless monsters. And of course, sometimes it was unclear if the monsters were mindless or avatars of dark gods and far smarter than we might be able to understand. Like that monster Thoth Amon summons in Hour of the Dragon, that thing was probably real smart in some strange way.
@hamuArt2 жыл бұрын
@@kforcer In hard fantasy, a straight monster fight wouldn't work for me, even if it were a puppet. A monster is like a lion or an enraged grizzly. There wouldn't be a long fight on either side, because it's either the monster or Conan who kills the other immediately, there wouldn't be much tactics there, precisely because of the imbalances of power. (Look at Conan vs the big snake.) Think of it like the arena in Rome. You can watch someone trying to fight a lion. It won't be long and exciting, just bloody. Plus, I wouldn't see the human in a beast, which makes a life-and-death fight more palatable and don't looks like just an obstacle.

Howard had written many stories set in many different time periods and with different characters in the late 1920's. Cowboys, boxers, oil field workers, mercenaries. Conan was one of his last characters and the first story was published in December, 1932. He wrote all the Conan stories in the next three and a half years and committed suicide in June, 1936. The first published Conan story, "The Phoenix on the Sword" was a prior King Kull story which was never published titled "By This Ax I Rule." That story was actually rewritten by Howard. The later pastiche writers, primarily L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Howard took some notes Howard had left turned them into stories. Then they took a lot of the other characters Howard had written, renamed the primary character and turned them into Conan stories. One character was a Spanish Crusader, another was an Arab adventurer in what is now Iran, one was an American mercenary in Africa.

The story is called Queen of the Black Coast and is a Robert E Howard short story.
@WalterWild-uu1tdАй бұрын
The one problem with the first Arnold Conan movie, when discussing the Robert E Howard "Lore" is the depiction of him being an enslaved child and then this owned gladiator character. In Howard's stories there was one thing that Conan NEVER was. He was never a "slave." Never. He was a captive and imprisoned several times but never a slave. And the only "lore" you get about his youth was he grew up in Cimmeria. His father was the village blacksmith, his mother was pregnant but was wounded trying to save her husband. She gave birth to Conan and then died. No other information about Conan emerges until at the age of fifteen, already a warrior of some note, went over the walls of an Aquilonian outpost of Venarium and participated in sacking it. Years later in Howard's first published Conan story, "The Phoenix on the Sword," Conan is already King of Aquilonia, some 20+ years later, because he is already in his 40's.

Ehhhh...I've never met anyone like Conan in real life. Conan is king material. He's a brutal killer on the battlefield but also cunning and tactical. He's intelligent and worldly, possessing the knowledge of many cultures and the ability to blend into or subjugate groups such as pirates, bandits, and tribals in whatever way suits his goals. Jason Mamoa seems like the nicest damned guy on the planet and everytime he opens his mouth he makes me think of him less as a badass and more as someone who I'd like to go camping with or call up for a game of pool. I don't know if the guy is smart or not, but I know he's no more "cunning" than John Candy. Arnold is the same way. He's quick to laugh and slow to anger. The guy is a real party animal and just wants to eat, smoke weed, and get laid in all the commentaries you hear him on. You need someone who looks like Mamoa, but acts sort of like Daniel Craig in Casino Royale. He's a steely-eyed murderer with a quick mind and a way with stealth and politics. The reason people like that usually don't exist is that it takes a lot of time to cultivate all those skills and abilities and most human beings just don't have the time to be that well-rounded, lol.

@Syntax "troglodytes" ? Oh my god are you for real? John Milius is one of the best directors of all times. Is he a troglodyte because "syntax from the internet" Doesn't share his political views?
@marcofassetta36743 жыл бұрын
@Syntax no dude, i am definitely not simpatico with Milius right wing political views, but his movies are definitely masterpieces. The Lion and the wind, farewell to the king, Conan, big Wednesday.. The guy even wrote apocalypse now , dirty Harry and Jeremiah Johnson. Hè is a symbol of the New Hollywood. If you Can't understand his movies, you probably understand nothing at all About movies. I was hoping you were mad because of his political views but that's not the case, well then i feel sad for You.

Rarely do I disagree with Quentin regarding movies, but this time I do. Conan The Barbarian (1982) was *the* Conan movie, far better than it's sequel Conan the Destroyer. If I had to guess why we disagree, it seems like it is because Quentin's introduction to Conan was through the comic books, while mine was through the old paperbacks.
@maingate7672 Жыл бұрын
''The Queen of the Black Coast'' her name was Belit. She was killed by a demon. I completely agree about the Jason Momoa '''Conan'' movie, the opening ten minutes, that kid was Conan. Had they done the whole movie like that, it would have a better movie than the Milius/Schwarzenegger film. As it was, it just fell completely flat. It was almost like a ''Hercules/Xena'' episode.

My main issue with the 2011 Conan movie is that it suffers from trying to satisfy both the hard-core Robert E. Howard Conan fans and the casual fans who only know Conan from the two Arnie movies and it fails at both. It suffers from the obsession with "motivation" that modern filmmakers and screenwriters have. We did not need the first 20+ minutes of the movie setting up a new origin story for Conan. At the most 5-10 minutes to set up the Hyborian Age and a little montage of Conan's origins being born on the battlefield etc. and then just get into the movie and if you frame it right you may not even need that much. I see Conan being introduced somewhat like they did James Bond. Honestly how much did we really know about Bond's backstory until "Casino Royale" and that was 21 films in. What you need to know about Conan is that he's a wandering barbarian warrior from Cimmeria and then drop him into the action. That being said Jason Mamoa is the closest any actor has ever come to portraying the character as REH wrote him.

Haha! Quentin Tarantino is one of those dangerous guys, when he's speaking about a film, you suddenly become possessed: "I've got to go and watch that movie (again) immediately!" Awesome. But that idea: Tarantino or Rodriguez doing a Conan could be brutally good... wonder if we'll see it?

Tarantino would botch Conan, doing some weird and quirky style mashup instead of making it like the books. They were books, not comics; that form would've already been an interpretation.
