I always thought Conan was Persian (the story is almost 1 to 1 of Kaveh the black Smith) he's referred to as a barbarian & also Cimmerian & Sumerian (a persian city) as well as Thusla Doom being Zahhak the serpent leader. The use of lions in Conan armour (persian lion). Also the horns on his helmet (not Viking from Viking history as we know but from Rostam the Persian equivalent of hercules) I feel like there's too many similarities & it can't be coincidence that Conan just happens to have a lot of similarities to Persian mythology/ culture. Also with Atlantis it was mentioned in Persian mythology. And geographically it would of most likely been under the Persian Empire not Greek or Roman. I know Conan is its own universe that draws inspiration from real history. But for me there's too many references pointing to Conan being from Persian inspiration mostly.

Only the authors of the time got away with that (not saying it's a bad thing) because people weren't as hypereducated about the world as our society is now, possibly no one would have heard about these kingdoms, which meant that keeping the names wouldn't break the veil, same goes for basing so much of their worlds on the real world, they didn't need to try as hard to make their setting outlandish, which allowed them to focus more on other aspects and put more polish into their stories

@@DenethorDurrandir you'd be surprised at how well educated the Americans were of the 20th century. The elementary school students were smarter than most of our high school students and they were also far more literate in comparison. Heck kids were reading Conan the Barbarian alongside The Shadow, Zorro, and Doc Savage just to name a few. By the time they were in middle school they were already reading The Iliad and The Odyssey before graduating on to the works of Shakespeare and Beowulf.

The Brythunians, known across the land for their dreaded light cavalry, rumored to be a proto-winged hussar. They ride rugged Steppe horses capable of riding on rough terrain for days on end and charging violently down the steep ravines that surround their heartland. Legend tells that eons ago, in their eleventh hour facing insurmountable odds against eastern barbarians, they were rescued by a mysterious mounted force of flying cavalry pouring from the northern mountain passes. We refer to them today as the mythical Valkyrie, but they were referred to as “Hushkai” which in the ancestral tongue meant “rider of death”. Thus the tradition remains today of swift riding cavalry donning dramatic wings as they ride fiercely into battle.

AFAIK King Arthur is rumored to be based on a Roman soldier stationed in the British isles and there was a renewed interest in the character after the Battle of Hastings hundreds of years later. Take that with a huge grain of salt, though. A lot of the Arthurian legends we think of now was basically fanfiction and idealized versions of chivalry.

Only king Arthur is derived from Welsh legend from the Mabinogi, there were historical figures like Vortigern and Ambrosius Aureliaunus that may have inspired the legend of king Arthur also. King Arthur however was an not inspired by any Anglo-Saxon rulers, he was in inspired mostly by native Brittonic Celts(Britons) who defended their lands from Anglo-Saxon invaders who arrived to Britain in the 5th century AD.

As far as I'm aware, nobody truly knows who King Arthur is based on. The main theory is that King Arthur is based on a Romano-British/Sub-Roman Brittonic warleader named Ambrosius Aurelianus (Emrys Wledig in Welsh) who helped defend against early Saxon invasions, particularly at the Battle of Badon Hill. Ambrosius is known to have existed, as his name is found in Roman records from that time.

To make a few additions, the Vilayet Sea was the Ottoman term for the Caspian Sea. The Turan Kingdom is more like a reflection of the Seljuks and the Ottomans. Because the origin of the Turanians is based on the Hyrkania steppes. A group of Hyrkanian nomads crossed the sea of the province and established a state on the western side, just as the Seljuks left the steppes and established a state in Iran and Anatolia. Hyrkanians, on the other hand, are similar to nomadic Turks and Mongols. The gods Tarim and Erlik worshiped by the Turanians and Hyrkanians. Erlik is Turkic god that exists in mythology. Also, Tarim evokes the word Tanrı (or old version Tengri) in modern Turkish.("Tanrım" means "my God" in modern Turkish) Also, in a Conan adventure, it was mentioned that the Turan king arrived in the capital before his brother and tried to take the throne. This was a direct reference to the Ottoman Sultan Selim I. It is also an old Turkic tradition for Turan kings to strangle their relatives with bowstring for political gain. The Turks believed that the ruling dynasty was commissioned by God and that their blood was holy. Therefore, members of the dynasty were not killed by the sword. The name of Yildiz, the King of the Turanians, is also Turkish name means "star". Although we use the name Yıldız for women today, we also used it for men in history. The country called Iranistan to the south of Turan represents Persian culture and they are enemies to each other, just as Turks and Persians were enemies to each other in history. Btw fantastic video. Thanks for sharing.

@@HamguyBacon What are you talking about? Before 1260, there were Seljuks in the region, before that, the Oghuz Yabgu State, the Khazar Khanate and Kipchak Khanate in the North of the Caspian Sea. If this is a reference to the Red Sea, the Stygian civilization must have been around it. Not the horse-ridden Turanians and Hyrkanians. It is the river Styx, symbolizing the Red Sea or Nile River. If you open the Hyborian Age map and look at it, you can see that the names of many settlements around the Vilayet Sea are similar to the names of places around the Caspian Sea in the real world.

Hyrkania; pronounced like Higher-kania, not Her-krania. Howard depicts Brythunians as fair skinned blondes and their culture as pretty much a vassal state of Aquilonia, but you're right, there isn't much to go on.. I found the inclusion of Yamatai in Exiles surprising as I believe they are not mentioned anywhere in Howard's work. L. Sprage De Camp slandered Howard's name, edited his books, while leaving the originals unavailable to the public, and said he wrote better Conan stories than Howard, despite missing the entire point of Conan. He would also take unrelated stories from Howard and change a few names here and a few things there to make a new book so he could profit and keep the rights to Conan. I would not advise any fan to read De Camp's Conan stories, as I would not recommend watching Batman and Robin to a batman fan, because they are utterly disloyal to the source material and because of the way De Camp did what he did.

@@user-nd7rg5er5g I suppose Batman and Conan are incomparable as Batman is a constantly fluctuating character who has many interpretations and many fans who enjoy all of them. But even still, fans of the 60s Batman and the later golden age and silver age comics don't like Batman and Robin, I'd argue no one does but little kids maybe. Also when it comes to new fans you wouldn't recommend Batman and Robin, and I hope you wouldn't recommend De Camp's Conan stories to new Conan fans either. A better comparison for Conan then would probably be Godzilla. Robert E. Howard's Conan is like Toho Godzilla and later Conans by other writers are more similar to the 1998 Tristar Godzilla, or Zilla. Zilla is a giant monster that destroys citys and is called Godzilla, but it isn't true to the character, in the same way De Camp's Conan isn't true to Howard's Conan. In my head canon, The pictes are the "ancestors" of all of the Native americans, Because most of the arts represent them being brown skinned, dark hair & eyes. Maybe the ones who landed in Hyboria eventually mixed with other cultures to become the scottish. But by the looks and name of their tribes, they are basically Natives americans.

Nice. I always toyed with the idea of doing a Conan run (TTRPG). I wanted it to be near the end of the Hyborian age, where magic is waning, Aquilonia has long since fallen, the peoples in & around Stygia aren't even calling it Stygia anymore.

Cimmerians are also taken from world history from the bronze age, they were from Black Sea in modern day Crimea... They are mentioned by other cultures histories for their invasions of modern day Turkey/ Pontice/Asia minor. they had ties to both the Greek world and the indo-Iranian Scythians of the Siberian step.

I read the Hyborian Age first and I was like wtf this is great and then I read all the short stories and fell absolutely in love with Howards world and it's characters. Hats off to you, sir! Thank you for keeping Conan's name out there. Absolutely no tv show or no movie will ever do it the proper justice. REH wrote so much good stuff, it is insane to imagine that he died at the age of 30. I am 31 and I hate every word I write down to craft my own story lol

Arguably the Vikings had there origins in today's Denmark. Most Norse cultures looked like each other before the Viking age. The Celtic people weren't a unified people, the closest it came to it they spilt into two a french and german faction. That also spread to the British isles, most prominent in Scotland and Ireland from one of the group's and the Welsh from the other.

Maaaaan. Geeeeez. D: I am going to have to write so much stuff to get all these referencer points down. I want to play around a bit in this setting, probably using Novel AI. However before I start I really feel I need to get some information about all the races, cultures and so on into the lorebook. Probably have to add all sorts of lore bits and information to get as solid a setting as possible... Not that an AI would truly follow and appreciate the setting properly anyway but hey. I do not get to buy slaves to play and run games for me so I will take what I can get. This video is truly a massive help. :3 I will probably just copy the stuff you said and hope that is enough for the AI.

Your very welcome! It can be very daunting trying to do irl comparisons to this point in history both because the cultures have changed through their representations in the comics, movies, etc and just the differences of today’s national set up. If you need any further clarification on the Brythunians, Picts or National Hyborians I did an extra video accompanying this one correcting the 3 or so errors in it and also going into what architecture would look like in the Hyborian age.

While information was mostly spot on you got Cimmerians and Picts quite wrong,according to the centenary edition of the complete chronicles page 19 specifically states Gaels were the descendants of pure Cimmerian tribes in particular highland Scots and Picts became part of the ancient kingdom of Koth. In fact I highly recommend reading the book I mentioned as it contains a plethora of information of most of the nation states and what they eventually became part of.

You showed the scout for Thulsa Doom from the 80s movie as a Pict. He is, in fact, Vanir. The movie explicitly says about the raiders/mercenaries: "Who knows what they came for? Weapons of steel or murder? It was never known, for their leader rode to the south while children went North with the Vanir."
@Langenschwerte
@Langenschwerte Жыл бұрын
The Vanir, in the movie, was the redheaded warrior who took Conan as a slave to the great mill, and then to the gladiator pits, and then finally let him go. Not the same man/actor as the scout. I believe in the director commentary they say that the scout WAS a Pict who was hired by both Thulsa Doom and his Vanir allies to lead them to the Cimmerian village, since, in Howard's works, the Picts are described as ancient enemies of the Cimmerians, engaged in centuries-long blood fueds.
@Kmkilch22
@Kmkilch22 Жыл бұрын
@@Langenschwerte Okay, yep, you are right it seems. Dunno why they would hire a Pictish scout for a Vanir raid instead of using a Vanir scout. Seems overly complicated. Also just because the Picts have an ancient blood feud doesn't mean anyone in the raid HAS to be a Pict. Seems really out of the way to portray that.
@Langenschwerte
@Langenschwerte Жыл бұрын
@@Kmkilch22 just a guess, but I think John Milius just wanted to portray as much of the Hyborian world its cultures as he could, just as a celebration of Howard's works.

There is a legend in Hyboria rarely so much as spoken of. Trifecta. Only love prevails & Hyboria too never had to learn this universal truth. It certainly did witness it epitomized. Earth, Air, Water & Fire each cultivated from the world that is Hyboria came from a storm most severe. A storm that rescued countless. A storm that never stops, goes or yields. Love.
