Quest 3 Has Now Matched Valve Index! Cheaper Apple Vision, New Apps & More!

Today, I am once again bringing you guys up to date on the latest in AR and VR news. The first thing on our list today is Quest 3 actually matching the Valve index in users on SteamVR, after this we will talk about Razers Quest 3 accessory line as well as the fact that disabling the proximity sensor might be coming back to our in-headset settings. We now also have more VR users on Steam than we have on Mac, so that's a win for VR in general, as well as more than 50% of Fortune 100 companies using the Apple Vision Pro, which is pretty crazy. Finally, we will talk briefly about the fact that the cheaper Apple Vision might be coming sooner than we originally thought, and I will tell you about a Google Earth VR app that can run natively on your Quest standalone! Considering the Quest 3 has only been out for 7 months, I think that's a big achievement. Once Alien and Batman come out, it should jump up a lot.

Yeah hopefully. I'm worried with how assassins creed nexus didnt run all that well on quest 3 and had ssw enabled all the time. Hopefully its only because the original source code was for quest 2 causing it to have limited resources when coding for quest 3. My guess is based on how much more powerful quest 3 is, quest 3 is only emulating quest 2 games like a xbox one emulated Xbox 360 games and therefore games could only be improved just a little. If thats not the case then quest 3 won't actually look much better than how games look now with the games that made quest 3 enhancements already. This is a little worry some but also exciting. Hopefully those games blow us out of the water.

@sproleinferno5675 yeah that's exactly what I'm excited about. I've played some of the Q3 enhanced games, and sometimes you can barely tell the difference. I'm excited to see what an actual Q3 game looks like. They say Quest 3 is about on par with a low end Rift capable PC. If that's the case, then it should be capable of a lot better than what we've seen so far. The June 17th Summer gaming fest can't come fast enough.

@@PrOtaku123 it runs pretty good when using quest games optimizer but ssw is always active and the game technically runs at 32 fps and ssw gives the illusion that it runs at 72 fps. If you decide to hop in the game again you will see a blur around your hands when moving them and blur around the people when they are moving. Point is that the quest 3 should be able to run the game at a native 72 fps or even 90 fps and if it can't then it is either the game is bieng emulated on quest 3 and using quest 2 source code or quest 3 is already bieng pushed to its limits with what it can run or ubisoft sucks at making vr games. Dont get me wrong im having a blast on assassins creed nexus and the game visually looks great. I just think that if asgards wrath 2 can look and run as good as it does ac nexus should run a lot better than it does.

I am still impressed how Index was on top of steam usage with that price tag for so long. But I an also impressed how Quest 3 shoots to the top in only a few months. (and yes I am aware Quest 2 is on 1. place)

You can turn the sensor off in settings. Turn off auto wake and then auto sleep is automatically disabled too. No tape required. The sensor will still work, it will just turn the screen off at the time you set it too instead of immediately.

re proximity sensor: I wish there was an option to change the delay from like instant to 30s or between 10 minutes. It would be nice for the headset to actually shut off if its idle for too long (e.g. you forgot about it) but also not instantly turn off the screens! The only annoying thing with the screens turning off is the fact that there is a bug with Steam VR that causes some games to run at 10fps if the headset disconnects (which after 10-20 seconds of being idle it does). For taking the headset off for a minute, its a big inconvenience to have to restart steam vr (and the game potentially) just cause you took the headset off

I own a valve index and unfortunately it died 2 months ago out of nowhere sent in a few support tickets and they deemed it unfixable. So I bought a quest 3. The clarity is amazing and I don’t sick using it which is just amazing

You don't have to have your headset in developer mode. I don't just to make sure it doesn't turn off. When you take your head out, I've had it set with a setting in the regular quest settings. really It's something called headset sleep timer or something like that. Possibly, I have had mine set to 10 minutes for the past almost 2 years now.

I haven't used my Valve Index since I bought a Quest 3 last December. I couldn't believe the quality of the image of the Quest 3 and how easy it was to use as a wireless PCVR headset and I have always preferred Oculus designed controllers.

Thank goodness theres a setting now. I had to tape over mine with all my headsets because my glasses would always get in the way of the sensor and it wouldnt be able to detect that im wearing it so it never lets me play unless I cover it. This is long overdue for people like me with thick glasses.

Here is a good question... What would happen if you sideload the Meta Quest Mobile App right TO Meta Quest 3? Could you set it up from there? (Probably not, since you have to set it up first before you can sideload).

Still rocking my original Quest, though I'm using a beyond for PCVR. So averaging over 2.5 million monthly VR users on Steam and getting close to 3.5 million at times.

I just received the Razer headstrap and facial interface for Quest 3. It is very comfortable and blocks light better than any facial interface I've ever tried. I'm not sure how good the strap would be for hard core stand up type gamers, but for casual gaming and viewing content it is pretty close to perfect. IMHO

Good afternoon, do you have an estimate of when this year's Meta Quest Gaming Showcase will be? It was supposed to be announced! Last year the event was announced at the beginning of May and took place on June 1st. We're already past the middle of May and still nothing. Worrisome.

I suspect the Quest 2 is still selling so well because at $199, it is cheaper than most consoles and PCs, and few adults use them, so it is a good cheaper gaming setup for kids and teens. Plus at that cost, if they drop or damage it, cost for repair or replacement is much lower than almost any other game system.

Anyone compared the quest 2 and quest 3 from a perspective of weight? I have serious neck injury. I never could use the quest 2 for more than 20 mins to an hour before it would cause serious problems with my neck due to having all that weight hanging off the front of my head. Is the quest 3 significantly better? It looks like it weighs less, and that the weight is not so far out from the face so should have less leverage to pull on your neck. Would you say it is better? slightly better? much better? barely noticeable?

I just upgraded from the index to the quest 3 recently. Overall i feel it is an upgrade, but not a massive one. The lenses and clarity are MUCH better than the index, however the index still has better audio and controllers. Luckily i can use my knuckles with the quest 3 (thanks to your tutorial!) and there is good aftermarket parts support. The wireless is also really nice, although i did have a ceiling cable setup so it was a minor improvement. (but still one none the less) The stock quest 3 needs a better strap and faceplate (stock one is garbage) to be as comfortable as the index, luckily it is cheaper, even after you put an extra $100-200 into upgrades which brings it on par with the index comfort levels. Overall it was a nice upgrade, although it didnt feel "next gen". VR prob wont feel next gen until the valve deckard comes out. (whenever that is) If only the quest 3 had brighter displays that were oled and eye tracking. Oh well, maybe the quest 4....

Quest 3 is the SH*T!!! Had a Q2 for years and sort of burned out with it, got tired of the screen door affect and graphics not quite good enough to get me immersed, but mannnn this Q3 with the games optimizer is something else... So so so impressed already by the Q3 and they haven't even really started making many games developed specifically for it yet.

Yeah totally quest games optimizer makes games in standalone look as clear as pcvr but the texture resolution on objects suffer a little. Still the more I play in stand alone the more I prefer it from my pc which has a 13900ks processor and a 4090 gpu lol kinda nuts when the thing is 500 dollars compared to my 3500 dollar pc

I have a ryzen 9, 32gb ram with rtx 4060 and IMO games look nearly as good now running straight from the quest as they do pc, and any minor graphics difference is made up for by the fact they run so smooth right from the quest. I'm curious, with my pc rig, I just cannot get pcvr to run as low latency as I get direct. Even if turning settings down, just to see if maybe it's my card not being quite good enough etc but nope, I still just can't ever get pcvr to be as buttery smooth as direct with QGO. Do you notice that with the 4090 as well or no? I've been wondering if it's just as good as it'll get with having to connect two machines together, or if it's my gfx card. I play mostly first person shooter games online btw, so low latency is a MUST.

@@CornPopWazABadDude its hard to explain feelings over a text lol but I have a 3080ti ryzen 9 5900x also that I played vr on first and id say the latency really just depends on what you are using to connect to your pc for example virtual desktop air link or steam link and then it depends on how high your settings are. I also do notice more latency when using pcvr. It seems its a trade off more latency for better visuals. If you are using a wireless way to connect to your pc the best things you can do is make sure pc is direct connected to router, have a dedicated router that is set to ap mode (access point, you need 2 routers connected to do this) and make sure your router that you are connecting to has atleast 1200mbs bit rate capability. I currently have a wifi 6e router that allows 2400mbps and id really recommend getting one that supports 2400mbps. Even after all this depending on how demanding the game is on your pc, depends on how bad the latency is. Side note when using wireless to pcvr you may want to make sure that nothing is downloading or anything using the internet to stream and such is on when connecting as it pre sets a limited amount of bitrate and it won't change if your connection is bieng dragged down by something else in your house resulting in laggy and picture warping experiences

@@CornPopWazABadDude also quest link has the least latency out of all the ways to wireless connect and while if you max the resolution multiplier in quest link app on pc it looks good there is a bit of a noticeable difference in clarity when using virtual desktop so once again its a trade off for visuals or better latency in this regard.

Does air link just use lower settings in order to show lower latency?) Quest 2 is above both the index and quest 3 it was at almost 40%, it's just the quest 3 released like 7 months ago that caught up to the index and is about to be the second most used on steam. And both quest 2 and 3 are actually primarly stand alone headsets, this chart is just the percentage of headsets used on pc vr, meaning that the stand alone headsets have actually taken over pc vr too, index stands no chance against meta.

I wish steam would add open xr info like finger tracking since so many users are quest users who have it instead of their boring knuckle controllers that have no splay. Emulating vive is not good enough. Vrchat would be way better with pcvr and hand tracking

Just letting you know I’m a MacBook Pro gamer. I’m saving up for a gaming laptop with a 5000 series in it. My MacBook Pro is very good at the games I use. It has an M2 Max and plays American truck simulator and the sims 4 on ultra settings with 40-90 fps. My only fucking problem with it is I can’t use Microsoft flight simulator natively

Not being able to deactivate the proximity sensor because of LCD screen retention? Do you think Meta engineers ever heard something about the high technology called screensavers. Doesn't matter if you actually show a screensaver animation or just a black screen, the only thing that maters is that it only gets triggered after a timeout instead of instantly. You also wouldn't even need a proximity sensor. You don't get LCD screen retention from nobody looking at the screen, you get it from the screen showing the same image for a long time. The image changes when the headset moves, not guaranteed when somebody is wearing the headset. To detect movement, you just need accelerometers, which already have to be in the headsets anyway and don't add cost. Just think about what happens to the LCDs in the headset when you lay it down on an moving object and what when you fall asleep while wearing it (use apps while laying down mode?). In the first situation, with a proximity sensor, the screens would turn off even though they don't need to and in the second situation it's the other way around.

Earth quest isn’t free, and DOES not use a free google API. When you BUY the app it says it has a public key but it doesn’t work and map fails to load at all. There’s instructions in the app on how to sign up for a free trial api key but you’ll need to enter your credit card info to proceed with that.
