Bravo! Well done. Great story expertly narrated. The way he changed the cadence of his voice for the difference characters was just right, not overdone. This is the longest story I have ever heard narrated on youtube and although there were a lot of names to learn the writer did a good job of reminding you who they were by adding little descriptions or contexts when mentioning names so it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. And in the last part the payoff was really really good, although it slipped into fantasy. Thanks!

Not being critical of it, but the author is gay right? The interaction between john pride and "the younger man" is very, yet subtly homoerotic.

No, he was straight. Married, helped found the SCA. It was said that you could follow his movements through an SCA encampment by the squeals of the women whose bottoms he'd been pinching.

Totally homoerotic - but that doesn't mean he identified as gay. Plus, most gay men have more regard for women. The book would be an excellent example of stereotypical imagery in a women's literature class. He has every negative image on the list here. His wife Vicki Ann Heydron would be an interesting comparison. He got the credit while she did a lot of the work. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicki_Ann_Heydron

what is it about this SF writers that they have to have the main male of female character "fall in love" with the first opposite sex character they meet? these writers are worst than those women novels. "of i love you since the first time i see you" crap. and their characters are ALWAYS very attractive. The "SF" for this writers mean sexual fantasy and NOT SCIENCE FICTION

I agree. Sometimes if I just ignore it I'm able to enjoy it if it's an otherwise enjoyable book. But I still think it's annoying and I'm pretty sure that many authors of 30s - 60s sci fi just added the romance because they felt it was necessary to make it marketable.

Most of the writers knew it was corny as hell but unfortunately were at the mercy of the editors who were at the mercy of magazine sales which was driven by what people wanted. Magazines to survive had to attract the mainstream audience and that meant inserting corny crap. Some writers had a reputation or developed a reputation over the years and could escape this aspect of story writing.
