I detest the look of the C-208 for some reason and the Quest Kodiak looks close enough that I have ignored it for some time. A buddy bought it after getting some free time in a actual Kodiak training sim. After flying that for an hour I was hooked. I bought it as well. We have done shared cockpit flights, crazy short field trips, etc... Love the model. Thranda hit it out of the park! The glass cockpit in VR irritates me but I have work arounds that work well enough that I can enjoy my flights in it. Haven't used the twin Otter in months since getting the Kodiak. So glad to have you back Q8!!

This aircraft isn't hard on FPS, it's the synthetic vision that eats quite a bit up. I lose around 4 FPS on my system.

Thanks for yet another great video review. On the sideline, I noted that you also have the same issue as myself regarding flickering clouds shadows on the ground. It gives me some comfort that an expert like you has not solved this. I have been trying to solve it for a year, short of using a dataref change to remove the shadows altogether, I have no success. Thanks, anyway for coming back to KZbin and for the greatly enjoyable and helpful content you provide.

Thank you for sharing your experience. The flickering shadows is something I started seeing only after upgrading to the latest version of XP. I am not sure that we can solve it, I think it is something to do with the shaders that perhaps LM needs to have a look at.

The synthetic view option does not seem a syntethic view it looks like a front camera, it would have to make a flight between mountains to see if it warns the terrain alerts.

You are correct yes, it is real vision rather than synthetic vision, but it is cool I must say!

I love flying this plane. It has a great feel. But on landing, I think it needs some work. It should be easy to put down with a 5 degree nose up in the flare between 60-70 knots. This one tends to want to float down to the low 50s. REP doesn't fix that and, in fact, makes it somewhat worse and REP's power settings are off as well...the Thranda FDE is closer. I do think they'll get it worked out. Thranda's FDE's, in my experience, are some of the best in X-Plane. It also should save your PFD preferences (wind display, zoom level). Having said that, I love flying it. You can do a lot of exploring in a plane like this.

with "synthetic vision" ON, which is a camera really, in average you lose 4-5 fps. Great review and good aircraft. The REP package however doesn't add much when it comes to engine performance...

Don't know what year model Kodiak this is but the one I flew on in Alaska was fairly high torque. It may have been because of his prop which was not standard. It had a tendency to bank slightly left so the pilot had to set his rudder to compensate on take-off and ailerons in flight. Didn't see this review earlier...another winner!

If you look at real-life pictures of G1000 synthetic vision, the simulation of it in this aircraft is actually completely wrong, this aircraft basically just shows what you can see, it does not show a real synthetic vision type of map, real synthetic vision does not show the house and roads etc, it just shows terrain and water etc.

Yes that is true, it looks nice but isn't completely simulated correctly, I suppose the Synthetic Vision could be compared to a Carenado aircraft in that respect 😛

Great to watch your updated review for the Quest Kodiak. I noticed the interior shadowing is very jagged and not smooth/realistic which needs fixing. I just purchased this aircraft to add in my X-plane 11 hanger. Thanks!

Wow - looking for the Caravan ... Not Carenado... Interesting, alternative to the Caravan (cessna 208b). My big question when buying 3rd party is do the Instruments move to alternate monitors. My Carenado TBM 850 does not allow for this ... I saw you popped out the screen but not sure it will move to alternate monitor as all Xplane aircraft allow. Also I am used to seeing Sythetic option on all my Garmin stuff, but noticed recently some did not have and could not find the option ? interesting. Always fun to watch sir. Fresno is huge airport ! wow I usually drive.

Hey I learned about a new aircraft from this review. Thanks for sharing. Question though... How would you rate the Magknight 787 Aviator Edition? I am interested in that aircraft in the xplane store but don't think it is worth the asking price. The 3d modeling... especially in the cockpit... does not look high definition at all.

Another great review in the books! If we were to split heirs though there are a few things that IMO need more work. The cabin textures are OK but not great. The power pedestal also needs some work as it looks a bit more cartoonish (in lack of a better term) compared to other textures in the cockpit. Also, not sure if it is the plane or the scenery but the chocks seem to be floating a bit. These are all very minor details to an otherwise great plane. Most importantly, with the REP the immersion is there.

Is that synthetic vision not incredibly over done though? I've nos seen a real-world example of it where it shows ground textures like at 16:21 (and throughout the flight). Its usually just yellow land, blue water, grey runway. Anyone have a good example?

I love this plane but I replaced the CPD for the GTN750 because I am not a G1000 fan (unless it is the Aerobask version) At first glance it is not so spectaculair but it is very beautiful and detailed. For me it is things like the pop up menu with the fantastic way to paint your airplane on the fly and most important, how it flies and sounds. Park it in Alaska in a thunderstorm and enjoy the sound of the rain on the roof. In realistic mode you need to be very careful with the powerlever.

Thanks for video. However the synthetic vision that is being marvelled in this video is totally un-realistic. As has been mentioned already it’s no more than another camera view. I’d be interested to know if the view on the PFD remains clear if you dial up some IMC Even if it does it’s still not even representative of what you would see on a real G1000. I think if you are going to do SV then do it properly or don’t do it at all. It spoils an otherwise nice aircraft IMHO.

Operating from an enormous paved runway in the middle of flat terrain, you completely miss the point of the Kodiak. Every detail of this plane is designed for short field, dirt strips, mountains, rivers, and any other kind of wilderness. It’s wasted in the big city.
