Living in Ghana is an incredible experience for a number of reasons, including the friendly people, the warm climate, and the laid-back culture, not to mention the relatively high remuneration for skilled workers. As an American expatriate living in Ghana though, what exactly do you need to know regarding filing US ex-pat (and Ghanaian) taxes? All US citizens and green card holders who earn a minimum of around $10,000 (or just $400 for self-employed individuals) anywhere in the world are required to file a US federal tax return and pay taxes to the IRS, regardless of where in the world they live or their income is generated. The good news is if you are paying income tax in Ghana, there are various exclusions and exemptions available to prevent you from paying tax on the same income to the IRS too. US taxes - what you need to know If you earn over US$10,000 (or just $400 of self-employment income), wherever the income originates in the world you have to file IRS form 1040. While any US taxes due are still due by April 15th, ex-pats get an automatic filing extension until June 15th, which can be extended further on request until October 15th. If you have overseas assets worth over US$200,000 per person, excluding your home if it is owned in your own name, you also have to file form 8938 to declare them. If you had a total of at least US$10,000 in one or more foreign bank and/or investment accounts at any time during the tax year, you also have to file FinCEN form 114, otherwise known as a Foreign Bank Account Report or FBAR. “Ghana taxes its resident individuals on income from any employment, business, or investment, whether or not the source from which the income is derived has ceased. The foreign-sourced income of residents is also taxable.” - PricewaterhouseCoopers If you pay income tax in Ghana, there are several exemptions that allow you to pay less or no US income tax on the same income to the IRS. The main exclusions are the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, which lets you exclude the first around US$100,000 of foreign earned income from US tax if you can prove that you are a Ghanaian resident, and the Foreign Tax Credit, which gives you a $1 tax credit for every dollar of tax you’ve paid in Ghana. These exemptions can be combined if necessary. Remember though that even if you don’t owe any tax to the IRS if your income is over US$10,000 (or $400 if you’re self-employed) you still have to file a federal return. The US and Ghanaian governments share taxpayer info, and Ghanaian banks pass on US account holders’ account info to the IRS, so it’s not worth not filing or omitting anything on your return. The penalties for incorrect or incomplete filing for ex-pats are steep, to say the least. If you’re a US citizen, green card holder, or US/Ghanaian dual citizen, and you have been living in Ghana but you didn’t know you had to file a US tax return, don’t worry: there’s a program called the IRS Streamlined Procedure that allows you to catch up on your filing without paying any penalties. Don’t delay though, in case the IRS comes to you first. Ghanaian taxes - what you need to know Ghanaian residents are taxed on their worldwide income on a scale from 0 to 30%. Non-residents are taxed a flat 20% of their Ghanaian sourced income. Foreigners living in Ghana are considered a resident for tax purposes if they spend at least 183 days in Ghana in any 12 month period that coincides with the tax year. The Ghanaian tax year is the same as the US, which is to say the calendar year. If you’re employed by a Ghanaian firm, they will deduct tax at the source before paying you. Tax returns are due by 31st March. The Ghanaian tax authority is called the Ghana Revenue Authority. We strongly recommend that if you have any doubts or questions about your tax situation as a US ex-pat living in Ghana that you contact a US ex-pat tax specialist. Get Started Now

@michael b. -Really great information, you sound like an tax expert and thanks for the comment 😊!
@michaelb.34384 жыл бұрын
@@ExpatLifeGhana No tax expert but need to be careful If you are an American living abroad, this means that as a US citizen, you must file a US federal tax return and pay US taxes no matter where you live at that time. In other words, you are subject to the same rules regarding income taxation as people living stateside.

If you carry gun on you, you could be mistaken for a criminal and possibly be lynch. So people coming to live in Ghana should be very careful about this. In Ghana the security agencies, rich people if they asked for guns are allowed to own guns. Random people are NOT allowed to own gun. In the villages farmers and hunters are also allowed to own less powerful guns.

You have to bargain y'all. The trick is to divide whatever price into 2 then keep adding little bit on top till you are happy with what you want to pay or till they cave. By the way great video session. 👌

Growing up in Ghana in the 70s and 80s we didn't have bars on the windows however there were incidences of robbers coming into your homes so that begun the use of bars. Sometimes, it also depends of where you live. Most homes in Accra will have barred windows however not all homes in Cape Coast for example have them.

Bers on windows is common throughout the world except in 🇺🇸 depending on the areas. I've seen them here in Houston.

Bars on the windows aren't uncommon in 🇺🇸
@solentricxinc.99444 жыл бұрын
@@sarrahc1338 never said that. There aren't as common, though. Have been Living here in 4 different states for over 40 years and have only seen them in certain areas unlike the caribbean, where I'm from, practically every household has them. Even apartments have them there.

l live in UK...prices vary from shop to shop. something bought from Waitrose price tag is totally different from Mark and spencer's. l don't use the word SCAM because of different price tag!
