When you marry a US citizen, you can apply for US citizenship after 3 years of marriage. Marriage reduces the period for obtaining citizenship from 5 years in normal cases to 3 years. But in the case of divorce after obtaining a green card by marrying an American, the principle changes. A person does not obtain citizenship in America by mere marriage, but after 3 years of marriage, provided that the marriage continues for 3 years. Thus, the damages of divorce after obtaining a green card by marrying an American do not appear on the residence card, but appear on the American passport. Conditional green residency for two years When you marry a US citizen, you will get a conditional green card for two years only. And after the end of the two years, you can get a permanent green card, which later qualifies you for citizenship
