For the next story that we will do as a class, I know I am going to use and need the words mayor, menor and mejor. I want to preload students with those words to a point that they feel very comfortable with them. By having this engaging conversation with my students, I am helping them build robust representations of those words in their heads. So, when they encounter them in the story, they will be already familiar with these new words.
Even though I encourage them answering back in Spanish, I don´t want to stop an engaging conversation from happening. With my first year Spanish students I allow them to cross talk: I am always in the TL, providing them with lots of comprehensible input, and they can answer back in Spanish or English. What matters at this level is that they are understanding the message in the TL. If I make them answer back in Spanish, this would be forced output. But since they can answer back to me in any way they feel comfortable with, if it is Spanish what comes out of their mouths, I know this is not forced. They will start transitioning to using more Spanish naturally.
