I used my laser to cut the holes out of 1/2” Baltic birch and added some bracing underneath. Piping the dust out of my shop through a 10” duct with a big in line fan. This is the greatest thing I’ve added to my laser shop for finishing.

I did mine with 3/4" holes and a direct 4" suction line to my dust collector with a Y Connector for the back of the sander as well. Well, that was version 3 and now it's flawless. I also use 1" Stop Blocks with 3/4" shafts to secure my material. Each hole is a stop block potential placement. Good video.

Interesting, I like your design and the table integration. I just figured out I need one of these for my rotary tool, so I'm looking at designs. Given all the drilling time, I'm wondering if it isn't easier to just take your pegboard, cut it into multiple (slightly oversized) pieces and then glue enough of them together to make it the thickness and thus stiffness you wanted? Use some 1/4" or 6mm pins to keep all the holes aligned, glue and clamp and then cut to final size. Especially since you already had the material.

I always love your builds because you come back to them over time and give us updates on how they worked and what improvements you've made (e.g. smokeless fire pit). Would you change the hole sizes if you did it again?
@rotorhawg80522 ай бұрын
A nice addition might be to have the whole box sitting the width of a piece of plywood low, so that when you are sanding it would create a border for the piece to remain within. But more so, when done sanding you could drop a piece of plywood on top of it, that would sit flush with your bench top and be prevent hardware and such falling through the holes. Just and idea.
@davidgiesfeldt6650 Жыл бұрын
I like the plan! SUGGESTION… use the peg board as a guide for drilling larger holes with greater but consistent spacing. These can double for bench dog/hold downs/jigs and down draft. With the 1/4in center drill bit on an appropriately sized hole saw, you can quickly layout a grid… using two layers of material (your choice) or even scrap LVL you can find in a job site dumpster you get a solid top that does both work and dust abatement!
@jewdd1989 Жыл бұрын
Recently I noticed Home Depot sells a thicker plastic peg board version and I’m very tempted to use it instead of hand drilling a ton of holes. I’m wanting to build a dust collection cart for my new Cen Tec dust collection system (far cheaper and better snap click system than Rockler’s and it’s on Amazon) but I’m considering on building a sanding station small enough to maneuver around the garage for collecting dust but also functions for sanding purposes. Anyways go to the front of the store where they have cheap organization alternatives and you should find this plastic peg board. It seems to want to be a knock off version of the more expensive metal peg board systems
@contessa.adella9 ай бұрын
I should think before you start talking about the size of suction plate you want…you need to discuss the dust collector capability and relate it to that, especially if others are looking to this for guidance. 10/10 for collection effectiveness in the end. 👍

That’s a great idea! I would have centered the intake hole for the vac and perhaps used a variety of sized holes and spacing in a circular pattern to get a more consistent suction all across the board. I’d imagine the way you have it set up sucks great by the intake port and maybe not so well by some of the far edges
@kbguy96544 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing with hole size and port placement... but good idea with make a circular pattern 🤔
@HAXMAN4 жыл бұрын
I agree Mario. That was my original intent. The main reason I put in at the end was so I didn't eat into my storage space underneath. I've never seen it done with the circular pattern but I might do that if I redo it. Thanks for the feedback!
@jacobellis81354 жыл бұрын
@@HAXMAN i thought the reason for the ramp was to create more of a suction the further away from the vacuum. I've seen the exact same principle used in heating and air ventilation. The further away the vent is, the smaller the diameter of the supply pipe.
@HAXMAN4 жыл бұрын
@@jacobellis8135 It is. It's just that if the port was in the middle and there was two short ramps instead of one long one the suction would probably be even stronger.

Great video. Personally I think I would have made smaller holes like 3/4" to increase suction. Also if you put some scraps over some of the open holes it will increase the suction. Possibly enough that it will hold your work piece to the table so you don't have to hold it with your hand. Maybe some bench cookies that pop in the holes with some rubber tops will solve that. Looking forward to some more videos.

To prevent tearing and blowout when using hole saws go halfway on the first side and flip peice and go the rest of the way thru. That way any tearout is in the middle of the hole.
@HAXMAN3 жыл бұрын
Normally I would do that. That also makes it easier to remove the plug from the saw. In this case, I used a sacrificial piece of plywood behind the hole to prevent tearout. I just didn't want to flip back and forth a hundred times. 😄 Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching!
