I’m so glad you said what you did about the natural light shooters. I hear so many excuses about not using OCF. The chief on being, “ I don’t want to have to carry all that extra gear!!” It’s minimal as you showed unless you’re bringing strobes out. Too much reliance on presets to fix. Natural light is beautiful when used right. And hey, well balanced OCF looks natural and the added contrast is so much nicer!!

I have found that the ones who object to OCF are either scared to death of it or too lazy to learn. So I ask them how they would like to double their income in less than 6 months and then they don’t know what to say. Sal, thanks for the video. Longtime shooter but I always pick up a few tips from you.

Dude, thank you for this. I watch a whole lot of youtube videos and many 'influencers' make the horrible mistakes at long introductions, over-explaining, not considering their audience, and trying too hard to be funny or interesting. You get right to the point(s) and give great, relevant, and usable information. I'm subscribing right now. KUDOS

I had not bought a Godox V1 yet, so I am thinking this Westscott FJ80 is a better flash for all the reasons you gave and consistent color being the best. Thanks for a great lesson with off camera flash outdoors!

Glad I could help! and yes - having worked with A LOT of different units... and then getting into post production and seeing a noticable color shft... it can be a giant PIA to get everything to look the same. Some people dont care as much... but i am a fan of this new FJ80-V2. Much better built than the V1.

Take it up a notch. If you've got an assistant, or even if you don't, throw that flash into a portable soft box or umbrella to get rid of the harsh shadows on the subject.

Thank you Sal Cincotta! How do you trigger your flash when it's off camera? I have a remote trigger for activating my camera shutter, but I don't know how to trigger a flash remotely. Is it the same technology?
@SalCincotta1
@SalCincotta1 7 ай бұрын
ty ty! yes - you would have a trigger for the flash on camera - sits in the hot shoe. if you notice in the video - i have one sitting on camera - its usually the same manufacturer as the lighting company.

Sal, thank you again for another spot on the tutorial. In your professional experience is it better to use Aperture priority when shooting outdoors where the elements may change quickly (i.e. sun/shade) or Manual mode. You getting dialed in quickly was transforming!
@SalCincotta1
@SalCincotta1 7 ай бұрын
you are very welcome! and the answer is YES. AP moves MUCH MUCH FASTER and in my opinion is more accurate than manual mode in outdoor conditions. studio? 100% manual mode.

This is one of the videos i have seen. One question you talked about temperature. Is it the temperature in camera or on your flash? i got a little confused here?
@SalCincotta1
@SalCincotta1 5 ай бұрын
correct... temperature is controlled at the camera however, you are adjusting the camera to match the actual light being used. are we using sunlight, continuous light, or flourecent or tungsten? all have a different color temperature they are emitting. if you are using flash and the temerture of that flash changes with every shot fired... creates inconsistent images and more editing to get them to all look the same. does that make more sense?

As someone who shoots high volume events and currently uses the EL-1 due to built in fan and amazing metering...how many flashes can you get out of the FJ80II before it slows down for overheating or does it also have a built in fan? I shoot graduations that can be over 100 people in short order so need something that can keep firing.
@SalCincotta1
@SalCincotta1 7 ай бұрын
i cant honestly speak to that... i dont believe it has a fan, but i work in 100+ degree temps on weddings and senior shoots and i have not personally run into over-heating issues. but shit... sounds like you are pushing the limits of a lot of units!! :)

I did an event shoot last week and realized that when I started editing the following day that despite having the same white balance and being taken at the same settings all around, most if not all of my second and third flash images were either warmer or cooler than the first one.

BINGO!!! Im sorry this happened to you, but im happy to see this post. a lot of times when i talk about this - people scoff at what im saying and just want to keep touting a certain brand because its cheaper... great... so you saved some money on a cheap brand... but now you are spending tens of hours jerking around in lightroom to get color to match up. and in a scenario that you are talking about - those images MUST LOOK THE SAME! Hope this little tidbit helps you!! Sal

I use TTL settings to cheat. Once I get the settings, when I get the light to what I like. Then use the hold button to switch to manual mode. I have the original FJ80. Can’t wait for it to “break” so I can get the II.

Why is she wearing that dress in the woods? Other than that, it was a fun video, and I learned something about pointing the light at the nose. Does that flash screw onto a stand and adjust? An assistant isn’t always available!
@SalCincotta1

i mean... surely the dress comment is a rhetorical one, right? as for the light - yes, almost all flashes come with a cold shoe mount with a screw adapter underneath it for light stands.
