Quick Cheap Diy Welding Rocker Panel Sill Repair On Beetle For Car Test At Home

My 2003 Volkwagen Beetle has rust root on the under side of the sills / rocker panels.
Had to do a quick fast repair as car is due its yearly inspection, so im hobby man an so i thought i have a go repairing this car myself
Now is a simple overlay path as its my car for going to work, car would realy need a new sill but wanted to keep cost down an to be honest i havn't the time to do a full replacement.

Cool ,even the camera got a welding mask. Got the same probs on my caddy pick up, needed reassurance i was going about it the right way. this is how i shall tackle it. thanks for posting the vid.

Just take you time, doesn't need to be factory looking perfect as long as it's solid.

@@TheProjectGuy194 I learnt to make cardboard templates for patches but i've never seen seen the tinfoil technique to get the profile which I think is genius , really helped me out on this one. thanks again

Mine gone in same place. Used to do these in my sleep but I can’t get down any more. Gonna have to pay. By the way Never weld a car on your own. Always have a spotter to watch out for fire.

Keep fire extinguisher handy an if its petrol or gas motor I drain the day before. Your also right in saying it's good to have someone around.

AV got the same problem,did you disconnect the battery? If so was there any issues when reconnecting.

Always disconnect battery when welding. No problems doing this on the Beetle, had another beetle with the whole dash out for a heater matrix for 8 day an radio came back on as normal after rebuild.

col fuller yes car passed Mot.. It was a rush job an car passed first time. Now it's not just a year yet an paint work wasn't good on repair an pealing off. Had use weld through primer on all of the repair an it didn't stick, so am planing to clean the repaired area an repainting for next MOT.

rkan2 well im hoping for a year or 2. patch may last a lot longer but car will rust in other places under neath.

Doesn't it make you wonder, if manufacturers KNOW these are a problem area, then FFS WHY NOT address the issue?
