So how would i be able to bypass my goodman unit to not go on defrost anymore. I live in phx arizona

Heat strips are not allowed in CA? Whoa. I live in central Texas, right in the middle of the ice apocalypse a few months ago. My heat pump condenser fan blade froze up with ice at one point. Without the heat strips I would have been doa. Defrost cycle ran normally, but it was so cold it couldn’t melt the ice fast enough. Even in 20-30-ish degrees, like a normal Texas cold snap, it still needs to defrost about once an hour. No heat strips seems insane for freak weather events. Also during a normal cold day in December my capacitor went out, compressor would not start. Heat strips saved the day until my new cap arrived a few days later. No heat strips as emergency heat on a heat pump seems flippin criminal.

They are not energy efficient. That’s why that outlawed them. Plus it doesn’t get that cold in SoCal. Coldest it ever got in SoCal was 37 degrees in the late night.

Hi Thanks for the tutorial but is it necessary to Jump out defrost pins on board 1 st ? or can one just move the defrost pin to test ? or short out speed up & force defrost , - thereby cking defrost senser @ same time ? just wondering Thanks for any all help

You want to jump the defrost thermostat first then short test.

I Have a Goodman heat pump, less than 4 yrs old. Installed with my new home. Unit failed after 2 years. Installer said coolant was overcharged (600+ psi). Replaced compressor $1200 under warranty (part and labor). Unit failed again after that, blower motor was burned out. I paid $300+ to replace that. This past June unit failed again. $456 to replace capacitor. Unit failed again today blows warm air as usual, compressor and fan are running. No problem whatsoever during heating season only during cooling season. Needless to say I am not impressed with this Goodman heat pump which has cost thousands to repair and less than 4 years old. LEMON!!! Any suggestions?

I'm sorry to see you're having so many issues with your AC unit. High pressure will kill a compressor. Especially if it's running for a long time. I'm surprised the high pressure switch didn't cut off your unit. Usually when this occurs the outdoor unit will cycle on and off and will not cool. The fact that your unit was overcharged is definitely a mistake by the installer or tech. The failed blower motor can be caused by dirty filters, under sized return grill/ducts, some type of airflow restriction, or an out of specification capacitor. If the replacement compressor was not installed properly you might have another compressor failure in the future. Unfortunately sometimes you can get a lemon. That goes for all brands. It might be a good idea to try to find another company to take a look at the unit to get another set of eyes on it. I wish you luck and hopefully no more issues.

Actually I’ve had 4 companies work on this unit. Most recent was a routine maintenance 3 days ago and they said everything checked out fine. I’m living in a desert climate for 35 years and in recent years the 100+ degree heat waves have been brutal, lasting 6 to 8 weeks during the summer months.

You might try one of those condenser misters. Especially on the hotter days. It will reduce your head pressure lowering the load on the compressor. It looks like a joke when you see it, but in extreme heat it can be effective.

Technician came back today and diagnosed the problem as stuck reversing valve. Said replacing that should fix the issue.

I have the a Goodman that is blowing the 3amp fuse. I traced it to the defrost board (red wire). I replaced the board, it ran for a few days but blew the fuse again. Any suggestions. FYI. I didnt see a short in the wiring but may switch to another wire for troubleshooting purposed. Thank for the great video!!!

Hi! This is very helpful; thank you for sharing! My unit every winter season freezes and I have to turn it off to allow melt but I guess is not in defrost cycle. Can I do it by myself or definitely need to hire a professional?

I tried the same process on my unit and when I remove the test pin jumper, it goes right back into heat mode. It does not stay in defrost mode. Maybe my board is bad?

You could try leaving the pin on test or try it without jumping the defrost thermostat. It’s weird. Some you have to leave the pin on some you have to remove it.

That’s such a bizarre thing in CA. I would imagine the power consumption of a 5kw or even a 10kw in defrost mode would be far lower than having to cool down the space and having to reheat it again after defrost. Not to mention the comfort issue

They figured gas fired furnaces were more efficient. Oh wait now they’re banning gas fired furnaces by 2028. Heat pumps with no aux heat are cleaner and more efficient. Lol.

Thanks a lot! Maybe next time I’ll watch the entire video before trying to continue. Spent 10 minutes trying to get it to start by pulling fan power and putting flathead in between test. Looked you up, saw that you actually moved the time selector, tried that for 10 minutes. Finally coming back to actually watch the whole thing trying to figure out why I can’t get it to switch, figuring out a sensor was stopping me 🤦‍♂️

Horrible! 😁😁😁 Nah man, you did a good job. That version of the defrost board is much better than some of the older designs where the defrost setting pins were on the top right hand side, and much harder to get to. And the two fan wires were located on the left side of the board, right there for the door panel to fall into them and short to ground when you're taking it off.

Yeah. Not even for auxiliary heat. Yet they want to get rid of gas fired furnaces all together. I haven’t seen any dual fuel in California personally. I’m sure they’re out there.

My thermistor is tripped and kicks the defrost on but only lasts for a minute. If I jump the board it will run about 10 minutes. Why is this? Bad thermistor?

It could be the defrost thermistor or the defrost board. I’d start with the thermistor.

Thanks for the fast reply. The lower third of my heat pump has about 4” of ice on the outside and inside. I don’t think the defrost has been running for the whole duration causing this buildup here in Northern Idaho. Would it be a bad idea to leave the board jumped until I get a new thermistor? It will be under 40 degrees for a while.

If you do that It may just go into defrost constantly. I’d just run your heat in emergency mode till you can make your repair. Or set the timer as long as possible. Good luck!

Putting a goodman into defrost damages the operation. So does taking the door off. Touching one can cause issues. I once looked at one and it broke down. Legend has it that leaving them alone and never changing the filter makes a goodman last longer😆🤣
