Updated version which is less sticky: • Donut Espresso Shakr f...
Finished product: ko-fi.com/dubi...
I like to try out all kinds of espresso tools. I never fully considered the blind shaker from Weber Workshops until the Lance Hedrick video.
So I created this experimental version specially thought for 3D printing (chamfers instead of roundings, 2mm thick walls)
- and especially to strengthen the donut extraction.
Why would you want a donut extraction? In Stéphan Ribes paper "Radial uniformity of espresso extractions" from 2020, he found that even with a donut extraction, the sides of the espresso puck are under-extracted. Also nicely illustrated here again by Lance Hedrick.
I can hardly test whether my shaker really improves this or not without the appropriate equipment, but if you can, please do so and report back.
So, see as an experiment currently where you can take part in. I've managed to get some great shots with it so far. Note: With use, I had to change the grinder settings for my recipes
There is also a subreddit specifically for 3D printed coffee tools where test results of this tool will be discussed in the future (and also on this channel). We are happy about everyone interested and about like-minded people who would also like to share their experiences!: / 3dprintingcoffee

After use, I put all the parts together again, put them back on the scale and waited 10 seconds. Then, I read the value. After, I used a brush to spread everything into a dosing cup and weighed it again. Here is the result for PLA-Metal like, 0.12 mm layer height and 19g beans: *Clean container: 65.2g, container after use: 65.3g*, coffee residue "0g" (according to the manufacturer, the scale starts at 0.1g, but that doesn't seem to have worked here). I also thought the result must be more but I think the blue color is very unflattering.

This looks like a very good entry into the magic shaker world without having to pay ridiculous amounts for the pleasure of playing with another interesting coffee gadget. Thanks for doing all the work involved in this:-)

looks great. in find with the narrow baskets of the flairs (outside the 58) will generally produce donut extractions. I also find these to be reduced when the basket holes provide more surface area at the bottom of the basket. You can see on the flair baskets that the holes stop a few mm short of the sides.

Thanks! Yes Flair generally seems to do a good job with the portafilters they supply. Next week I will measure the radial extraction yield for the Pro 2. I may also have the opportunity to measure the Flair 58, but that is still up in the air.

Nicely done and timed - after all the recent hype I got my calipers out and sized up for lids on my Weber Grinder 90 mins including some measurement and printing - bingo! - looks like you opted for fuzzy on the outside? Anyway all in I see maybe a tiny difference in my shots given it’s raked shaken and stirred (pun time! With a 3dprinted Moonraker 007 time indeed) and ocd’d prior to tamp - if you’ve not added it a magnet in the lift out distribution arm will help keep it all located depending on grinder

Thanks! Yeah I used fuzzy skin on this one to hide the Z-seam. All my print settings you can find on the Printables page: www.printables.com/de/model/752021-donut-espresso-shaker-58mm-54mm-51mm-flair-pro-2-4 Nice pun :D. It sits firmly on the portafilters due to the donut design and it sits firmly on my grinder, but maybe not on others. I've never seen magnets on a portafilter holder or what exactly did you mean, sorry I am not a native english speaker. What tool or lid exactly did you design for your weber, I am curious :D. I just started a subreddit about 3D printed coffee stuff to not spam other subreddits with it if you wanna join it. @@dubios42 he's probably talking about how some grinders come with a dosing cup (or catch cup) that has a magnet built into the base of the cup. so that when you place the cup beneath the grind chute, it magnetizes to the base of the grinder and stays in place. and I believe the Weber shaker has a magnet built into the button of the "bell ringer", so that it magnetizes when placed onto the grinder.
@dubios42
@dubios42 6 ай бұрын
Ah thank you, that makes sense. I've actually thought about it (I also have a version that fits under the Varia VS3) but decided against it because every grinder does it differently with the magnets. @davidpinnington213 If you have magnets and occasionally use them for 3D printing, you can simply make a small recess in the slicer under the bolt yourself :)

@@thepatwalsh88 Yes, I always look at it with envy at the Varia :D. So if you try the donut espresso shaker, read the "Which version should you choose?" part carefully. It's also about versions that fit better/worse in the Varia's hollow. If you manage to do this with the magnet, please feel free to share pictures :)

Does it fit the DF64 grinders? Any one tried it?
@dubios42
@dubios42 6 ай бұрын
Edit: Yes, according to my research it is the same holder as the DF64P. I have the DF64P. As you can see, it fits into this without any problems. I'm not quite sure if the DF64 has the same holder size but if a 58mm portafilter fits, it should work, otherwise you can also print the matching holder (I've seen some on printables) Otherwise there are also versions of the shaker without a holder and another one for smaller coffee grinders.

Took a minute just to get the grounds into the portafilter.....just grind into portafilter and wdt. Takes 1/5 of the time.

You can't buy this. This is an experimental 3D-printed version. It combines a dosing cup, funnel and a shaker. It's also optimized for a donut extraction, but that's the experimental part. In the future I will test if this really improves the radial extraction yield. So you see, this is a nerdy niche you've landed in :D *edit: some grammar

@@Matthew-ir1edhave you tried shaking in the dosing cup in the portafilter? I have been trying it out for the last could of weeks but it is very tricky not to end up with the grounds pilled one side. At that point it’s really tricky to get it properly distributed.
