The screwdriver example is straight forward and clear to tell the difference that was a good one to show people who dont know and we should tell these people who dont know that if anyone tries to sell em a car and says,"just needs a rod." Almost like it aint no thing, not to believe its as simple as all that. Rods, bearings, lifters, cranks, cams, head gasket without taking the head off the motor to resurface and check at a machine shop. All that shit is involved and expensive especially if you're not down to do it yourselves.

I have been cleaning up the car, doing some service work on it, and getting ready to sell. The car only has 67K miles on it, and suddenly, I have the loudest knock I have ever heard. Sitting inside with the windows up and the hood down and locked, it's so loud, like I had the windows down and the hood open. The tone is more like the sound of a rod, yet it sounds like it's coming from the topside. I haven't been underneath it yet, but it may not make much difference in determining where it's coming from because it's so loud. Damn, I need to get rid of this car like yesterday..Ugh!

My noise also goes away and isnt there after car is warmed up...I barely hear it at all...now yeah that could be exhaust leak that sealed up when everything got nice and warm but it could also be that the lifters needed time to get lubricated...

Also after the engine heats up, the oil pressure drops somewhat..., also when I first start the cooled engine, I notice a heavy blue smoke from the tail pipe, this only lasts for a few seconds and then no more smoke... It has about 160,000 miles. Thanks for any advice you have to offer.

I have a 2003 Silverado 5.3 L. It set for two months and was running fine. When I finally started it, instantly started knocking. Thought maybe it was the lifters. I removed the valve covers all the spark plugs. Turn the engine over by hand, checked each rocker arm, and they all were tight. I went to pull the dipstick out, and it was stuck. I pried it out with a prybar, and the end of the dipstick was bent and a curve almost 90° at the tip and I could see marks on it to where it had been striking something on the crankshaft. Would the dipstick actually cause a rod bearing to go bad? Also have a P0300 code.

My old toyota 7k engine still got tick tick sound even after the engine being rebuild? The mechanic replace everything from timing chain, valve, piston, piston ring, conrod bearing almost everything even servicing the hydraulic valve lifter but after everything done the tick tick sound still there? It's possible the sound come from the push rod? Or the rocker arm? Or it's possible maybe the lifter? Please help me. Thank you

Good advice!! I do have a question... Lets say I didn't hear it underneath my car, but did feel in the engine while driving higher RPM like highway and it sounded just like that rod knock but you can almost feel it coming from the engine could that be it also. What's throwing me off is that I didn't hear it while idling and I know it isn't a lifter tick. Sounded more like a rod knock only at higher speeds.
@gilbertmatty5654 Жыл бұрын
Mine sounds exactly like that but it loud enough where you can hear it without opening hood. Engine is a swap, and lifters are brand new. Spent 3,800. Already.

This is EXCELLENT advice! Thank you! I am going to get into flipping cars and I can obviously run a compression test to really make sure there is no problems with the engine but if it got a rod knock even with perfect compression that would be a deal breaker.... this video helps that....going to jack it up and then listen....I also happen to own a stethoscope cuz I bought it to listen for termites in walls so I can use that too

In your opinion and experience, how long would engine have to be running with a knock that resembles lifter tick, to become a "slam" and cause some unrepairable damage to the crankshaft? Great explanation and vid.

Depends on how you drive it,take care of it, and the strain on the engine from day to day. Could last awhile

Man I'm trying to fix my brother's 89 Nissan pulsar NX. He said it had a loud knocking noise when he cranked it 4 years ago. Turned it right off and it's been sitting every since. Without cranking it I just don't know.

Check the oil in it, Then look for burn oil or shaving in the oil. If there is sufficient oil and no shaving or excessively burn oil. Then fire it up check for oil pressure. Once everything is done go from there buddy. You will know if something is about to come apart after a few seconds of running sir

@@autoguydiy4244 man I drained the oil, it was black. The oil pan gasket was about in pieces. I put a new oil pan gasket on it took the filter the little tube that comes down off the bottom of the oil pump to get off it had a bunch of gasket pieces all over at mats are cleaned it off checked all the bolts and everything to make sure everything was still right

I got a sound on my dads race car and he has dementia now so he cant really help anymore but its only on low rpms. Give it some gas and get the rpms up and it goes awat and its at the top side of the engine. Its a 406 sbc with a 6-71 blower. I wish i knew more about cars man i wanna get it running for him

Sounds like a lifter losing pressure

Nice video. I have a straight 6 BMW. When it gets to operational temperature it kinda knocks at the oil pan. Knocking gets faster when revving. But. If i restart the engine, knocking is gone for a time, then it starts knocking again. What is even more strange is that if i let it idle for some time, i can hear some valve to operate from the enging bay, hiss huss, knocking is gone. Do you have any idea? Thank you

I'm not to sure buddy. I believe the rod knock could be a slightly worn rod bearing. The noise from top put your belt and check some pulleys. They can make terrible noise when going out

Thanks! Can a rod knock go away after the engine builds oil pressure? Or does that only happen to lifters? I have a V6 that knocks for 1 minute after it hasn't run for 8 hours. Any sooner than that and it doesn't knock.

It sound like your loosing oil pressure around the rod. There is a very thin line of oil between rod and rod bearing
