Old mechanic friend taught me many years ago to use a cut off section of old garden hose to hold up to one ear and move around. A lot cheaper than a stethoscope and works great at isolating sounds

Good video. For those curious Lisle makes a mechanic-specific stethoscope kit with two different listening rods to detect either mechanical or air/vacuum type noises. Part # is 52750 and costs a little over 20 bucks.

Hey auto guy diy love the old school methods for sure that’s literally the way I learned I just wanted to add if a guy didn’t have a stethoscope you can always take a long screwdriver and place the flathead (etc) end on the valve cover or oil pan and put your ear on the handle end it also works great to single out what pulley or tensioner has failed along with many other uses just make sure your hoodie strings necklaces etc are not going to get into moving parts such as fans belts etc thanks for your time and videos

The screwdriver example is straight forward and clear to tell the difference that was a good one to show people who dont know and we should tell these people who dont know that if anyone tries to sell em a car and says,"just needs a rod." Almost like it aint no thing, not to believe its as simple as all that. Rods, bearings, lifters, cranks, cams, head gasket without taking the head off the motor to resurface and check at a machine shop. All that shit is involved and expensive especially if you're not down to do it yourselves.

Great video. The screwdrivers perfectly represent those sounds, except I am still stumped. My mother has a 2016 Cadillac ATS 2.0 turbo. I have been cleaning up the car, doing some service work on it, and getting ready to sell. The car only has 67K miles on it, and suddenly, I have the loudest knock I have ever heard. Sitting inside with the windows up and the hood down and locked, it's so loud, like I had the windows down and the hood open. The tone is more like the sound of a rod, yet it sounds like it's coming from the topside. I haven't been underneath it yet, but it may not make much difference in determining where it's coming from because it's so loud. Damn, I need to get rid of this car like yesterday..Ugh!

Another thing is a rod knock noise would ALWAYS be there right? It would NEVER go away or get quieter? I have what I believe is either lifter tick or exhaust leak...it happens when I first start it and goes away when I rev it...I have to get my stethoscope and really try to pinpoint it but definitley sounds like from valve cover...problem is thats right next to the exhaust headers too... My noise also goes away and isnt there after car is warmed up...I barely hear it at all...now yeah that could be exhaust leak that sealed up when everything got nice and warm but it could also be that the lifters needed time to get lubricated...

I have a 2005 GMC 5.3 pickup truck. Here are the details of my issue: When I first start it in the morning, the oil pressure is fine but after the engine heats heated up and about 10 minutes of driving I hear a heavy rattle in the motor...this only happens upon any type of acceleration from a stop light or even accelerating on the highway, or street, even light acceleration. it is a content issue from that point forward, until the motor is stopped and given time for the time to cool down... Also after the engine heats up, the oil pressure drops somewhat..., also when I first start the cooled engine, I notice a heavy blue smoke from the tail pipe, this only lasts for a few seconds and then no more smoke... It has about 160,000 miles. Thanks for any advice you have to offer.

I have a lexus v6 with the infamous sludge problem. it has a "knock" that comes very apparent after the car warms up and settles down to normal rpm. It also starts to have a burnt oil smell with some smoke after it is running. You do not hear the knokc upon initial start up. is the engine toast or is there a way to flush the engine to get the caked up sludge out and start fresh with new oil?

It's alway worth a shot with an engine flush. At that point you know you gave it your best shot to save it Also check out the oil once drained look for excessive or big pieces of metal would say mmo if any for the flush.

Though the sounds/noises seem quite different. Would it be possible for me to send you a short video where I drive onto the drive way & can also make a video with the hood open and engine running if that’d be of any help? Really appreciate your comment by the way!

I have a 2003 Silverado 5.3 L. It set for two months and was running fine. When I finally started it, instantly started knocking. Thought maybe it was the lifters. I removed the valve covers all the spark plugs. Turn the engine over by hand, checked each rocker arm, and they all were tight. I went to pull the dipstick out, and it was stuck. I pried it out with a prybar, and the end of the dipstick was bent and a curve almost 90° at the tip and I could see marks on it to where it had been striking something on the crankshaft. Would the dipstick actually cause a rod bearing to go bad? Also have a P0300 code.

Good advice!! I do have a question... Lets say I didn't hear it underneath my car, but did feel in the engine while driving higher RPM like highway and it sounded just like that rod knock but you can almost feel it coming from the engine could that be it also. What's throwing me off is that I didn't hear it while idling and I know it isn't a lifter tick. Sounded more like a rod knock only at higher speeds.
