Quick Engine Check for the Non-Mechanic

You don't have to be a certified marine engine technician to do a quick check before heading out on the water. This should be a part of your pre-departure checklist, just like checking to make sure the plug is in before launching. It's just an easy way to identify obvious issues while still at the dock or on the trailer.
There's no worse feeling than having something go very wrong while out on the water because of something that would have been obvious had you checked. So look in there and check!

I'm a big fan of the CRC Spring as I buy large amounts and keep in a hand pump sprayer. I spry everything down real good when the engine stops running for the day. Before starting I have auto fuel pumps and make sure buy opening I have no GAS odors, Check oil dep stick level. Also, check that water has emptied out of the bilge area and bilge pumps working. Turn on Compartment vent fans to remove and circulate the air. I also check my radio is working and I have back up fuses and some tools should I need to work on something. Some good stuff, keep up the outstanding boater's information. A wonderful channel for new and older boats. Thanks for sharing love the informative videos.

I just experienced an overheating engine due to impeller failure. I made it back to port on the other engine but learned the importance of having at least one spare impeller on board. I also have Volvo Penta engines and the water pump is very easy to access on the lower front of the engine. I saw yours clearly in this video. However, look into a tool for pulling the impeller because they can bind to the shaft that turns them, making them tough to remove. This could be a critical DIY job to learn when operating a single engine boat. Keep up the great videos!
