Great explanation of what goes on when dealing with boat engine salt water corrosion process, but the way, those metal links you pointed out are to try and keep all sections of the drive train at the same electrical potential, so the anodes are what will be sacrificed first, as designed, but again, great job!

Outboard transom height is a major culprit of this also. A lot of people dont realize, and just set the outboard on top of transom and call it good. The cavitation plate needs to level with bottom of boat, or just higher with a v hull rear. The idea is the cavitation plate is just on top of water surface at full speed.

GREAT comment. When I made this video, I wasn't even thinking about that. Most the boats there are I/O.

Stray current can come from the boat's electrical system or not being properly bonded and also from stray current in the water at a marina (from shore power or other boats). Learn more here: abycinc.org/blogpost/1839308/339855/Is-It-Grounded-or-Bonded

would adding trim tabs work. I have a 20' jet boat with the motor rear of center as well as the weight of the jet drive. when it gets over 23mph it starts porposing real bad until I slow it down then find the sweet spot... I have some manual trim tabs for a 20' boat and thought of putting those on?!?!
@sweetvelocitybps2 жыл бұрын
Yes, adding tabs would definitely help. They're an additional tool that works well to help with good trimming. You can experiment with both to find that sweet spot for whatever the given conditions are.

your right about trimming down ,but then my boat becomes hard to steer and i don't get the benefit of less boat in the water more fuel efficient , I've even tried adjusting motor height .
@sweetvelocitybps2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you're adjusting way too much. If your porpoising, you're trimmed too high. If your plowing and steering is hard, your trimmed too low or not at all. When I trim, I use small taps instead of holding the button to make small adjustments, otherwise it over-trims one way or the other. With some boats there's a lag in trimming effect. As far as motor height, I'm assuming you mean how high the engine is bolted onto the boat? Sounds like you have an outboard? For proper height, that is an entirely different subject and good prop guy could help you determine where it should be.

I’m having the same problem. What do you mean by trim down??
@jonathanlapierre52542 жыл бұрын
Ok trim the engine down but I can’t I have a seadoo jet drive ..
@sweetvelocitybps2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonathan, for a jet boat with no trim your solution might be in how the boat is loaded. If it's back heavy, the bow will be higher and more prone to contribute to porpoising. If it's possible, shift more weight forward to better balance the load in the boat. That might mean moving people, gear or both.

Never had a problem with that and have towed over potholes and crazy dirt roads in the north country with some nasty dips. If it's tied down tight enough, it shouldn't move at all. The trick is to not have any play in the suspension that would loosen the straps.

@@jasonspring6970 Not at all a dumb question. If there's a cross current, no big deal - unless there's other boats around in which case it's a pain in the butt. In those cases, if I'm at a sandbar that's shallow, I recruit help. I otherwise hold tension to keep me in place and move my ass at warp speed once I'm down to one anchor to haul it up fast and get moving, sometimes using boat power to get me to the forward anchor faster. It's not always easy being solo.

@sweetvelocitybps2 жыл бұрын
An alarm may go off if equipped with one. If not, it’s more likely to smell it first, then smoke will start billowing out of every crevice around the engine compartment. Flames would be next since they seek air. And it would be fast.

@sweetvelocitybps2 жыл бұрын
I've only ever seen them on some commercial fishing boats and not while navigating on open water. I'm not sure of the regulations for use but for certain they will kill your night vision and are a risk to other boaters, upsetting others' night vision and confusing or making navigation more challenging. How will another boat know what type of vessel you are and your direction of travel if blinded by a light bar? I don't recommend it.
