Here's what I pulled from this-- when animating, analyze the specific movement pattern and shape of the animated thing, and a base print always helps. Really helpful!

Now this is a tutorial. Most other toon flame tutorials here on youtube are After Effects "Do this, enter this value, do that, theres a flame" with no explanation for why something is being done. Basically creating a massive army of unskilled labor and not artists.

I always have trouble animating effects straight ahead, even though that's the recognised method, but for some reason it never occurred to me to map out the wave motion beforehand as a guide! Thanks for opening my eyes to that possibility! I don't think I'm going to be setting fire to my frames though, haha :)

a really cool idea! For me i think the only reason the end result looked a bit odd was that it was too abstracted, and there was no environmental context for it (maybe some logs underneath it or a fireplace around it would've helped idk i dont wanna backseat design though it still looked good)

It's definitely a fascinating experiment, even if the results weren't quite what you expected. It's a good learning experience, right? Speaking of learning experience, I wish your series was around when I was learning animation, because fire was one of the hardest FX for me and you break it down so beautifully here, it's helped a ton.

I did this looong ago (maybein the 90s? yeah..ok boomer), but I used a small soldering torch for the burn effects. It would scorch well before setting on fire. If I was to do it again, I would use some Nitrogen (from a mig) and fill the area and then bring the flame down. Im curious how the naturally snuffing flame (from the N2) would look. I can't call myself an animator, but every few years I do a project...(doing one now, which might end up a trend in my vids, because working on pieces of junk with a crippled and broken spine wasnt hard enough...) It was a cool flame. And I understand why you dont post the final product. People steal everything...

Maybe a silly question but is there a way to insert a frame between 2 existing frames in Animdessin2? The "create InBetween" button just seems to stick a new frame at the end of my timeline no matter where the playhead is or what clips are selected. Do we really have to drag and drop new frames from the end to the place we need them?
