Quick fix of Mitsubishi Pajero Gear Stick that is Stuck (English Version)

Let me add my thanks. Last night I was stuck in park with a Pajero borrowed from a friend. My initial horror of a potential broken gearbox turned to joy when I found this post. Thank you 😁

Thank you for the video. The piece broke while I was outside luckily I had a screwdriver with me and was able to operate it manually to get home. Frankly I'm very disappointed. A car that costs an arm and a leg, an suv purchases for its sturdiness to be brought to a standstill because of a small insignificant piece of plastic. On top of that I looked for it here and couldn't find it, they said either to buy the whole transmission lever or try and order it from abroad. Well to not give them the satisfaction here is a workaround that works perfectly. I used the trust device, the plastic peace at the end of a pen that was laying around in the house and the transmission lever works good as new. The white plastic tube needs to protrude an extra 2cm for the button mechanism to reach it and the pen's thrust piece does that. In case you want to check it out the lever button can be removed easily, just pull it towards you (you can use a flat head screwdriver). There is nothing holding it in place except the axe which doesn't go all the way through, so you don't risk breaking anything. That should get you around this annoying problem.

Lifesaver. Our pajero got stuck today at the mall parking lot. Mitsubishi service center did not want to help, the 24/7 towing crew/roadside assistance says they could not come inside the mall parking and I need to call a technician because they only tow cars. This spare part is cheaper than a cup of designer coffee. Thank God and thank you Ahmed for this.

Spare part is available at Mitsubishi service center. Nothing high-tech about that piece of plastic. It looks like a common problem (wear and tear) as the salesman was offering to sell me 2 pcs.

I faced the same issue few years ago, and found out the issue myself intuitively and rectified. Easy fix, once you come to know about it. Otherwise it feels as if the 'gearbox' is broken. In fact the 'heavy' Gear Shifter of this Pajero/Shogun is simply operating a Plastic Switch! Your video will help many people to recover from embarrassing situation, if they search in the KZbin first (3$) before calling the service center (possibly $300 or even $3000)! This part will deteriorate due to aging and break by itself after 5-8 years. It is recommended to change this part if your car is older than 6-7 years, without waiting for it to happen. Also, if you are stuck on the road, you don't need to replace the broken part immediately to get the vehicle moving. Once the gear box lever is opened, you can disengage the locking mechanism with your hand by pulling (or pushing?, I don't remember) the rod inside and operate the gear lever as you want.

@@louise5065 It is called SLEEVE on its package! Yes, it is a plastic sleeve on a rod within the gear lever. Don't know the exact name. Part No. 2410A013. A Google search for the part no will give you all details and photos.

Thank you for the tip Ahmed. After calling the AA who said it was a major gear problem my vehicle was towed home and my insurance company arranged to take it in for a mechanical repair right before Christmas this week. I Googled the problem and up came your KZbin video and it worked. Went looking for a new sleeve and no new ones in the whole of New Zealand (ordering one is a 2 month wait by sea freight from Japan, no airfreight because of COVID) but found one from a wrecker, problem fixed! Merry Christmas.

@@sonjastowers7775 hi, got it from mitsa bitsy parts, firth st, drury, Auckland. You can also order from Mitsubishi Parts in Newmarket and it takes about two month to arrive because of shipping delays.
