Quick Flip Around, Train Heads Back To Crivitz After A Derailment In Wisconsin!

Tuesday evening after I filmed ELS 501 & ELS 503 in Crivitz, they dropped a few Alter Metal cars on the ground and ripped out a lot of track! I guess that MOW crew will have a lot of work ahead of them this week ahead..
This was ELS 502 and ELS 1221 heading back south with more freight from LP in Sagola, they were also needed to go pull back the remaining cars that were put back on the track on the north side of the derailment site.

The old mechanical bells are far better than e-bells! The bell on the crossing of C Street is one of the fastest I've heard! LOL Sure is nice DCRC (or whomever) trimmed the shrubbery for your videoing pleasure!

It's a good sign to see them clearing out the Northwoods crop of Smart Siding at least it gets closer to Green Bay to make an interchange perhaps before the weekend is over. One substantial customer that would have had difficulties with no rail service would have been Algoma Steel in Sault Sainte Marie which is on the Ontario side and should still be getting taconite by rail but more importantly outbound coil flat plate and pipe which can range from 30 to 60 cars daily. On a closer note several weeks ago the Goodman Lumber Company west of Pembine abruptly shut down. An interesting operation that operated steam relatively late and also supplied many of mine timber for Calumet and Heckla in later days. Hopefully a new buyer can be found that might utilize rail service. In the latter years it has been known as Besse Forest Products

Can't Algoma steel ship inbound/outbound by water if necessary?

@@erie910 they can get taconite via LS&I then via water provided they can get a vessel on the spot Market which cost more than a seasonal contract. Outbound by water could be done provided you have quite a bit going to the same customer. There's that added expense to everything and water is slower they could resort to trucking it across the border and transloading it on the Michigan side to rail. I do remember the use of lake barges from East Chicago to Milwaukee for A O Smith when they were making Auto frames. This was during extremely bad winter in the late seventies and the Milwaukee Road was falling down. The mill could load directly into the barge but you need a fairly calm lake for tugboats to pull them and the best they could do was a 2or 3-day Journey to the port of Milwaukee and then trucked to the plant. Nothing worse than the cost of Transportation outweighing the cost of the material

The CN/CPKC strike is like nothing like I ever seen before in ages with both railroads down but it started out a a lock out. sorry ELS had another derailment. glad no one was injured.

It would be cool if the city of Iron Mountain bought and restored the depot. Perhaps a Chamber of Commerce or Visitors Bureau type of thing, even a local historical museum.

The same saga, Jason, another derailment. How many more will it take before ELS does some real track maintenance??? It seems every couple months another derailment. This dumps Alter Metal all over the place. ELS will have to send a Backhoe on tracks with an attachment with magnet to pick up all the scrap metal and reload the rail cars, that will be a costly experience. Just maybe.......but my hopes in the negative position that ELS does anything positive in the future about the tracks. What do you think, Jason?

The derail was south of Jason. As there is only one track yes it will stop all traffic north and south, Supposedly it is only 100ft or so it should be fixed quickly...

It wasnt a strike, it was a lockout by management on the Canadian based railroads, and the CN side is already back on the job, as of 8-23-24, according to my CN engineer son-in-law.

The last major track project was partially financed by WISDOT freight rail improvement and preservation program from the state line south quite a few miles. Work was completed by Holubar Railroad Contractors out of Green Bay. It was only possible because of the combination grant and low interest loan. That had to be at least 10 years ago.

@@chrisduprey7283 Thanks. I'm familiar with the upgrades on the Napoleon, Defiance, and Western but I had no knowledge of what had been done on the ELS. Most people have no concept of the huge costs for fixing and upgrading long neglected tracks.

Because of the lesser maintenance they maintain a speed of 25 and lower ….the fellows you see operating these trains and working on track and crossing protection maintenance have families to feed…good day …

Hey Jason, have you heard any updates on the derailment in Wisconsin? How bad will that affect ELS until it's repaired, any idea? Do you think you will have any videos or stills of the derailment area? It's Sunday morning so that has given them four days so far to get the repairs started there in Wisconsin. Is there any website we could look up what the progress is? Anyway, have a great day and maybe they will send a short train today?

I stopped by the derailment site this morning and there was only one gondola on the southbound side They had laid some ties and a couple rails laid but nobody was working and there was nothing there to fix them. They still had 70’ of rail to lay. It’s going to be awhile before they run trains north again

I never saw anything but a few grade crossings bid out for this summer.
