A idea to do some thinking on, on the aft 18" platform (closest to the rear bumper), put a couple runners going fore and aft then another piece of plywood on top of the runners. The whole combination would raise the aft section by 2". When the bed is down the thinner foam would go on the aft platform and all the cushions would be the same height. When the bed is in the seat mode the thinner cushion is used for the seat back like you are doing now and the thicker cushion would go on the aft platform section. That aft seat would be 2" higher, but who cares, no one is sitting on it. You could drop down to 4 cushions total that way. Anyway just my initial thought, it probably requires some more thinking. I do like the way you did the drawer slides. The video is informative and well done.

I had a bed like that but found it difficult to switch from bed to chair. I had to attach a strap to the middle of the bed so I could pull it up while pushing in the front of the bed. It was very heavy and difficult to do. I didn't see you actually show us how you put the bed back into chair mode, just from chair to bed mode. Can you update the video or send a short where you do this?
@rayrambles13 күн бұрын
I will definitely try to show that in a future video. To lift it up - I have to reach between the cushions and grab the platform in one of the circle cutouts, its not ideal. I'm still looking for an easier way. A strap sounds like a good idea.

It’s biased on the VW Westy set up just with out using rumble seat style hinges. As some one who live in a Westy on and off for 4 years I 100% prefer this style layout vs what most people do with having a permanent bed. These types of layouts give you so much more usefulness vs a permanent bed, especially in a small van
@rayrambles11 күн бұрын
I agree! That Westy design is the best.

Fantastic design! Thanks for sharing it. 😁 FYI, having the music playing *while you are speaking* makes it way more difficult for folks with hearing issues to understand what you're saying. Yes, I do use the closed captioning, but the more time I have to spend reading them, the less time I have for actually *seeing* the content of the video. Please consider reserving the music for times when you are not talking. That would make things *so* much easier for folks with hearing issues like me. 💕

The bed in my van is constructed out of 1"x 4" 's. Actual dimensions 3/4"x 3 1/2" and it is plenty strong enough. After 3 years of use I've had no problems. Not a single steel bracket used.

It looks like you could get away with using 2x2s really, maybe adding in an extra one or two. It's a really nice design. I am not sure I get why you did not design the foldable bed to fold back far enough to be able to use the same cushion that you said was too thick. Why not just modify the seat back of the folding bed. I have a minivan I think pretty close to the same size as yours and it's interesting to try to visualize doing this.
@rayrambles7 күн бұрын
Thanks. I used the thicker cushion at first and at that time I didn’t want to mess with the platform and frame anymore. So I just tried a thinner cushion as a test and liked it - so for me that was the easiest fix- to just add a cushion.
