A great selection of small vans. It a shame you have to pay a premium to go small. Would be nice if UK manufacturers built vans like the French vans you reviewed. I miss the basic vans from yesteryear & their price tags.

Brilliant! Let’s start with orange ;-) Great observations on functional, practical but stylish design :)
@NotAnotherWhiteBox2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Becky, I’m still drawn in by anything orange 😂 There’s a hint of retro to that at least! I was impressed that caravanners seemed to be taking these unusual caravans more seriously this year, the odd few dismissing them straight away as usual, but a couple of ladies were putting their name down on that Basecamp 6 as I was finishing filming because they loved the design!

I love all these diddy, quirky vans too! Much better than these great big things which to me is wasted space, you only take up so much room at any one time! Great vlog Cameron! We've missed you! Hugs xxx 🥰

In the '80's I had a Sprite 400, and I've never lost my love of small caravans! The Freedom ranges especially appeal to me! Not so interested in things like the Adria Action or the Mink 2.0, and the Wingamm, but perhaps that's as much to do with my age as anything else! :-) But thank you for escorting us around the NEC Cameron! 🙂
@NotAnotherWhiteBox2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris, glad you enjoyed it. Of course, the Sprite 400 holds a special place in my heart too! I think that's where I get my love of small caravans from. It's a shame that the UK only get the basic two-berth version of the Adria Action, as there's actually a few different layouts of it offered on the continent.

Great vid, and thanks for taking time to film it, wasn’t able to go this year so was informative and great for interior inspiration Happy to see the resurgence in colours after decade’s of beige 😒 Great to see, oranges and reds in particular being used.
@NotAnotherWhiteBox2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gav, yes it’s really great that manufacturers are starting to be more adventurous with caravan interiors now. The vibe seems to be moving away from wood grain and curtains. I have to admit, I hate how beige and grey your average caravan is now. I’d quite like to see a green interior that reflects current interior design trends.
@gavc64422 жыл бұрын
@@NotAnotherWhiteBox Yea that would be amazing. Been doing the interior of my 88 Autoquest, trying to find a blend of 80s retro chic and 21st century sheen without being tacky lol Hope u come up to Scotland at some point, and I’m going to join your retro club I just found out about it. All the best

@@gavc6442 what's the details for the retro club? I'm new, and haven't got my first yet, but............I'm spread thinking I need 3, depending on season, tow car, distance travelling, and whether I'm solo, or with other half znd our large dog? 🙂 ( don't know where I'm going to keep them all? 🤣)

Check out the U.K. product of over 20 years ago called the ABI Adventurer it was the U.K. grandmother of this type of lightweight caravan, 4 berth, max weight of 850 kg and a 200 kg load margin

. . . . "It's a really practical kitchen space" . .(10:52) . . .Oh no it isn't, it's raining! Your baked bean saucepan will be full of water before the beans get hot. And you will need to be wearing a wind proof, waterproof, thermal coat. Apart from the ignoring of what micro-caravanning would be like in Britain, that's a good presentation, well done.
@NotAnotherWhiteBox2 жыл бұрын
I can’t disagree with that. A few years back, I pulled onto a Caravan Club site on a stormy November dark night and proceeded to just park up my £2,500 classic Hymer Motorhome and keep the heating on, observing someone opposite try and cook dinner in his £80,000 VW California Camper in a kitchen in the back hatch. Aside from the wind battering him, an equal picture of misery was his wife and child huddled under the awning because there was nowhere to sit in the camper.

Nice choice of caravans you present here. Just a bit of language: You need to pronounce the "k" in Knaus, otherwise we Germany would presume it's a "Naus" like the English "house", but never mind😁😉
@NotAnotherWhiteBox2 жыл бұрын
Haha thank you Holger; I was aware of this but I always thought in Britain it was Knaus as in house because if someone “has a bit of nous” (pronounced like I pronounced Knaus), they have a bit of common sense/intelligence, so it seems like a suitable name for a well designed caravan!

I guess it’s a different market - from what I’ve seen, Australian caravans tend to be more geared to tougher road conditions and wild camping. Bailey exported models there once and they looked drastically different to their UK counterparts

Why do these look so much better than the ones in the US?
@NotAnotherWhiteBox Жыл бұрын
We have a lot more innovation in Europe as our towcars are much smaller than those in the US. Our regulations and camping habits make it easier to have a great influence on these designs. That said, you can buy the Tab caravans featured here in the US and the British Barefoot caravan is launching in North America for 2023.

Coolest new caravans with rear doors and extra space!!!! Rubbish!!! This style of caravan was also made by the uk caravan company ABI who produced the 4 berthlightweight caravan the Adventurer before 2000. This caravan with a a rear door, side door, clean vinyl floor with no carpet, modern lighting and modern upholstery. IIt’s max moving weight of 850kg and it’s unladen weight of 650kg gives a loading of 200kg, weights still - I understand - still unmatched by today’s vans. Sadly the Adventurer was vilified by the uk caravan press who appeared to play to the ‘frilly lampshades supporters’ and helped to relegate this modern ABI caravan out of the sales league. It’s about time that this uk leading lightweight design was recognised and perhaps a resurrection maybe be on the cards?
@NotAnotherWhiteBox2 жыл бұрын
I’m totally with you on this one John; I LOVE the ABI Adventurer and I’d love to own one. I remember when it was launched and seeing it at was then the Manchester Caravan Show and there was literally NO ONE looking at the Adventurer! It was like it somehow upset people! I thought it was great though I must confess I’ve never actually seen one on my travels since then. However, the rear door design wasn’t new. Sprite had a fairly popular compact two berth called the Cadet from 1969-1972 which sold well all over Europe. There was also the Astral Sunrise from 1961/2 that not only had a rear door, but a Luton top over the A-frame and the whole rear panel lifted up to become a sun shelter. Bluebird copied and simplified the idea with their Joie De Vivre model during the same era. Further back, Eccles had exactly the same layout as the ABI Adventurer since the early 1900s. I like how ABI made a really practical and futuristic tourer with the Adventurer. It was low frills, which I’m learning was probably their mistake. The success of the Swift Basecamp is that it’s marketed as a concept, rather than a caravan, and it’s actually a luxurious caravan with lots of kit as standard. Caravanners complain that the Basecamp is expensive because they’re used to unusual concepts being budget caravans. Manufacturers seem to have misinterpreted the brief that people who want something different don’t really want a budget/cheap/low spec caravan. I recon had the Adventurer had a few extras, it would have faired better. Then again, the market was an entirely different place 25 years ago.
@JohnSmith-bx8zb2 жыл бұрын
@@NotAnotherWhiteBox 👍👍👍. Mind you the way costs and fuel are going a small lightweight 4 berth with minimal add ons is a step in the right direction. Lightweight to me is 850kg laden 650kg unladen with 200kg load is to me the benchmark. Length both inside and total are also important. Have thought about a Basecamp, to heavy not enough load and too long
