Quick Lesson - Layering for Cold Weather

Layering is not something that the outdoor industry focuses enough on teaching, but it is an essential part of staying safe by helping to avoid hypothermia. Perfect for fishing in the cold

It gets cold out here on fishing boats. There's not enough talk about this stuff in the outdoor industry and people end up getting cold just waiting for the fish to bite. Luckily, it is easy to stay warm if you're ready for it. What do you use out there?

@@RaftingMagazine the company that makes those disposable hand warmers also makes some adhesive “body warmers” that you can stick onto your clothes. Putting one close to your chest or upper back will keep your core a lot warmer, which in turn keeps your extremities warmer as well. As your core gets cold your body stops pumping as much blood to your arms and legs (which is why you often can’t feel your fingers/feet when it’s super cold outside). Warming up your core is the fastest and most effective way to keep the rest of your body warm. If you’re being active it’s not that big of a deal, but if you’re doing something that requires you to be stationary like hunting or fishing it helps tremendously and I never hear many people talk about them. Sticking a canteen with boiling water or a rock from a fire in your jacket’s chest pocket has essentially the same effect, just a shorter duration.
