Thanks for the video. What’s the cable you plugged into the sfp. Is it passive DAC? I’ve heard some issues with these switches
@homenetworkguy

Passive DACs. I've tried several with this switch and they have worked without issue. DACs can have issues of course, and I was struggling getting a 10G SFP+ NIC in my TrueNAS box to connect properly to my Grandstream switch with a passive DAC. I tried 2 different brand DACs as well as 2 different brand SFP+ NICs. What I ended up doing is setting the speed to 10G manually and Grandstream has an option to specify the DAC cable length. Once I done that, it worked properly. That was the only time I've had issues with DACs and I currently have 3-4 systems/switches connected via DAC cables.

I need help with mine. if I plug my mesh (gigabit only but I get 1.2gbps to my home) into the network switch with rj45, nothing else will work on the switch. Do you know what could be the problem?

I'm not sure which mesh router/AP you're using, but you should be able to plug the switch into one of the ports to add more network interfaces.

@@homenetworkguy I am using this system "Linksys MX5300 Velop AX". I have two nodes total. The configuration is Modem to Ethernet Switch, from Ethernet switch to Linksys MX5300 Velop AX, and everything after I plug in the Linksys MX5300 Velop AX nothing gets internet. Doesn't matter if the others are plugged into the other ports first (like in port 2-3 and then the mesh router is in 4 or the very last one at 8). If I plug in the other devices for ethernet connection and then the mesh router, the mesh router won't connect to the internet. It is baffling. I am using the switch to get the best connection as I have 1.2gbps coming into my home and the Linksys system is only gigabit.

Quick question. I have the same switch, if I plug the RJ45 coming out of my modem, to the SPF+ like you have. If I plug the regular RJ45 to other ports, it should work right. Is it possible to plug the SPF+ port and use the other SPF+ and plug it to the computer while having the other ones plugged in 2.5Gb/s ports. What I want to do is, plug the RJ45 cable to the SPF+ port, since there is two, and plug the empty one beside it to have 10Gb/s to one computer, while having the remaining RJ45 cables to the 4 RJ45 sockets and have 2.5Gb/s there speed is it possible. So basically 1 Transceiver, SFP+ to RJ45 like you have, and have another Transceiver, SFP+ to RJ45 in the other empty SPF+ slot go to the one computer have 10Gb.s while having the others plugged in the 2.5Gb/s second ports. Is this possible.

The only thing I would be concerned with is that you said connect your modem to the SFP+ port... do you mean the modem/router from your ISP (or a router that you own) or just a device that functions purely as a modem (no router/wifi capabilities)? If you connect this switch to a router and all of the devices are on the same network, they would operate at the speed of the connected interfaces (2.5G or 10G). The speed of your Internet connection will depend on the speed of the interface of the modem/router and the ISP service plan you have, of course. What you can't do is plug a modem (that is not a router) into this switch and use the switch for other devices because the modem needs to connect directly to the WAN interface of the router (if you have a separate router). If you have an all-in-one modem/router/wifi box, you should be able to use this switch as you described (if I am properly tracking everything you are saying you want to do with this switch). One other possibility that some users do is use a cheap switch like this to convert optical SFP+ connections to RJ45 connections (basically using the switch as a media converter). But if you do this, you cannot connect other devices to this switch.

@@homenetworkguy So ya, I have fiber to home. So its a fiber optic modem with wifi, with 5 ports all RJ45 ports... 1 RJ45 port is 10Gb/s the rest are the standard 1Gb/s. So at the moment I have one ethernet cable coming from the modem, to the 2.5GB/s switch which are all RJ45, and from there going its going to two PC with Network cards 2.5GB each one. What I want to do is, if possible is since this switch has two SFP+ ports and the rest are 2.5GB/s RJ45. I want to plug the one coming from the modem the 10G cable and plug it in like you have an the video via SFP+ Transceiver, SFP+ to RJ45 to that cable plug that to one of the SFP+ port, and use the other empty SFP+ to make that go out to my 1 PC that I upgraded the network card to 10GB/s and use the other 2.5Gb/s standard RJ45 ports to my other PC that use the 2.5GB So bascially, 1 PC would use the SFP+ port that coming in and plug one of my PC to the empty slot next to is. For that empty SFP+ I am going to use a 10G SFP+ Twinax Cable which goes directly from that port to the pc that has the 10Gb/s network card that is also a SFP+ and use the remaining ports that are 2.5Gb/s speed for the other PC. As the setup is now, the modem (internet) is plugged in the 2.5GB RJ45 port and all other PC are plugged to the other 2.5Gb/s, I want to use the SFP+ port to have 1 PC that is 10gb/s and the rest 2.5Gb/s I hope this makes a little more sense... Thank you for taking the time to aswer..

It sounds like it's an all-in-modem/router from the ISP since it has WiFi so the switch should work as you described. You can connect the 10G RJ45 from the fiber all-in-one box to a SFP+ to RJ45 module to the switch and the PC to the switch via SFP+ and 2.5G for everything else. That would give your PC the ability to download faster than 2.5G if your Internet is faster than 2.5G. If your Internet is not faster than 2.5G, you could connect another system such as a NAS to the other 10G interface of the switch so you have faster file transfers, for example.

@homenetworkguy

I’ve been using it for a while and it seems to work well for basic higher speed interface needs. There was one time recently when I testing a bunch of stuff out that one of my devices was stuck running at 100Mbps so I restarted the switch and it was fine. It seems pretty solid other than that one glitch I experienced. To be fair, I was playing around with several things so it might’ve got confused somehow and got stuck auto negotiating 100Mbps. Haha. This model doesn’t support PoE so you’d have to get a PoE version (or use a PoE injector) so I can’t vouch for how well a PoE version functions.

What brand SFP's do they recommend for these cheaper switches that have SFP+ port.
@homenetworkguy
@homenetworkguy 10 ай бұрын
Typically with these type of generic switches, they are not vendor locked so generic DACs and modules from say 10Gtek would likely be sufficient. I use the 10Gtek DAC cables and they work without issue.

Can any of the ports be used as an uplink port or it has a dedicated uplink port?
@homenetworkguy
@homenetworkguy Жыл бұрын
Any port. I’d say pretty much all modern switches work that way. You don’t need any special crossover cables/uplink ports these days since it handles the connectivity automatically. I recall back in the day I had to buy a special crossover cable to connect two switches together or 2 PCs directly together. I’m glad that’s no longer an issue.

You should be able to get 2.5 Gbps between both switches. Cat6 should be able to handle that easily.. maybe try another cable to ensure it’s not bad?

Are you referring to RJ45 10Gbps Ethernet or SFP+ fiber modules/DAC cables? Or RJ45 to SFP+ modules? I have found that they make more energy efficient RJ45 to SFP+ modules that generate a lot less heat. Also I think SFP+ DAC cables generate less heat than fiber modules (in general).

I mostly use SFP+ DAC cables since all of my 10G connections except for 1 (my main desktop PC in my office next to my server closet) are within my rack. However, for my PC, I use RJ45 10Gbps since I did not run fiber inside my wall. That means I have to use 1 10Gbps RJ45 to SFP+ module. It gets pretty warm but it hasn't shut down due to heat (probably because I'm only use one RJ45 to SFP+ module instead of several in the same switch). Maybe in the future I can get a more energy efficient one that does 10Gbps. I didn't realize they made them until I bought some that operate at 2.5Gbps that I got to do some testing.

I have found these cheap Chinese switches quite good. They are really good for upgrading short rj45 CAT6 links in buildings to 10gbe links with a SFP+. I have had issues with cheap managed switches and range with 2.5gbe switch ports. The SFP+ ports seem unaffected. Good to see 2.5gbe and 10gbe switches becoming affordable.
@homenetworkguy
@homenetworkguy Жыл бұрын
Yeah I definitely think you can get away with getting cheap brands for unmanaged switches but for managed switches, you make lack certain features or have a web interface that’s not in English (if you buy from Aliexpress for example). I am also glad the prices are dropping because it helps increase adoption of 2.5/10G. We’ve been on 1G for far too long.

Thanks! Believe it or not, I was using the mic in that video. However, a few months ago, I bought some acoustic panels for my office, which I think helped dampen some of the noise. Also I reduced the fan noise coming from my PC since was being picked up in the recordings. I try to do a little bit of noise reduction in software as well. If you watch my most recent videos where I'm using the mic, I believe the audio is a bit cleaner. My office configuration has terrible acoustics so I'm working to mitigate some of those issues. I'm working on small incremental improvements over time!

Jumbo for 10GBE? I use 100GBE and dont use Jumbo. It is just a PITA having a large network. Jumbo gives you maybe 10% more performance. This isnt worth it. Jumbo only were relevant using 1GBit iSCSI. Since then it isnt. Everybody who needs to rely on Jumbo to get a 10GBE link staturated have a hardware bottleneck somewhere.
@homenetworkguy
@homenetworkguy 6 ай бұрын
Yeah it’s not necessary. It’s easy to manage jumbo frames on a small dedicated VLAN or separate 10 Gbps switch on a small network but like you said you can get about 9.9 Gbps vs 9.4 Gbps with jumbo frames. Not a huge difference of 500 Mbps. I kinda wish larger frames were the default because it’s less load on the firewall to process fewer, larger frames especially as network speeds increase over time as technology advances.
