Hi Bruce, i think your channel is great, just flew my ZMR250 ( low cost drone build ) for the first time today. I would not have even tried to build one without your series, keep up the good work and i hope all gets sorted out and you can fly again soon. Paul.

Great video, I could watch you talk about antennas and RF all day! I can sort of tell just by looking at the thing that it won't work well because 2.4 and 5GHz use different size antennas.

Hey Bruce, I'm trying to do a 10 km FPV flight with a 1/4 scale ARF plane with a 28cc gasoline engine. I have been looking at one of the big dome style antennas (about the size of a stack of 5 CD's) and a 2.0 watt amplifier. (admittedly it's what someone else used and had success with) But I was just wondering what your take is on the different frequencies? i.e. do you get better range comparing 900mhz to 2.4 to 5.8 per m/w you put in the system? are more line of sight dependant than others?
@xjet9 жыл бұрын
+shoominati23 To be honest... I really wouldn't recommend a 10Km flight with a gas-powered model. Although I have my reservations about the over-regulation associated with FPV flying, there are *many* extra factors involved with BVLOS FPV operations, especially with something that could pose a very real threat to person or property -- such as an IC engine turning a large flesh-cleaving prop :-) However, if you want long-range video then you'll almost certainly have to opt for a lower-frequency and 1280MHz is widely regarded as the best option for long-range FPV. higher frequencies (such as 5.8GHz) will give you plenty of range under ideal circumstances but that generally involves a line-of-sight trajectory, which isn't possible with long-range unless you fly at a significant altitude (thus making you a threat to full-sized aircraft). I'm a strong advocate for creating areas where people can safely and legally fly long-range and/or high altitude FPV by way of excluding full-sized aircraft but sadly, the aviation administrators (despite their claims to be pro-safety) seem to be against such an initiative. Fly safe!
@camofpv9 жыл бұрын
oh man, one advice. before you actually do your 10km flight you need to read read read. the lower the frequency the better penetration you have and distance as well, but there is a lot more to it. A LOT. Take care. also I think that Bruce have already made a video on that subject.
@shoominati239 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it would be FAR out in the country where there is flat terrain as far as the eye can see, the odd hill and not much traffic - of any sort ;) I'm sorry, I must have missed that particular video
@chrisbewrx9 жыл бұрын
+shoominati23 If you plan a long range flight in the country, make sure you check your flight path and attempt to get permission from the landowners of any property you fly over. I'm not sure of your country of origin, but I'm guessing a flight without permission would be illegal? I personally don't see the "thrill" of long range flights, you end up with a bunch of boring footage, that most people speed up on KZbin.. I've been out to 2km and I still cut portions of the footage to speed it up lol. What I would like to see would be a close range big gasser pulling some cool stunts and a view from a very detailed cockpit.
@shoominati239 жыл бұрын
I mean far enough out in the country that I'd only be flying over crown land, no farms to speak of ;) and no having to ask permission to come on a property to retrieve the plane if something were to go wrong ;) remember, there is a lot of barren desert in Australia..
@Blisoft9 жыл бұрын
Bruce, when you buy a set of 5.8Ghz antennas you generally get a 3 & a 4 lobe arrangement marked TX & RX respectively. Why is this? Why not use 4 lobe for both TX & RX? Hope you can shed some light on the subject.. Brett
@andrewmcneil9 жыл бұрын
Bruce don't know if you have got these of a third party and been misdescribed but the company that makes them does not claim they are circular polarized that maybe why it had no reference to it on the housing. It is just a bowtie and a dog leg dipole.

Bruce as far as running lipos in series or par can you get the same effect with a wireharness hooking them up one way or the other? I guess what I am asking instead of soldering the 2 batts together can I just make a harness to do the samething or will the harness defeat the whole purpose!

I would love you to provide a breakdown in the differences between the cheap Chinese antennas and the quality antennas so the non electronic engineer peoples can see and differentiate between them. What makes a good design? What makes a poor design? What makes it work? & not just how the frequency works but the antenna itself. PLEASE.
@cstangeland00010009 жыл бұрын
Sadly one of the best antennas I have found yet. I tried expensive ones that are barely flyable. These are cheap and just work.

Hi Bruce. A very interesting antenna. I expect the reason they've bent the two sides of the 2.4GHz antenna the way they have is so the VSWR is acceptable for the two bands and to reduce the interaction between the two antennae. However I doubt the Impedance (Z) will be 50Ohm and the Reactance (X) will be quite high resulting in very poor efficiency. As Scotty on the Enterprise once said " Ya can nay change the laws of Physics, Captain" Regards Nidge

+tmy158 I'd love to fly with you man. Unfortunately, my dream of creating a model park where people can come from all over the world to fly and enjoy the hobby looks to be sunk due to the rather conservative thinking of the local council here. Hi Bruce - think you have more signatures on the petition than the entire MFNZ membership. I get it about the support network you have built up around the area you live. Leaving that would be daunting. The other idea would be to make it a fly-in fly-out job that we in WA have half the working population doing. Open the Patreon account that several people have suggested and setup somewhere else as remote worker on say 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off. Might allow you to fly in one of the districts that are model friendly. In Western Australia it seems that at least half the working population are remote workers so it does not seem as strange here however it may be something you have not thought of as it is probably unusual for NZ. Having said that the electrician on a rig off Barrow Island lived in NZ and commuted every month.

Bruce, since you can't fly and are very knowledgeable on electronics, have you considered doing a hobby robotics, ground/water R/C vehicle channel? You can't do R/C TX at the airfield, but you could do that at home. Your lab at the airfield could serve as the robotics lab and weekly news studio. Maybe add some 3D printing content, too, with the emphasis on robotic/RC parts made with 3D printers, since 3D printers have become very popular as they decrease in price. Your talented delivery style is much better and more entertaining than that found on most other channels. If you can't get a small 3D printer for free to do a review, here's a very clever and very inexpensive new design that I definitely plan to buy when they become available: www.kickstarter.com/projects/tiko3d/tiko-the-unibody-3d-printer/description tiko3d.com/

Move to the OUTBACKs of Oz and fly till your Lipos smoke. Theres bugger all to bug you out there, err maybe the odd inscet or small harmless snake but the weather is better than here. With your background it would be easy. Also getting stuff from china would be easier too. (I'm onto week 15 waiting for my stuff to arrive, stuck in Oz somewhere probably, lol ) Life is too short and boring to stay in one village.
