Here is a short overview of our 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500HD truck that we bought to tow our Grand Design XLS trailer.
We had a 2015 Silverado 1500 with a 5.3L 4x4 double cab for about 5000 miles. While it did work it was within 150 pounds of the max payload (1725 pounds) and on some of the grades the 3.42 axle ratio was a issue on the grades that we had it in. There were times that we had to get into 2nd gear and below 40 MPH to climb the grades towards the top. We want a dependable rig that will last the miles as we are getting ready to retire in the next few years and don't want to beat the life out of our very nice truck.
The new truck has 4.10 axle ratio and it does make towing a better experience. Also with all the larger coolers for engine and transmission the temps run cooler in all temperatures we have been in so far.
Thanks for viewing this and there will be more content coming! If you have any questions or comments, please let me know!

The front looks so beautiful. One of the other important things you said about this is how it tows. Lots of people bring their 1/2 ton numbers without knowing how well built HDs are

Thanks for thre review, actually looking at a used one right now for towing my boat. We have a 1500 which I love but it struggles up hill with a 6,000 boat this review was exactly what I was looking for,honest cut to the chase information. thanks

Beautiful truck. We also have a 2500HD diesel. Averaging 12 MPG when towing our Airstream!! Take care guys. ~Eli

Wow that’s impressive! We just got back from a 3000 mile trip from Utah to Minnesota and averaged just a little over 8.4 mpg. But when you do the math, if I got 11 mpg with an updated truck my difference per 1000 miles is less than a $100 in fuel costs. I’d never get anywhere close to recovering the differential in cost between selling my trucks and getting another. Then add is the possibility of issues, trying to find someone to work on a much more complicated power train and I think now, I’m going to stick with what we have. I’m sure my truck would get better mpg with a airstream. Our trailer is seriously one of the worst for aerodynamics… Thanks for the comment! Stay safe

The 2019 2500 is the very last chevy model to have the old but very reliable 6 liter LS. Its low on power but that can easily be fixed if one would want. Its a no brainer. The new 6.6 gas is way more complex

Thanks for the comments. Last year we traded it in for a new truck to tow a new 5th wheel. I'm planning on a video of the new truck (now 1 year old next month) soon!

I have this same truck and it pulls my 28 ft travel trailer real nice. Did it struggle with your 5th wheel or did you get the new truck ahead of time to get ready for 5th wheel?
@BillUtah
@BillUtah 3 ай бұрын
@@docrx1857 we got the 2023 in preparation to getting the 5th wheel. The trailer is 30.5 feet long and right at 10k pounds. While on paper the 2019 Chevy would be able to carry the new 5th wheel with about 250 pounds of payload left our new truck has well over 1000 pounds more payload available. I definitely miss the Chevy truck. It was more comfortable and road much better than our current truck. Thanks for the response

It was a nice truck! Especially at 2019 pricing. We traded it in and got almost $9,000 more for a new truck as we went with a new trailer. I’ll probably be posting an overview of the new truck and trailer soon. Take care, Bill

Was the 30,000 dollar amount a used price or brand new?

Hey just bought one, at starting it goes to almost 14 volts on battery, but going down the road it stays almost at 12 volts. Is that normal or should I look into replacing battery. I could have swore running it should be pushing 14 volts except when off.
@BillUtah
@BillUtah 2 ай бұрын
@@Poolsrlife Hi, I no longer own this truck but I definitely saw anything from 12 to 14 volts while going down the road. Never an issue with the charging/battery system. It was a great truck and while I did have an issue that took the truck out of service for over a month, that time period was more a crappy dealership than the truck IMO. Take care! Bill

That's normal. I have a 2011 Traverse and a 2013 Suburban. That does the same thing. It's a feature that monitors ambient temp and state of charge. When it drops to 12 volts it's preventing overcharging the battery. I like it because I never have to worry about the battery dying.

Hey Bill, what elevation are you living at? 17 mpg seems wild for this gasser!

Hi, We live around 4500 feet and the truck sees from 2000 to 9000 feet quite a bit. Towing it’s not as rosy.. We just got back from a 3000 mile trip to Minneapolis and we averaged 8.5 mpg with a low of 8.1 and high of 9.3 over the trip. All were towing miles. Yeah I miss the 22 mpg I was getting with my 2015 Silverado 5.3l double cab 4x4 but wanted something that could go the distance with little concerns (other than the gas stations 😬) Stay safe! Bill

Im also looking at getting this truck from a dealership- to carry a over the cab camper like 1800lbs… Compared to the diesel version… or the ford f250 2022 diesel… any comments?
@BillUtah
@BillUtah 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, with a 1800 pound camper you’d have a little over 1100 pounds left over for everything else. Diesel would have more power and complexity but definitely a lower payload in a three-quarter ton rig. But she’d have to deal with all the omissions that diesel brings on. As they say everything is a trade off.
@jessaiahzure
@jessaiahzure 2 жыл бұрын
@@BillUtah thank you. I never heard diesels have smaller payloads than regular 3/4 tons. And yes there is always a trade off- its been hard for me to figure out what is the best choice
@BillUtah
@BillUtah 2 жыл бұрын
@@jessaiahzure absolutely. I’ve seen most diesel 3/4 tons trucks have a payload in the low 2000 to high 1000 pound range. That is with a 10k GVW truck. Now some new trucks 2020 and up (Ford and Chevrolet only) have bumped up their GVW to almost 11,000 to get the payload up. My truck has a GVW of 9500 and weighs a little over 6500.

Hi, with the winter gas I’m down to about high 15s to maybe 16.5 if I’m lucky. I also drive with a lite foot for mpg (well not when towing) so the mpg is a little higher than normal driving. I’m still pretty happy with the truck. Next year once I retire it will be getting used a lot more. Stay tuned! Happy 2022

How has it held up?

Hi, doing well. I’ve had thoughts of selling it and getting something else since I’ve had some serious offers for the truck but keep coming back to how much I’d have to spend. How much more would I get and how much more complicated a new truck would be. For our use, it’s doing great. Thanks for the question

@@BillUtah Glad to hear! I’ve wondered if it’s worth paying up for the higher trim levels but honestly it seems like these newer WTs have all I’d really need
@BillUtah
@BillUtah Жыл бұрын
@@cmburns2606 Agreed. To be honest, the only thing I really would like is a better control (on the steering wheel) for the phone use. Everything works great but having to use the touch screen to hang up and the volume knob for volume (duh) would certainly be easier with steering wheel control. Of course, placing the phone on a holder you can use the phone’s screen to do the hanging up. And if you are using Android auto it’s all done with voice so that’s what we do. The rest of the truck works out fine for our use. It’s not the fastest, quickest or fanciest, gets a million miles per gallon but it is simple as far as 2019 trucks go. Some time all vehicles need to be worked on and as a retired guy I’d like to keep it as simple as possible. I know that the average certified mechanic can work on this truck without having to take the cab off the chassis to work on the motor. Take care, Bill

How many miles do they usually run for ?
@BillUtah
@BillUtah 7 ай бұрын
Of course it depends on how the truck is used and how it's maintained/driven. The engine is extremely well built as is the transmission. But they talk to many computers that dictate how the vehicle performs. We no longer own the truck and have updated to a RAM 3500 to tow a 5th wheel. Hopefully I'll be posting a video soon on it! Thanks for the question.

@@isachar2013 The other thing is that this engine doesn’t have direct injection which does cause some issues with getting deposits on the intake valves. Plus you can actually work on the engine when it comes time to do so. It’s not the most powerful or gets the best gas mileage. But it is pretty reliable and gets the job done well. It amazes me that some manufacturers require taking the cab off the chassis to work on the engine! Take care, Bill

What about fuel Mileage?
@BillUtah
@BillUtah 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, empty with the shell it’s a 15-18 mpg depending on how it’s driven and the road conditions. Towing I’ve seen 6-10 mpg. 6 while driving 55 mph into a 30-40 mph head winds and 10 when level and no winds doing 55-65 mph. It’s certainly not a fuel mileage champ but I can buy a lot of fuel for the lack of repairs or the cost of something more expensive. Thanks for the question
