Tip for all "USAers": Prepared food in Europe generally is MUCH lesse in sugar and salt compared to the USA. You taste the actual ingredients over the seasoning. In a positive manor, "get used to it". Another thing to realise is that the extreme seasoning in Indian and many other countries fonds comes from the fact that "back then" food could not be stored for long without going bad. The, what we now call "seasoning", herbs both lengthened the shelf life period AND camouflaged bad taste and smell from the pre-rotting fase without making us ill. P.s. Your Dutch is already fine, you seem to have a gift for pronouncing these topical Dutch sounds correctly. More practice will do the job.

For your daughter.. Eating bread is good for children. Your child gets good substances in this way. Think carbohydrates, proteins, fiber, iodine, B vitamins and iron. Whole wheat bread and brown bread are the healthiest choices. It contains a lot of fiber. Fiber is good for the intestines and digestion. Wholemeal bread contains the most fiber.Whole wheat bread (volkorenbrood) and brown bread (bruin brood)are the healthiest choices. You can alternate this with whole grain crispbread, oatmeal or muesli. Healthy toppings are, for example, 100% peanut butter, 30+ cheese, vegetables and fruit. Also think of semi-skimmed milk and fruit to go with it.Whole wheat bread (volkorenbrood)and brown bread (bruin brood)are the healthiest choices. Pindastukjes are smashed peanuts. Salad's you can eat it on bread, toast or crackers. On rosbeef you must spray a little salt and pepper.

I understand that you were a nurse in America, and want to practice this profession here as well. I saw another vlog "Expart Ellen". She was also a nurse in Califonia. Just in between. What she experienced there and the working hours. You will not encounter that here and in the rest of Europe. But applying for a job still presents some problems. In one of her videos she tells how she tried to take a course at university. But at first it was rejected because of not sufficient for schooling. But then did something a lot more people should do. Disagree with that and gave good motivation. Both in writing and with the invitation. As a result, the admissions committee was convinced to admit her to the university. Motivation helps more to succeed.

So I'm not a fan of seafood myself, but I do think at one point you should try Kibberling or Lekkerbekje, these are battered whitefish and don't taste that fishy. But you could start with Vissticks they can be bought in the supermarket in the frozen department. Those even your little one might like, or at least not hate I think. Also brown bread with the cheese mouses or just any young cheese should be fine for breakfast for her and you can always go for pindakaas on bread ofc, the one from Calvé is de lekkerste!

The typical Dutch staple is: boiled potatoes, boiled vegetables and a piece of meat. That should cover the bases when it comes to a somewhat balanced meal and it's not spicy. Which children often don't really like. For lunch, we usually eat slices of bread with butter and cheese or slices of meat. The roast beef on bread is usually seasoned with some salt and/or pepper to taste when you put it on your bread. Also: 'Verpleegkundige' is the official (gender neutral) term for 'nurse'. The traditional names for nurse are 'zuster' (sister) for females and 'broeder' (brother) for males.

There are lots of things you can do with Rosbief. You can put some black pepper on it, for example. Something to try: Get some wraps, some pindakaas (peanut butter), a bottle of sweet chili sauce and some lettuce. Slice the lettuce into strips. Warm up the wrap, put some peanut butter on it, then the rosbief, some lettuce and drizzle some sweet chili over that. Roll it up and enjoy. :)

I eat those salads on bread but they are served a lot on toast at parties. Roast beef is not spiced. You put what you like on it. Personally for me a little salt and a lot of black pepper. There's often the same meat you can buy plain or marinated but we are critical about additives in the EU. I almost always spice my food myself since I like spicy. For kids of course the chocolate sprinkles (hagelslag) and of course the desert called 'vla'. For your husband who likes seafood I suggest a 'lekkerbekje'. He can have that as a snack so you don't have to cook it. Have fun.

Easy: start with stroopwafels, then broodje haring, gerookte paling, kibbeling, zure haring, don't forget broodje hema worstje and that's basically it. Later you can try stamppot (zuurkool, hutspot or stamppot rauwe andijvie I like that with chorizo)and snert, brabants worstebroodje, bossche boll, werthers echte, haagse hopjes, autodrop, vla (chocolade, vanille, etc), frikandel speciaal met friet, tompoes, vlaai, hagelslag, bitterballen, later in the year oliebollen or appelbeignets, calve pindakaas, vietnamese loempia, kapsalon, start with this and you're good to go.

Your pronunciation is amazing actually. Even from your earliest videos you get the tone pretty accurate. With every bread that has "boeren" in front, is usually the nicest one. The salads from the Hema are a lot cheaper and better. When you put eggs in the fridge, you can add 2-3 weeks to the expiry date. Expiry dates are different in the Netherlands though as you must have found out by now. They are the last date the shop is allowed to sell it. The rest you have to figure out yourself.

Kip kerrie salade = chicken curry salad: The origin of this lie in the former Dutch East indies, but, as far as I know, it was the Surinam community that introduced it as a bread topping. All these salads are meant to be eaten on bread (Dutch bread is relatively neutral in taste compared to bread elsewhere on the continent. Hence, the wide array of sandwich toppings they have in the country). Tom kha gai is a Thai coconut chicken soup, so I do not know how that translated to a Dutch salad, but I am sure it is tasty. The cucumber salad speaks for itself. you can get a yoghurt-based one that is less fatty. As to something that the girl might like, considering she likes yoghurt, you could try Heinz sandwich spread, a tangy vegetable-based sandwich topping. Or if she is into sweet, try kokosbrood (a sweet coconut-based topping, with plenty of fibre, but do get the one without artificial colouring). Rosbief is normally enjoyed on buttered bread with (white) pepper (in other words, add your own seasoning to your taste). Do note that in the Netherlands, toppings that you cannot spread, are usually put on buttered sandwiches. As to the pronunciation of "nurse" in Dutch, provided you know the G-sound is like clearing your throat, or retching, it sounds like VER-PLAY-(G)-CUND-IG-EH (Don't dwell on the EH).

I usually use ryebread, toast or crackers for the spreads. White bread is pretty much flavorless and too soft. You can also try the "Wasa" brand crackers/knackebrod, these are great and higher in fiber.. the only reason for me to buy white bread would be to make grilled cheese sandwiches. Walk into a bakery and ask for some recommendations, you will taste the difference between most supermarket breads and the ones from the bakery. :) have fun exploring ! :)

all fine products. Decent nutritional value too. Seems like you had done some great food shopping. Bread here is amazing I agree too, thus I eat a loaf a day. Pick different meat, spreads, and repeat. you will never get bored. poffertjes/pannekoeken you can make yourself fresh better. Tastes ofcourse better always too when cooked home. Spreading spreads on bread is usually done with a butter knife. not a sharp knife. spread all around to your liking, fold it or whatever and enjoy Salads go any way you want them, toasts, bread, by itself, who cares its your enjoyment. usually its on bread or such tho. Crackers would go well with them too. We usually put eggs in the fridge, issue is once its cooled it can not be outside uncooled without consuming directly. Thats why they are sold outside of cooling, has to do with the eggs not being treated with chlorine here, america they do, destroying a layer of protection causing infection risk. here nothing is done to eggs. So you can cool them or not. but always keep them dark.

I would advice buying bread at the bakery. Supermarket bread is not great quality wise…bakery bread taste way better. And you can use those spreads on whatever bread you like…but probably taste best when you put it on a baguette…most supermarkets have small and big ones..those are generally speaking pretty ok, but offcourse bakery baguette will be much better. You also have toasts, which are small crackers. You have them in various sizes and brands, all for sale at the supermarket…those are great for spreads as well. Oh…and with the baguette…you can also ask in the supermarket if they want to cut it in little parts…ideally when you want to use it for those spreads..

You have bread, cheese and schouderham so you can make a tosti for Elyse. If she likes sausages maybe she'll eat bread with salami, boerenmetworst or sliced chicken filet. Once in a while bread with a sliced banana or a sliced boiled egg with cucumbersalad is also healthy. When I was young I had to eat my first slice of bread with something savoury like sausage, meat, vegetables or cheese. For the next ones I was free to choose sweet toppings.

You kind of have to flavour the rosbief yourself with salt and pepper. You csn add as much or as little as you like this way :) and it's fine to keep eggs in the fridge. It's not bad to do so, it's just not needed. If verpleegkundige is difficult you can shorten it to verpleger or verpleegster. Might be easier at first. Good luck finding your way in Rotterdam. And don't forget to enjoy yourself.

Hi! Another word for nurse is ' zuster' ( sister) much easier than verpleegster. The sliced roast beef is also available in a peppered version. It looks like you get your bread from Albert Heijn. They also have a slightly more expensive range, which are also very tasty ( under the name ' liefde en passie ') I got your channel through Tammy& Eric's and also enjoyed their food adventures, like I am with you now. A good breakdown of the word verpleegkundige... but it's all about the phonetics. The Dutch "ee" sounds very different from the American "ee". Our "ee" is more like the "a" in "ate" (English). The main problem with (Hollands) Dutch for most foreigners is the "g" sound, which is rather harsh and created in the throat. Pronounciation of "Scheveningen", where the "sch" sounds like "sg" is always a nice testcase... LOL

Tom kha khai is a famous Thai dish. Johma does a great job of catching the essence of this dish in a salade. Schouderham, is the ham of the shoulder. I personally like Beenham, ham from the leg. Nespresso is a good option also when you moved to your new home. The capsules can be bought in their stores or online. There are also alternatives you can buy at the supermarket, however they are in my view not as good. As others already commented, a bit of salt and pepper transforms the Rosbief. Back to the salads, i normally use them on small pieces of toast. Good for a party or an in between snack. Although tasty, don’t overdo it, it is containing mayonnaise or something similar which is to be consumed in small quantities. Although you’re not a big fan of fish, be brave and give it a try. Kibbeling and paling are nice and especially kibbeling is liked by people who normally do not like fish. Zalm (Salmon) is more fishy, so that I would not start with. Try the different sorts of bread, the darker the more taste the bread has and then we have spelt bread, zuurdesem bread and all other kinds of 🥖

You can also get it cut in pieces and choose to eat it with or without raw union and pickles, your choice. It can also be eaten on a bun. My personal favorite is smoked eel on a bun, broodje paling. All of these salades are made to put on bread basically, or Melba toast crackers. Not exactpy health food though but for the ocassional bite will be ok. For a more healthy bread, I like "volkoren" bread, which stands for whole grain, and is a legally protected term. Our children love houmous on their bread as healthy option, or real pindakaas (not the Calvé crap that is laced with palm oil) We try to keep them from eating the very processed "vleeswaren" because there is a lot of dextrose in them and tons of preservatives, tons of salt and saturated fats etc. They obviously will like these as much as anybody, especially when you let them get used to that "taste"...

Hey Diana, nice video ! Few things here: If you record a video, make sure you use the large lenses on the rear of your phone, because the little one on the front of you phone makes look everything in mirror image.... and so you are in mirror image but also everything you're showing us (Like the salads) were in mirror image.... It is such a nice video but entirely in mirror image, which can be avoided, again, by using the right camera's ! Food, well you should talk to Eric and Tammy about this, since they've gone through several world dishes, available here in The Netherlands. I'd say start with nice and tame Indonesian food, a simple Gado Gado-dish may do the trick to get used to the Indonesian flavor I'd say. Or you could start with a mild Surinam Roti-dish... Or of course the total extra ordinair Dutch quisine ...-> so lightly salted cooked potato's, lightly salted cooked fresh crops and a piece of meat with tasteful gravy, or seafood, or a piece of vegetarian/vegan meat replacement of course. It really is not the season, but meshing the crops and potato's together and the winterfood of STAMPOT is there, yumyum. Go look it up at the internet how to make Stampot in al of its variations ! Write in Dutch, that's important when you use google ;-) In fact all recopies of all yum yum food are available on internet, but you've got to write what you are looking to cook in Dutch ;-) step by step Diana, just take it step by step and you'll get there !

For the “rostbief” you need to add pepper and salt to make it taste better…mustard also is nice but you have to like it..

Tips if you guys want to try Dutch snacks at the market: fresh poffertjes, stroopwafels or kibbeling. At a snackbar: kroket, frikadel, Fries with mayonnaise-satey sauce and onions DONT TRY DROP / LICORICE Never met a forener who truely likes this😄

Kipkerrie is my favourite. So good on crackers. Could also eat it on some bread. I think most kids for breakfast have bread with something savoury and then something sweet. I would take her through the grocery store and let het pick some stuff to try.

Watch Eric and Tammy before you start experimenting. They did most of the work for you and published on their Soul to Soul Travels channel. Otherwise you might end up with some amazingly strange concoctions. On the other had: could be delicious, but never tried it. All these salads: put them on toast to try first. As far as seafood is concerned:give it a try. It differs from the stuff you get in the US. Have fun exploring.😃😆😎

Hi Dianna. Take your time to learn the language. Dutch isn't easy to learn for foreigners. My mother was English, she came over to the Netherlands in 1957 and married my dad. She learned Dutch by translation books and just trying. Just try, don't worry about pronunciation, listen to Dutch news on television. Just ask anything from anyone, neighbours, colleagues. Don't hesitate, don't hold back. The majority of the Dutcheese 😅 will help and understand 👍 Go for it.

As for the fish thing..... most kids like "kibbeling" which is made of typical white fish, dipped in a dough and then (deep)fried. You can ask yourself how healthy THAT is but anywayzzz....it might be worthwhile trying ? Get it from a good fish store and not from the supermarket ! Ask Tammy and Eric....they have some experience with "Kibbeling" and "Lekkerbekjes" already (and liked it !!)

Salades on melba toast :-) Some you can put on bread. wouldnt do tuc. Too salty... Poffertjes should be warm with butter and powdered sugar. Roastbeef: its lovely and plain. You need to put some pepper and salt on it. Its verpleegkundige :-)

You can pimp your ham, cheese and so on with cress, bean sprouts and other fresh stuff. Or mayo.... but that's less healthy :D

The rosbief isn't supposed to be seasoned. You can add it yourself if you like. I like it to be just as it is. You will manage the word verpleegkundige just fine, in time! Dark bread is much healthier than white bread. I don't have any food suggestions, I would advise you to go shopping with Eric and Tammy as they're in the Netherlands for some time already.

We put salt and pepper on our Rosbief, to get more flavour, you should try the York ham is very good. Zuster is another word for nurse, a patiënt use only the word zuster, and a male nurse is a broeder

The poffertjes out of a bag are not so tasty as the fress ones. Buy them on a market, on every big market there will be a poffertjes stand. Try them. And the stroopwafel you have to try on the market, it's fress.

Schouderham is actually not ham but cooked shoulder, I find it a bit cheating, but it is cheaper than the real ham, which is denoted as achterham which is idiot because the hams of a pig is off course at the rear end or achtereind. But it is all about profit and money for the sales man. Rosbief or Roast Beef is salted at the outside and roasted as a big lump of meat until half cooked or medium rare (rosé). The real meat taste is what you taste in the middle and the seasoning from the outside, but because it is sliced very thin as a topping on a sandwich, or like carpaccio some extra seasoning is ok if you wish. Some pepper and salt mainly, but some special dressing can be very tasty. Maybe some cucumber salade as well?🙂

3:20 If I go to the grocery store tomorrow I am going to buy the Zalm-salade from the same brand. Zalm means salmon and is very good. 11:20 'Verpleegkundigen' used to be called 'verpleegster' or 'verpleger'. I don't see what was wrong with those words. Anyway.. There is an enormous shortage in nurses in all fields, so I guess if you want to be a nurse in the Netherlands, then that you will be. Once you've got your papers, of course. Bye.

Incorrect, but often used: verpleger/verpleegkunde (m)=broeder/brother and verpleegster/verpleegkundige (f)=zuster/sister. A mnemonic: verpleegkundige consists of kundige, which is related to the English cunning (showing skill) and (ver)plegen with pledge (promise or care for)

You're doing great, Diane! Most Dutchies eat the Johma salads on bread for breakfast or lunch. Your daughter might like Speculoos (Biscoff) spread, vlokken (a variation on hagelslag) vruchtenhagel (like hagelslag but the sugared version) or if you want to give her savoury on her bread, try boterhamworst (a sausage type but quite neutral in taste) , smeerleverworst (we use this to get our young children used to savoury tastes on bread ,or cervelaat. Good luck!
