I remember getting to the end of Warhammer 40k Space Marine and thinking - "Oh fuck yes. I'm going to be duking it out with a mother fucking demon prince. This is going to be awesome." Then he tackles the guy off the tower and we're just punching him. QTE punching. All the way down the tower. That's literally two miles tall. And the final kick to the balls was the shit ending where he gets taken away in chains on suspicion of being tainted by chaos. So I go through all that, kill literally thousands of orks (I do mean thousands) beat their warboss (a real boss fight, and a fun one) and at the end of the game I don't even get to fight this chaos lord. I just get to wail on him by pressing button prompts. I think that was the first time I ever threw a controller across the room.

Fortunately, QTEs have been toned down significantly over the years (I'm looking at you RE6..) and have been adding or modifying them to have a hold option instead of a rapid press option. That way our hands don't get so tired or our controllers get worn out faster.

I agree with this statement. However... this is the ONLY game that I'm going to allow, carry on with this insulting antic. I might even go as far to allow this in a racing game, for a wreck type sequence or something, due to the horrid play control of some of the better racing games, when you start to slide, and are COMPLETELY out of control. The problem is, is that God of War did so well **financially**, that other game dev companies decided to make this the current standard model for the way games should be constructed now. RPG's are the worst. When I get to a boss fight, that is a clear ripoff of an appropriately designed God of War boss fight, I instantly roll my eyes and go trade in the game, for something else. I refuse to contribute to people having no option to pay full price for such, ( as AOS stated in his video), a fucking lazy ass game experience, with no originality or fun involved what-so-ever. Shame on ALL of you that keep spending $60-$120!!!!!, for games that are ok with selling a 4 hour long campaign mode with no actual boss "fights", just so people will have something to do, if their internet happens to be out that day. Its just awful. I'm going back to Nintendo and PC. I've never seen such bullshit come out of a game, (minus baaaad pc ports, of course), from any NES system, or PC game that was meant for PC in the first place.

I like how QTE was employed in heavy rain. Where failing doesn't necessarily restart from checkpoint but can alter the story altogether. Hell, even Turok had a cool idea with it at the end; where missing the button didn't necessarily mean death and hitting the button didn't necessarily mean victory.

The worst QTEs are the ones that are super fast DURING a cutscene that if you miss, you'll die instantly. Resident Evil 4 was guilty of this. One of my favorite games of all time too. But QTEs in that game weren't good. the buttons would change every time you attempt, like running from the giant boulder, AND it doesn't give you enough time to react to the change of buttons. AND THEN there's the fucking Krauser cutscene where you first meet him. I had many occasions where i put my controller down to watch the cutscene, or take a drink from my beverage and then they flash fucking buttons to press in less than half a second. And i missed them, you gotta watch the ENTIRE FUCKING CUTSCENE *AGAIN!!!!!*

I just quit playing the game after a couple of QTE's and never touched it again, it was just awful. It's time to go back to the classics. Thank god, most of the games i play don't have this QTE nonsense in them.

Sometimes, Omega, you really should try to widen your opinions. Yes Quick Time Events can be too much, but to say that they suck in every game they are in, that's just.. no.. I can't take an opinion like that seriously^_^ Quick Time Event, too me, makes the boss fight all the more stylish and cinematic, like how you finish off every boss in Darksiders, that sh*t was great to watch and felt f**king satisfying! Btw... who the hell puts down their controller during a cutscene? The game is still playing right? Granted you are not in controll at the moment, but the game is still playing, so don't go and blame the game for your stupidity. If you want a break during a game, guess what the PAUSE button is there for?? :3

I think Shenmue was the first game to make QTEs a "thing" (pushing buttons on command during a game certainly existed before, especially in arcades and the Sega CD days, but this was the first incarnation of "modern gaming" where it was used). If used occasionally (similar to Resident Evil 4), they are not a big deal for me...unless they come out of nowhere with absolutely no time to respond. Sometimes, I would watch a cutscene in a game while eating a sandwich or whatever, then a QTE comes out of nowhere requiring me to respond immediately. After throwing my sandwich across the room to grab my controller, I'm dead before I can even blink.....and I have to reload the game to a previous save point which may result in over an hour of lost time. That is the only time QTEs really tick me off.

In Shenmue the QTE's are a tiny part of the game, and occur during cut-scenes (the whole point of QTE's is to give cut-scenes some interactivity), same with RE4, they are sporadic and make sense (in the first Krauser fight its brilliantly used, in the second fight with Krauser they feel a bit cheap).. Where QTE's are offensive is when they take place during actual gameplay, such as "press button to defeat the Ur Didact"), and they are often used by devs to lazy to design proper boss fights.
@death-king18348 жыл бұрын
That last boss battle on Shadow of Mordor, was literally just a quick time event and I was like: ''Are you fucking shitting me?!'' I've personally found that the actual button press QTEs work better in short unpredictable bursts. RE4 has some great QTEs that randomize the button presses, and they are never long enough to break the pacing of the game. Most are like 5- 10 seconds, with the longest being the knife fight. Even that made sense, though, because they were doing things in scene that were just not possible with the game's mechanics.

The quick time event at the end of Metal Gear Solid 4 was actually done correctly. Although you only push the same button repeatedly, you feel connected to the character as you are struggling to get move forward. It was much better then simply watching your character crawl or holding the analog stick forward. It was intense. If it happened more then once, it could have been annoying, but for the one time it happened, it was great.

I think QTEs can be done very well and have been in the past, it just really depends on how they're implemented. I feel like for a QTE to be successful the developer should go at it from angle of trying to make it as intuitive as possible, and also leaving a bit of room for trial and error without it resulting in a straight up game over should you fail. In regards to games like Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls, I feel like that's really just more having to do with creating its own gameplay style, like shooters and turn-based rpgs. Really it should come down to if you don't like that play style then just don't play it. Although I have noticed it's becoming more and more prevalent with new games being released across the board so I can understand the frustration, but I believe if that play style can find its own place to coexist and be implemented well when crossing over, then it's not a big deal really.

I believe that hell will be random combinations of lag spikes during quick time events.

It would be nice if they put "This Cut-Scene has a quick-time event" on the top of the screen during a cut-scene if it had a quick-time event.

There have been times when I went a really long time without saving and just before I get to the next save point there's a quick time event and I end up dead. All of my work up that point just dissapeared. What makes it worse is that the button combinations are always different. (Depending on what game you play.) I hate quick time events!
