Was turning in for the night when I heard the alert that a new video was available so I just watched it and as usual I learned a lot. We have done Formica before but a long time ago. I have already bought my plywood and Formica for the new table and counter and can't wait to get started. BTW, it's a boomerang pattern. Love it! Due to rain and illness, we haven't done anything on the camper in over a week but I'm feeling a bit better so tomorrow we hope to get back to work. Enjoyed the tutorial. Thanks, Larry!

You're welcome Linda. You know, something I should have put in that video was a close up of the counter top on one of my work benches. It's very old boomerang formica and it's not retro. It's REAL!

Good tip about taking the glue to the paint dept and getting them to run it on the shaker table! This is a great tutorial, Larry! When I did my kitchen, I couldn't count the number of videos and tutorials I watched, assimilating every shred of help I could get. I'd never done such a thing before and had no clue as to how to do it.I was working with well over $200 worth of Wilsonart laminate, and the fact that you have one chance and only one to get it right was pretty intimidating. The biggest section took a whole 4x8 sheet of laminate, and a 4x8 sheet of plywood. It's an 8 foot wide counter, 2 feet deep, extending out 4 feet by 2 feet deep on either side. It was one piece, one shot, and I pulled it off. The dowels are the magic that makes it work. You lay it out, get it right, and start in the middle, pulling them out one at a time as you roll it outward, so you don't get any bubbles. And it works. That counter has now been heavily used for 5 years, and I'm still loving it. Had I seen this video back then, I think it would've eliminated the need for watching the eleventy gazillion others I watched then. You nailed it, sir.

I remember when you remodeled your kitchen John. And you did such a nice job too. That and your guitar rebuild were two of the most interesting project videos on You Tube...

Spot on man, I built counter tops for a few years and this is pretty much our process. The only tip I could give is to cut the sink hole after to minimize the chance of breakage and make a slick matching cutting board. I'll be driving out from Denver to squaw valley to pick up a 1975 field and stream 13' in a couple of days and I'll know exactly what to look for thanks to your videos. Thank you!

Great video. I have used dowels to set the Formica on also but learned an old trick from a laminate guy about 30 years ago. He used old Venetian blinds. I have been using them ever since. They are curved, set on two edges and don't roll on you. The aluminium ones work the best. 64MobileScout

Yeah Baby, The TUNE is back. When we ever meet, I'll have that guitar lick down to make your head snap as you toddle by, Mr. M-Tec. HA BTW, your shop is starting to show some dust; so, I know you are working a little bit. Ladies and Gents, Boys and Girls, Larry left a small tip out though probably covered in another earlier segment as mentioned in the audio of this show. These formica brand counters come in quite large sheets needing to be sized down to the smaller surface counter to be managable. The formica is difficult to cut without shattering and splitting. A method we use around here is a multi-toothed 'panel blade' on a circular saw - BUT, installed backwards in the reverse direction. The teeth then tend to melt their way through rather than chop or chisel the formica (trust me or do a test piece.) Look at the teeth, compare it to a hand saw, then figure out the natural wood cutting direction. Reverse the blade so the teeth are 'backwards.' ..... Take the class, Larry will show you.

LOL I've made tons of dust in there. I just like to clean it up at the end of each day is all. I still like that tune too.

He stayed down there where he has lived for the last 30 years. I moved 450 miles north and he didn't want to come with me.
