Good video. I usually stick out my left hand as a thank-you when pulling into a gap in the traffic to the car that I have overtaken and that they have left space enough.

I was advised to do this by my RoSPA tutor. It’s great for minimising the possibility of the driver behind being upset.

Unfortunately mane drivers no longer stop, giving a gap or safe space between vehicles as they should so its less likely that a motorcyclist can find such a safe gap to ride into and he could be left out in the cold on the wrong side of the road to face oncoming traffic which is a very dangerous situation to place themselves in. Whilst we could see a few landing spaces as they were called at any time other drivers could and no doubt would fill those space before we got to them and then where are we. Up the creek and without a paddle. We can all presume to always have a safe space but unfortunately things do not always turn out as we presumes and so we must presume the worst case scenario. No available space means do not overtake.

As he stops behind the van he pulls into the safe space afforded him by the car behind the van. I saw no appreciation for the giving of that space at all. I would have raised my hand in thanks and acknowledgement of his safe driving.

The chief instructor of the IAM recently said that he considers a filter to be done in between lines of traffic all going in the same direction and not as some would have it on the offside of all traffic lanes and sometimes done in the face of oncoming vehicles. As such then the initial passing of vehicles in the video was an overtake and all of the rules and recommendations apply. As filtering is a sub set of overtaking it has to adhere to the advice given in all road safety manuals where all the dangers of overtaking will all apply to filtering as well.

Great, clear info. When there's longer queues, there's a very real danger of some impatient driver throwing a U-turn right across you whilst filtering.....or "overtaking" in this case, as one of your potentially blocked subscribers may say 😉 😜

Thanks. Yes, you need to watch for the slightest 'body language' of a move.

A very informative post Mike, as always food for thought, filtering plans will often change as you move past the line of slow moving or stationary traffic, thanks for posting , wishing you Happy and safe riding New Year 👍😊

Lucky the white car didn’t pull forward just as you were moving in . But then I’m only a Silver 😉😊 great video . Subscribed 👍🏻

Thanks for the sub! The car had been sat still for quite some time. Any way I wasn't between it and the silver van, but just to the right of that gap.

Thanks Mike. Can I just ask you what is the minimum temperature you would be happy for an associate to cancel an observed ride. The observer is unknown, as is their possible love of goat tracks in freezing conditions. I cancelled one such ride when the temp was 0.4c. It had been minus overnight. I'm a little torn whether I called this right. Thank you.
@mikeroberts Жыл бұрын
Ray this came up elsewhere recently. I don't normally take out Associates at 4 degrees and below. Guidelines for tests suggest the temp be 5 degrees and upwards. Personally, I do ride (non-observing) below 4 degrees but only if the roads are generally dry. Today I was out on a 60 miler with the temp stuck a 3 degrees. You have to be careful in the damp shadows. Thank goodness for Keis heated kit!

Some Blood Bike groups generally take the bikes off the road at +3C or below, but with rider discretion if the roads are dry.

@@richardb7220 I think if you have to ride your motorcycle for work or other essential use. you take it very steady and get on with it. I think it's different for an associate to have their first observed ride in low temperatures. The is enough to focus on without worrying about ice. Thank you for your help.

Yep once more a definite overtake and therefore all the dangers of any overtake to be looked for and to possibly negate the overtake. As said one could use the whole of the road and not just ride over the hash lines. One was very lucky to find a gap ahead to pull into. I have known riders come to grief as in general other road users have failed to give a sufficient gap for us to ride back into. So one must be careful all the time and not just presume that one can get back into our own lane. You were lucky some riders aren't.
@mikeroberts Жыл бұрын
Lucky? No luck involved, just planning. I only moved out and proceeded to filter as there were several available gaps to land. Also, I wasn't riding on the hatchings but the other side of them, hence me saying to use more of the road (if safe) and not hug the vehicles you are passing.
@rcraven1013 Жыл бұрын
@@mikeroberts I did agree with you with regards to the use of more of the road space and for the benefit of others warned of the dangers of committing without a safe landing space. Nowadays most drivers are nose to tail with no space, ie. tyres and tarmac being seen between them. So little to no chance of a return. At the time you initially committed to the overtakes whilst you could see and mentioned some spaces were available and closer to you along that road there was no way that you could have seen that space that you eventually were able to return to.
