I enjoy all the quick tips. You have so much knowledge and I appreciate you taking the time to share with us. I found a tip that you might like. I watched a video on how to clean a brush that the paint had dried and the brush was hard. It was amazing. You may want to share it with all your students. . The person sprayed some easy off oven cleaner into a jar lid and pressed the brush into the cleaner back and forth until it became soft and you could see the paint change the cleaner color to the old paint color. You take a paper towel and squeeze the old dirty paint and cleaner out of the brush. It only takes a few minutes and the brush returned to new condition. I tried it on some old brushes that I had for 30 years. I can not tell you how happy I was to have my old brushes back to new condition. I had one brush that did not like the process. But the hog hair, synthetic and other natural brushes came out beautifully. I ended up cleaning most of my brushes and I couldn't be happier. They look beautiful. Even the old dry paint on the handles came off beautifully. Of course you do this outside, wear gloves and wash your brush with dish soap and water after you have removed all the old paint and cleaner with a paper towel. You will be amazed at what happens. You might be concerned about trying it but if you have some old brushes you were going to toss you will not regret trying. You may already know about this process but if not then this could be my quick tip for you. Thank you again for sharing all your knowledge. You are fantastic.

Thanks for sharing this, Barbara. As a follow up, I'll be interested to know how the brushes hold up following this cleaning method. I've long relied on Murphy's Oil Soap for retrieving brushes, but it does require soaking overnight. A quicker method such as this one adds another option. Do give us a follow-up report on how the brushes work and how well they hold up after being used for a while.
@barbarataylor68086 жыл бұрын
Just a small follow up. Once you clean the brush with oven cleaner you need to wash the brush with dish soap and water. It removes all the old oven cleaner. The best part is the brush would have been trashed because it was beyond saving. But this process was amazing. The best test is take a brush you believe is beyond saving and try the oven cleaner process and see how wonderful it works. @@IntheStudioArtInstruction

Dear Dianne, I have two paintings here, I’m fond of, both the motives and the colours - BUT - there is not enough With colours in the brush-strokes ....they are colourful but in some areas you can see the structure of the board/panneau, under the paint. - Thanks to your lesson here, I think you just gave an illustration of whats wrong With my paintings. Is there anything I can do/ dare to do, now when they are dry since 1-2 years back? Maybe a stupid question...? Thanks a lot for sharing all your fantastic knowledge with us.🌹

Marie, I always advise folks to keep moving forward and just hang on to the paintings that didn't quite work as an reminder. It IS possible to clean the surface thoroughly with rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth, let it dry, oil it out ( see this short video by Gamblin: vimeo.com/377376469 --use linseed oil rather than galkyd), than paint.

Years and years ago, I had an instructor insist that I lay down a thin layer of linseed oil before painting! I never thought of using poppyseed oil. Good tip!
@IntheStudioArtInstruction5 жыл бұрын
Be careful with poppyseed - it's very slow drying. Just a tiny bit is enough to take away the natural resistance of a dry canvas.

Yes. Quick Tip number 7 is about Caring for Your Brushes and Quick Tip 341 is about reshaping them. You might also benefit from watching Quick Tips 193, 338, 391 and 110. About mediums, I don't advise mixing mediums with your paint unless you need it to dry quickly. In that case, watch 249.

Great tips. I've been experiencing the dry surface issue lately. I use water mixable oils and wonder if I could use a little water on the surface... or maybe brush on a mix of Gamsol and Neo Megilp? Something to try with the next piece!
@IntheStudioArtInstruction7 жыл бұрын
With water mixable oils, Gamsol or Neo Meilp are not a good idea. Better to spritz a bit of water on the surface.

dannie i just wanted to know can we paint over a dried layer of oil paint,?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction6 жыл бұрын
Thiloka, if the paint has been dry for only a few days, a light spritz of either Gamsol or a 50/50 mixture of Gamsol + either linseed or poppy oil. Wipe the surface down so that it is not TOO wet. Then, you should be able to paint over it with no problem. If the paint has been dry for a long, long time, you would want to first clean it with Gamsol and a soft cloth.

is gamsol something same as turpentine ? because gamsol is not available in our country
@IntheStudioArtInstruction6 жыл бұрын
It works the same as turpentine. It, like Turpenoid, is a refined mineral spirits created to be a substitute for turpentine because of turpentine's fumes.

What about acrylics? While the last 3 tips can certainly also be used with the acrylic medium, does the differing chemistry make necessary a different approach to how to implement the first tip? Curious to see what else would you recommend in this regard. As always, thank you for the great and very timely advice!
@IntheStudioArtInstruction6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for bring this up, Ryan. Yes, I neglected to mention that the poppy oil/gamsol mixture is for oil paints. For acrylics, just plain water will do the job. Of course, watercolor painters have the wetness factor build into their techniques (wet on wet, wet on damp, wet on dry).

I just started oil painting. My teacher has us using turpenoid and sand oil. Thoughts? So many different oils and solvents. How does one choose?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction5 ай бұрын
We have a Quick Tip coming out on that in early September. There are several oils, and each has a different purpose. It your tube paint is creamy enough, there is no reason to use oils in your painting process. The solvent is used to keep your brushes rinsed. The one I've used for years is Turpenoid which is a refined mineral spirits. I believe you might mean stand oil rather than sand oil. Stand oil slows down the drying of paint and gives it a gloss. Honestly, I would not use stand oil for beginning courses.

How exactly do you paint from dark to light? Won’t the lighter colors get muddy when they are applied on the darker areas?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction7 жыл бұрын
You begin with the shadow areas, build in their value variations, then move to the not-in-shadow areas. You will not get mud if you don't overstroke. If you watch one of my lessons, you'll see how I do that.

In India we have an abundance of coconut oil will it work the same as linseed oil?
@IntheStudioArtInstruction6 жыл бұрын
Sivakarmi, coconut oil (as far as I know) would not be a good choice. Linseed oil works because it chemically changes to a solid when exposed to oxygen. I'm not sure coconut oil will do that.

Very helpful, once again!I recently retired and want to get back into painting; oils and acrylics. However, I haven’t painted in a few years and I feel overwhelmed about beginning again. I was a reasonably talented painter but relied on painting from photos, other paintings and live models in classes. I was a reading teacher, not a trained artist. I have recently read so many technical art books that I am immobilized each time I begin to paint? Any suggestions?

Yes: stop reading and start painting. Begin with anything that gets your attention and just start playing, with no intention of making a painting.
