I have been working on a landscape of a distant mountain and a desert in the foreground. I have felt that it looked "cartoonish" but couldn't put my finger on why. I realize that it is now the edge of the mountain is too sharp and the color of the sky is a darker value so it makes it even more pronounced. Dianne, THANK YOU so much. This was a tremendous help for me!

What really stands out to me here is the fact that through the edges alone, the vague example lines come together and look kind of a line an object in of itself. It really drives home their importance

Just great to have this reinforced and be re-educated. Thank you . I tend to forget the importance of edges and wonder why a painting doesn’t look right.

This was sooooooo informative. I have not heard this deep discussion on edges and turns out this has been one of my problems while learning to paint. I have watched at the least hundreds of artists videos but so little on this critical piece of knowledge

Love your videos! You always share great tips in easy to understand ways. If possible, can you please do a video on high key paintings. I really love high key paintings, and I would love any tips on what percentage of the paintings should be in darker values.

Hard edges CAN be fun. Sometimes, I get so fatigued with realism (both aiming for it and seeing it from other artists) that I'll intentionally shoot for comic-book, cartoonist-like work to rebel against "the right way". Not to be serious, but to just cut loose and jam a "bootleg" session, so to speak. I wouldn't want to do it all the time - usually when I do, it's after spending a lot of time in the company of serious artists that I'll go home and throw all of my technical skills out of the window. It's to save my own sanity more than anything, especially when the conversation of soft edges went into overtime . Can anybody relate? Or is it just me?

Mr Snrub, successful painting is not a matter of "the right way." It's a matter of knowing how to make your painting do what you want it to do.
