There's a channel called 'color nerd' that goes into way too much detail for anyone interested in that sort of thing.

I am so happy to see this video, I was just looking at this in Richard’s book and wanting to do the charts also. I didn’t know that you only add enough of the other color to still keep the original hue. Also, I was not looking forward to taping off squares….I like the way your example looks just with the brush and much easier! In the book, Richard mentions spraying with varnish after they dry, I guess they could fade over time? Thank you for this awesome video!

Thank you. Very helpful. I seem to never mix enough paint. I finally get the color I need and realize I need more. Sometimes I can’t get the exact color again. Any tips?

I used a limited palette for the first time last night on 2 paintings and I think they’re my 2 best paintings so far!

This was a great demonstration. I’ve been playing around with creating a mother color when I’m using a limited palette, and it made me question when do you decide to use a mother color vs when do you use the pure pigments and pure pigment mixes? Or would you consider the base pigments in the limited palette as a part of the range along with the colors adjusted with the mother mix.

I think this was very informative. I wonder if Bob Ross uses this color palette.

Although I primarily do watercolor (and traditional Chinese painting); I learn so much from these. I’ve been painting with a very limited palette of traditional, natural pigment chips for over 12yrs. I started venturing into western WC a few years ago after my Son passed. My daughter, best friend and I wanted to honor his legacy by bringing cultural arts together. My dear first Chinese tutor, who was 85-86 when my Son introduced us; thought it was a great idea-especially if we could find ways to adapt western paints to use on very thin, delicate xuan paper. (The quality of traditional pigments has been decimated, just in the past 5-6years..long story). That is..UNTIL this past Spring Festival when I excitedly showed Lili over WeChat my huge Western palette of about 48 professional colors. Now in her late 90’s, Lili and her granddaughter taught me a few Chinese expletives that day! 😂. I have been CORRUPTED she yelled! (Note: NEVER tick off a Chinese great-grandmother 🤷🏼‍♀️😂). Her daughter was afraid she’d have a stroke she was so mad “you’ve forgotten EVERYTHING I taught you and bought into those western (expletives) selling you 30 blues, 50 reds and 60 yellows! (Expletive again) 😂. Lili was NOT happy and made me clear off my pallet of all but about 7 colors…AND my fancy Chinese ink (that I spent 2 years, using ONLY ink, learning strokes and values..and that my crazy cat thinks is catnip..dried. She doesn’t eat it, she just rolls around on it and carried my paintings or practice sheets around the house so she can lay on them 🤷🏼‍♀️😹. For anyone who doesn’t know, high quality traditional ink, even the ink sticks, contain traditional medical herbs and flower essences. Kitty Leela also snitched on me one day, long before I was supposed to be using paint, she carried a practice sheet I had done of bamboo..using some green chips, in front of the camera as Lili was instructing me on strokes…I think that was the last time she yelled at me before she saw my palette. ). Lili loves my cat and swears she’s a reincarnated Chinese master. She talks to her in Chinese, and Leela responds..of course, she responds to almost anyone saying her name, but 🤷🏼‍♀️😸. She DOES seem to prefer I speak Chinese..Lili says I wouldn’t have learned as much of the language if not for my feline Chinese master.
