Rebatment of a rectangle is a new word I didn’t hear in college art classes. But did learn about the golden mean in a rectangle. Appreciate the square advice. I do love squares especially when I’m painting with wax - encaustic designs seems to fit nicely for me in squares - ❤

Oh, wow; I was about to paint on a square canvas, since the image I took with my camera almost called out for it. Now, after listening to this, I am challenged to make sure it is an interesting piece! I took a close-up of two puffed-out mourning doves perched on an old birdhouse covered with snow, and I want to do it almost monochromatic. Here goes. Square format have a type of "fat monumentality", I remember Albert Handell in an interview talking about this. He use mostly square format and close to square formats.

I think the question was asking what type of layout to use regarding the elements of design I believe are there 7 or 8 of them?

Actually, Jan, the viewer was asking specifically about using the square format. I rarely limit the number of possibilities because the imagination can always discover something other than traditional methods. As far as the elements of design, typically, we list value, color, direction, size, shape, texture and line .
