We used to use bake bean tins in exactly the same way. One can use big jubilee clips (hose clamps to Americans), plastic cable ties, string etc, to compress the outer sleeve & then get the pistons rings into the bore if working alone, but best not to have a swear box nearby! Much easier with two pairs of hands. . I have had more problems with bigger engines. I once did a 2.4 litre VW diesel in a Volvo & the rings were anything but cooperative & in that case I did buy the proper tool & have been thankful for it. Sometimes these jobs go well without a re-bore, but I did a Briggs & Stratton on a Merry Tiller & it is a nuisance for fouling plugs & I always wished I had had enough money at the time to re-bore it. I have a Stihl chain saw that needs the same treatment as yours. The seller who we bought it off new, said It had been run on too low an oil content, but its no where near as bad as yours, but the compression makes it very difficult to start & then it drinks fuel. Think I will rebore it sometime. But finding the time is hard & it's one job among so very many. Good Luck with yours!
@WayOutWestx27 жыл бұрын
You make a good point about the plug - I guess that's a sign of oil leakage if it gets fouled up quickly? Thank you. I've never had to re-bore a cylinder - sounds interesting. But still I think I'll avoid it if I can..!

I like the piston ring compressor. Better than buying one which you will use high days and holidays. Good video. Good to see I'm not the only one that has to undo something because of something I've forgotten.

Do you have any tricks for those annoying ring shaped spring retaining clips that hold in bearings and all sorts of other stuff? Most of them are too big and way too strong for the common sizes of spring pliers that are supposed to take them on and off.

i'd like to know about this too, they're right little buggers. there must be something that makes them easier to work with.

Good tip for the interior ones. The rings that go on the outside of a shaft I've found to be the worst of them though. There's some that need to open a good inch to slip over the shaft, and standard ring pliers only open 3/4" at best. I've found real big spring pliers, but they're all poorly reviewed until you get to sets that are $80 or more. Worth making my own from regular pliers for that kind of cost.
@ellisonrepair7 жыл бұрын
$80. for a life time is not so bad. If a one time use, maybe your local rental yard

I’ve had my Jonseted for 18 years, a lot of firewood cut. Made the same mistake, all by myself🤬 I rebuilt it and run it for one season, but she’s on a shelf now. Had to upgrade as new anti vibration technology is kinder to my joints. Great video.

The mark on the piston , usually an arrow, is supposed to point towards the exaust. How do I know? I used to do stuff like this for a living. Never bothered with the ring compressor, just squeezed on the rings to get them past the cylinder opening, but that tube trick was nice. Also remember to measure the piston ring gap. Insert one ringe in the cyllinder bore, and measure the gap with a feeler gauge, and check it against manufacturers recomendations. If the gap is too narrow, then the ring wil lock in the boore when heat expands it. Usually you get the right rings from the store, but I have been sendt the wrong ones. Grind down exess until the gap is right.
@WayOutWestx27 жыл бұрын
That makes sense. Perhaps we were just lucky but it seems to be working fine. So far!

Way Out West Blow-in blog You would have noticed it the first time the engine reached opperating temperature. Nice job btw, always nice to see when people fix things instead of throwing it away. You could often buy a new saw just for the parts price, but those cheapos are not at all reliable. Btw, I saw your Cordelia thingy, really neat. I hope someone licences it, it deserves to get out to a wider audience.

Hey ! Very good tips ! :-). Thx for sharing ! I would sand grind the edges though...on the plastic made tube tool ! Just to make it operate moore smoothly and precise and...well with out anoying small quantom plastick bits flying arround eighter...they might end up in the cylinder grate or the sylinder itself....and would be anoying i bet...with small melted quantum plastic parrticles...where not should be. Just a suggestion and just saying. To get them correct and going...those old machines...is very satisfying...and you tips there was very good as i said. Also i think you remind everyone to be smart and creative...and than you make yourself more and more comfertable on issues that is anyoing and seems difficult. Perfect solution he he

Love that you did it without those fussy expensive precision measuring tools. I used to work on engines without gloves and clean my hands after with gasoline (it used to smell so much better and be orangey-coloured). I would not do it that way now. Gasoline also worked well to clean roofing tar off hands.

A bit off topic, but my condolences on the news of Dolores O'Riordan's passing. She was a fantastic and creative artist and one of Ireland's best musicians. I was a bit older when the Cranberries came out - but I 'forced' my young children to listen to them in the car on road trips. A sad day indeed.

She was another person who's internal anguish came out so clearly in her voice and song-writing. It's not easy being a sensitive human, is it?
@wmo12347 жыл бұрын
I think she is like so many wonderful people, that despite their inner demons they seem to produce such amazing art. Ireland is such a beautiful place with a difficult past that has 'forged' many amazing talents. Its as if the history acts as a crucible where diamonds are made. I think of our Jazz and Rock and Roll music that was "Born" from the African American story in this way. Sorry, I didn't mean to drift too much off topic, but I have a deep reference for that rocky, beautiful emerald green island that is your home. You represent it well Tim!

Curious how well your saw will hold up now with the touched-up jug, run-dry needle bearing(s), and basically just a new piston and rings. Common wisdom as I've known it is to pair new jug, rings, and piston, but I suppose it's worth a go as long as the cost is right in it.
