In this video we have a quick look at 'hot stamping' which is where we apply a maker's mark (or other stamp) to some leather by heating it up rather than applying it to cased leather.
This is a quick method using a heat gun, for industrial application you can get proper machines to do this. Please try not to burn yourselves :)

Ian, I just ordered some stamps from Le Provo and got a better deal from him shipped to the states than I could get from companies in the USA. Thanks so much for the recommendation! I'll tell him you sent me his way, maybe he'll give you a deal on your next order. Keep up the great videos. Cheers!

Thank you! I never would have thought of using my heat gun. When I learned leather bookbinding, we used the sizzle test--lick you finger and touch and the die should just hiss a bit. We just went down and up with the press, too, no more than a second.

an fyi for you... I have never heard of solid magnesium exploding! it is very dangerous in the powdered/shaved state. it was used many many years ago as flash powder in photographs. I owned a company that made magnesium plates. we subjected the plates to very high temps (300ºf)when mounting the dies and also when vulcanizing rubber plates. great video on the stamping process... came out very clean for those of you wanting to get dies like this, search photoengravers or magnesium die makers. copper may also be available in some areas. ask for deep etching with straight shoulders (some may charge extra) for the cleanest dies. there will always be a slope to the edges and very fine detail may be very shallow and not stamp at all.

You can also use an electric flat griddle to heat up your Kydex and it's not expensive. You can buy one from around $20 to $50 American. Not sure what they cost in the UK but shouldn't be much more. Just lay the Kydex on the griddle and let it heat up until it's flexible. You can also order presses from knife making suppliers where you can mold the Kydex around knives, etc.

Nice video. I need to do this on a couple of custom jobs and have found it very useful. Have you thought about applying a cross shape on the top of your stamp and carrying the lines down the sides to help with alignment? Never worry about using a heat gun on this type of alloy (Magnesium and Aluminium) as it won't get to a critical temperature. Flames and kilns are more of a problem.

When you are wet stamping, don't you have to worry about the impression...shallowing out, or lessening as it dries? Is that a problem that needs to be addressed with the hot stamping? I'm thinking about giving leather works a try and you're videos have been incredibly helpful and encouraging to anyone interested in getting started. Thanks for the vids.

If I didn't want to spend money on a purpose made stamp, would a one-off soapstone stamp that I make myself work with this method? Being such a soft material it wouldn't last long with any pressure but it holds heat extremely well. Great videos by the way!

Hi Ian any tips on applying a hot/warm stamp on something which will have a slight curve on it? I apply my stamp after cutting, case it, apply stamp, dye then make a razor cover. My logo stretches out a little, deforming. Would I be best to complete razor cover, stretch/ bend then apply my logo? Failing that I think I will have to simplify my makers mark into a horizontal one instead of round type Lessening the risk of distorting my logo. Thanks

Hi sorry if this is a silly question… I have been using this technique also do you think it would work with foil also I want to try the gold foil look on a project But don’t want a foil machine just thinking up a way to do it with a heat gun and arbor press if possible. Have you tried this at all Also is foil for leather a specific foil or can I just use a generic?
@Leodis.Leather
@Leodis.Leather 2 жыл бұрын
I have tried this yes with poor results, I think for foil stamping you need a more consistent and even heat which the machines provide or you’d need to work out the temperatures and quite carefully heat the stamp

Ian How do you have that Magnesium stamp adhered to that wood block? I have a stamp that I want to try this with, but it's just a Magnesium stamp NO handle or wooden block. I tried it awhile back, but it gets too hot to hold with my fingers and if I play around with the stamp it's very hard to position it accurately with pliers under the ram of my arbor press. quick question (which might be daft but I've never worked with leather before so bear with me) is it possible to do this with really old leather? I'm doing a photography project and ideally I'd want add some lettering to an old knackered leather briefcase (we're talking at least 40-50 years old I reckon) it's dried and cracked, which is part of what makes it look good, so I don't want to bother if trying to stamp it will just trash the thing. thanks.
