I love to see that you went the inexpensive route with your tooling surface. I got my "Mistake" Headstone back in the early '90s for $20.00 at the graveyard. Best tooling surface EVER!

Great video! How do you merge the basket stamp with the border? Do you just do the basket stamp first and then come back with the border and overlap the basket stamp? So some points end up having a basket stamp that you are directly stamping over? Thanks so much!
@AttackLineLeatherКүн бұрын
@@richardnathandaniels2534 yes thats exactly right. Lay down basket stamp first and try to feather off at the edges then come in with border stamps to merge the two

My personal preference when doing borders on square pieces is to angle the stamp in the corners and then fill in from there... I've found it gives a fuller and more uniform border but that just my opinion!

Hey mate, I noticed you had an issue where your tool kept slipping when you hit it. I had the same issue and I fixed it by using a hammer styled mallet, I use Barry Kings Hammer Mallet.

Herman oak really worth the squeeze over Tandy tanned veg?
@AttackLineLeather2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely!! Tandy's oak leaf is fine to start with. It's inexpensive and great to learn on. But once you start doing a lot more leather work, HO is so much nicer to work with.
@donpayne5622 жыл бұрын
Yes sir if you do a lot of tooling .i learned how to tool on Tandy’s veg and the first time I bought and tooled on h.o. It became much easier to bevel and especially shade.i think part of it is the hide seems a lot more dense but I made a boat load of things out of Tandy’s leather so I keep both and tool h.o.and use the other for back panels and gussets.

If you are just getting started, I'd recommend Tandy Leather. Their veg tan leather is reasonably priced. Once you have decided that this is definitely something you're into, I'd recommend trying Hermann Oak leather. I get mine from Springfield Leather co

@genecarden7802 жыл бұрын
You did a very admiral job of explaining how to space border stamps. But you committed the cardinal sin of KZbinrs, you used the word “perfect”. It is NOT perfect ( border stamps VERY RARELY are.) The trick is to deceive the eye to hide the flaws. You demonstrated this pretty well. Please keep making these videos, they are well done. Just NEVER use the word perfect. Leather craft is an imperfect craft. Just like most crafts perfection is something to strive for but not possible to achieve. There is always something that can be improved. Thanks for taking the time and considerable effort to make these videos.
